Flavonoids with Anti-Herpes Simplex Virus Properties: Deciphering Their Mechanisms in Disrupting the Viral Life Cycle
Viruses. 2023 Nov 29;15(12):2340. doi: 10.3390/v15122340.ABSTRACTThe herpes simplex virus (HSV) is a double-stranded DNA human virus that causes persistent infections with recurrent outbreaks. HSV exists in two forms: HSV-1, responsible for oral herpes, and HSV-2, primarily causing genital herpes. Both types can lead to significant complications, including neurological issues. Conventional treatment, involving acyclovir and its derivatives, faces challenges due to drug resistance. This underscores the imperative for continual research and development of new drugs, with a particular emphasis on exploring the potential of na...

Clinical Review of Risk of Nephrotoxicity with Acyclovir Use for Treatment of Herpes Simplex Virus Infections in Neonates and Children
CONCLUSIONS: The risk of ACV-associated nephrotoxicity was lower among neonates compared with older children. Future studies are needed to identify the optimal dosage that minimizes toxicities and maximizes the efficacy of ACV in children with HSE.PMID:38130345 | PMC:PMC10731947 | DOI:10.5863/1551-6776-28.6.490 (Source: Herpes)

Multidermatomal herpes zoster triggered by psychological stress in an immunocompetent young adult: a rare case report and clinical insights
CONCLUSION: This case underscores the rare occurrence of multidermatomal HZ in an immunocompetent young adult triggered by psychological stress. The atypical presentation and potential role of stress in viral reactivation emphasize the complex interaction between the nervous and immune systems. Integrated clinical management, stress reduction strategies, and antiviral therapy were effective in resolving the condition. Further research is warranted to elucidate the mechanisms underlying stress-induced viral reactivation and its clinical implications.PMID:38098591 | PMC:PMC10718367 | DOI:10.1097/MS9.0000000000001409 (Source: Annals of Medicine)

Analysis of antiviral drug properties of thymidine kinase of herpes B virus using recombinant herpes simplex virus 1
In this study, we examined the property of BV thymidine kinase (TK) against anti-herpes drugs using a recombinant herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) carrying BV TK gene. We found that HSV-1 carrying BV TK was similarly sensitive to GCV as HSV-1 carrying varicella zoster virus TK. In addition, we demonstrated that BV TK was not mutated in the GCV- and ACV-resistant HSV-1 carrying BV TK, suggesting that ACV- or GCV-resistant BV might be rare during treatment with these antiviral drugs. These data can provide a new insight into the properties of BV TK in terms of the development of drug resistance.PMID:38095468 | DOI:10.1128...

Herpetic Whitlow Associated With an Eating Disorder: A Case Report
Cureus. 2023 Nov 11;15(11):e48654. doi: 10.7759/cureus.48654. eCollection 2023 Nov.ABSTRACTHerpetic whitlow is a localized cutaneous viral infection primarily affecting the fingers, caused by herpes simplex virus types 1 (HSV-1) or 2 (HSV-2). It can be recurrent due to behavioral factors associated with eating disorders, such as bulimia nervosa. We would like to introduce "Jehany Sign," suggesting the term for the association of bulimia nervosa with HSV infections. Here, we present the case of a 50-year-old pre-diabetic female with recurrent herpetic whitlow on her left index finger associated with self-induced vomiting an...
