Rickettsioses are “small, obligate intracellular, gram-negative, aerobic coccobacillary α-proeobacteria” from the genuses Rickettsia, Anaplasma, Coxiella, Ehrlichia, and Orientia genuses. Often they cause limited health problems but can cause severe disease and death. They present with a fever and other non-specific signs and symptoms, usually with a rash and lymphadenopathy. Other problems can include:
Cardiac – endocarditis, myocarditis, pericarditis
Gastrointestinal – abdominal pain, acute abdomen, cholecystitis, hepatitis, pancreatitis
Heme/Lymph – hemophagocytosis, lymph...

Drug for rare disorder shows promise for treating herpes viruses
(University of Illinois at Chicago) New research shows that the antiviral activity of the drug -- called phenylbutyrate, or PBA -- was even better when used along with acyclovir, a common HSV-1 treatment. When used in combination, less acyclovir is needed to effectively suppress the virus compared to acyclovir alone -- this is important because acyclovir is also known to have toxic side effects in the kidneys. Herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections are common with an estimated 50% of the US population being infected by age 30, and with latent infection harboring in the trigeminal nerve in 100% of people by age 60 years. HSV infections can cause a vesicular or pustular skin rash that is painful, burning or pruritic and also flu-like symptoms with fever, chills, headache, and fatigue. HSV can also be asymptomatic.

Herpes zoster vaccine reduces chances of shingles after stem cell transplants
This NIHR Signal says that the risk of shingles is about 10% per year in adults after autologous stem cell transplant. The evidence summary indicates that two doses of deactivated herpes zoster vaccine could be a safe and effective way to reduce that risk by about two thirds.This effect is similar to another, heat-treated, non-live vaccine. Either vaccine could reduce the pain and need for medical treatment associated with shingles, and long-lasting complications such as post-herpetic neuralgia.
