On the Relationship between MMA Levels in Blood Products and Donor Sex, Age, and Donation Frequency
J Nutr Sci Vitaminol (Tokyo). 2024;70(2):124-130. doi: 10.3177/jnsv.70.124.ABSTRACTAs the aging process accelerates, the age structure of blood donors turns to older and even aged groups. Methylmalonic acid (MMA), a byproduct of propionate metabolism, may be upregulated in the serum of older adults. As a mediator of chronic disease and tumor progression, the MMA content in blood products has become the focus of research. Absolute concentrations of MMA in blood products were determined based on the liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, so as to analyze how they were affected by donors' age, sex, and frequency of b...

Safety of tranexamic acid in surgically treated isolated spine trauma
CONCLUSION: Our study demonstrated that TXA is safe for isolated spine trauma. It is challenging to determine whether TXA effectively reduces blood loss because most surgeons prefer TXA for open or multilevel cases. Further, larger studies are necessary to explore the rate, dosage, and mode of administration of TXA.PMID:38680673 | PMC:PMC11045465 | DOI:10.5312/wjo.v15.i4.346 (Source: World Journal of Orthopaedics)

Temporomandibular Joint and Dental Complications in Long-Term Survivors of Children with Leukemia after Chemoradiotherapy and Stem Cell Transplantation
AbstractThe purpose of this study was to investigate the long-term effects of chemoradiotherapy and transplantation on the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and dental status in leukemia and stem cell transplantation (SCT) patients. The study included 44 patients and 22 controls. Participants were categorized into three groups: patients with leukemia in Group-1 (n = 22), patients with SCT in Group-2 (n = 22), and controls in Group-3 (n = 22). All patients were evaluated using the Diagnostic Criteria for TMJ Disorders (TMD), as well as clinical and radiographic assessments. TMD was found in 19 (86%) of the 22 patien...

Addressing Thalassaemia Management from Patients' Perspectives: An International Collaborative Assessment
Conclusions: Important improvements in the care of thalassaemia patients have been documented during the past few decades. Nevertheless, additional focus is required through national healthcare systems to effectively address the many unmet needs revealed by our recent survey, as well as to achieve satisfactory patient outcomes.PMID:38674296 | PMC:PMC11052322 | DOI:10.3390/medicina60040650 (Source: Medicina (Kaunas))
