Antiviral and synergistic effects of photo-energy with acyclovir on herpes simplex virus type 1 infection
Virology. 2024 Mar 31;595:110063. doi: 10.1016/j.virol.2024.110063. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis experimental study aimed to evaluate the antiviral and synergistic effects of photoenergy irradiation on human herpes simplex virus type I (HSV-1) infection. We assessed viral replication, plaque formation, and relevant viral gene expression to examine the antiviral and synergistic effects of blue light (BL) with acyclovir treatment. Our results showed that daily BL (10 J/cm2) irradiation inhibited plaque-forming ability and decreased viral copy numbers in HSV-1-infected monkey kidney epithelial Vero cells and primary hum...

Eczema Herpeticum Complicating Atopic Dermatitis: A Rare Presentation
Cureus. 2024 Feb 28;16(2):e55171. doi: 10.7759/cureus.55171. eCollection 2024 Feb.ABSTRACTAtopic dermatitis (AD) has become a global health concern due to an increase in its frequency over the past few decades. This illness not only reduces the quality of life but also imposes a considerable financial burden due to the increased risk of skin infections. This case report explores the presentation of a four-month-old male infant with a personal history of atopic dermatitis that developed yellow scaly lesions on the scalp, which were assumed to be cradle cap. However, there was a clinical worsening of the cutaneous lesions, w...

Acute-Onset Lower Extremity Weakness and Urinary Retention in a Chronically Immunosuppressed Patient: Diagnosis and Management of Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2 Myelitis
Cureus. 2024 Feb 29;16(2):e55248. doi: 10.7759/cureus.55248. eCollection 2024 Feb.ABSTRACTA 34-year-old immunosuppressed male presented with worsening bilateral lower extremity weakness and urinary retention accompanied by a painless clean-based chancre on his glans penis. Physical examination revealed symmetrically diminished lower extremity weakness most pronounced with hip flexion and knee extension and absent Achilles reflexes. Full MRI spine without contrast was noncontributory. Lumbar puncture showed elevated protein and total nucleated cells with lymphocytic predominance. Both CSF and serum polymerase chain reaction...

A case report: recurrent anemia related to long term acyclovir use in a pregnant HIV infected Ugandan
Abstract: This case report describes a pregnant patient with recent diagnosis of Human Immuno-Deficiency Virus (HIV) infection initiated on Anti-Retroviral Therapy (ART) in the second trimester, as well as high dose acyclovir high for large infected genital warts. She had no other HIV related opportunistic infections, and no prior anti tuberculosis treatment or preventive medication. Despite little response to acyclovir, patient was continuing on acyclovir for over 4 months. She subsequently developed recurrent anemia requiring frequent transfusion (14 units in total) over a 6-week period. On stopping acyclovir, the anemia ...

Ultrathin organosiloxane membrane for precision organic solvent nanofiltration
Nat Commun. 2024 Mar 30;15(1):2800. doi: 10.1038/s41467-024-47115-9.ABSTRACTPromising advances in membrane technology can lead to energy-saving and eco-friendly solutions in industrial sectors. This work demonstrates a highly selective membrane with ultrathin and highly interconnected organosiloxane polymer nanolayers by initiated chemical vapor deposition to effectively separate solutes within the molecular weight range of 150-300 g mol-1. We optimize the poly(1,3,5,7-tetravinyl-1,3,5,7-tetramethylcyclotetrasiloxane) membrane by adjusting both the thickness of the selective layer and the pore sizes of its support membrane...

Myalgia ‐induced discovery of rhabdomyolysis complicating generalized varicella in an immunocompetent patient: Case report and review of the literature
In this study, we describe a case of rhabdomyolysis complicating a VZV infection in a black subject. The patient was a 24-year-old black African with no particular medical history and was immunocompetent. He presented with an acute onset of generalized rash, fever, and generalized weakness. Physical examination revealed vesicular lesions typical of chickenpox. Antipyretic treatment combined with acyclovir was instituted in hospital. At the 72nd hour, diffuse myalgia developed. Muscle enzyme tests revealed CPK elevated to 40 times the upper limit of normal, LDH elevated to 2 times the upper limit of normal, ASAT and ALAT el...

Associations between Different Antivirals and Hospital acquired Acute Kidney Injury in Adults with Herpes Zoster
CONCLUSIONS: Among antiviral therapies for herpes zoster, we found different risks of hospital acquired AKI among the patients receiving different antivirals, in particular, those administered intravenously. Among intravenous antivirals, acyclovir was associated with highest risk of hospital acquired AKI, followed by penciclovir/ganciclovir and foscarnet. Confirmation studies with large samples from other populations are warranted.PMID:38527975 | DOI:10.2215/CJN.0000000000000452 (Source: Herpes)
