Biomimetic Synthesis of an Antiviral Cinnamoylphloroglucinol Collection from Cleistocalyx operculatus: A Synthesis Strategy Based on Biogenetic Building Blocks
Angew Chem Int Ed Engl. 2023 Oct 17:e202312568. doi: 10.1002/anie.202312568. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA synthesis strategy based on biogenetic building blocks for the collective and divergent biomimetic syntheses of cleistoperlones A-F (1-6), a cinnamoylphloroglucinol collection discovered from Cleistocalyx operculatus, has been developed. These syntheses were proceeded successfully in only six to seven steps starting from the commercially available 1,3,5-benzenetriol involving oxidative activation of stable biogenetic building blocks into activated forms as a crucial step. Key features of the syntheses include a uniq...

Atypical Clinical presentation of a patient with Monkeypox
Discussion Cellulitis lesions are an atypical clinical feature of Monkeypox virus infection. Its management, using antibiotics and antiviral drugs, treated the infection and confined the spread of the virus around the patient's nose.PMID:37847249 (Source: Ir Med J)

Inhibition of Herpes Simplex Virus by Wedelolactone via Targeting Viral Envelope and Cellular TBK1/IRF3 and SOCS1/STAT3 pathways
Int J Antimicrob Agents. 2023 Oct 12:107000. doi: 10.1016/j.ijantimicag.2023.107000. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDevelopment of novel anti-herpes simplex virus (HSV) agents with active mechanisms different from nucleoside analogues is of high importance. Herein, we discovered that the natural coumarin compound wedelolactone (WDL) possessed inhibitory effects against both HSV-1 and HSV-2 in different cell lines with low toxicity, superior to the effects of acyclovir. WDL can directly inactivate the HSV particle via destruction of viral envelope, and block HSV replication process after virus adsorption, different from the ...

Limbic Encephalitis Associated with Human Herpesvirus-7 Infection in an Immunocompetent Adolescent
We present the case of a 17-year-old immunocompetent male with remote history of seizure who arrived in status epilepticus. Upon resolution, he required hospitalization for worsening encephalopathy. Electroencephalogram (EEG) revealed bilateral temporal lobe dysfunction and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed increased signaling in bilateral medial temporal lobes with hippocampal microhemorrhages. Empiric intravenous (IV) acyclovir was initiated despite initially negative cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) studies due to concern for herpes simplex virus (HSV) encephalitis. The patient improved and was discharged on hospital day...

Bullous pemphigoid in a previously healthy adolescent: a case report and literature review
CONCLUSION: BP manifestations are polymorphic; physicians should keep in mind that they may present with non-bullous, pruritic lesions, which may persist for some days to several months before bullae appear. Although this disease is rare in the young population, it should be considered in the differential diagnosis of bullous lesions.PMID:37811084 | PMC:PMC10552980 | DOI:10.1097/MS9.0000000000000995 (Source: Annals of Medicine)

Detection of herpes simplex viruses in the oral lesions of patients with pemphigus vulgaris: Is it diagnostic or predictive of disease severity?
CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated a significant prevalence of HSV1 in oral pemphigus lesions, and acyclovir therapy may play a significant role in managing these patients. However, HSV's role in the pathogenesis of pemphigus vulgaris cannot be clearly determined.PMID:37799351 | PMC:PMC10549799 | DOI:10.1002/ski2.261 (Source: Herpes)

Case Report: Spectrum of interesting ocular manifestations following COVID-19 vaccination: a case series of real-world presentations
CONCLUSIONS AND IMPORTANCE: Visual symptoms and various ocular adverse events can occur following COVID-19 vaccination, which warrants further investigation and urgent intervention if necessary. We would suggest patients receiving the COVID-19 vaccination be aware of possible ocular complications and report any symptoms, regardless of severity.PMID:37790912 | PMC:PMC10542575 | DOI:10.3389/fcimb.2023.1243055 (Source: Herpes)
