Pre-treatment clinical assessment in head and neck cancer: United Kingdom National Multidisciplinary Guidelines. J Laryngol Otol. 2016 May;130(S2):S13-S22 Authors: Robson A, Sturman J, Williamson P, Conboy P, Penney S, Wood H Abstract This is the official guideline endorsed by the specialty associations involved in the care of head and neck cancer patients in the UK. This paper provides recommendations on the pre-treatment clinical assessment of patients presenting with head and neck cancer. Recommendations • Comorbidity data should be collected as it is important in the analysis of survival, quality of life and functional outcomes after treatment as well as for comparing results of different treatment regimens and different centres. (R) • Patients with hypertension of over 180/110 or associated target organ damage, should have antihypertensive medication started pre-operatively as per British Hypertension Society guidelines. (R) • Rapidly correcting pre-operative hypertension with beta blockade appears to cause higher mortality due to stroke and hypotension and should not be used. (R) • Patients with poorly controlled or unstable ischaemic heart disease should be referred for cardiology assessment pre-operatively. (G) • Patients within one year of drug eluting stents should be discussed with the cardiologist who was responsible for their percutaneous coronary intervention pre-operatively with regard to cessation of antiplatelet m...

AbstractThis is a letter to the Editor concerning the recently published article by Zerem et al. The paper described a 12yo female with multisystem mitochondrial disorder (MID) due to the compound heterozygous variants c.1963_1964dupAT and p.Ile382Met inOPA1 manifesting phenotypically with congenital nystagmus, developmental delay, visual impairment, gait ataxia, epilepsy, a stroke-like episode (SLE) with encephalopathy and vomiting, and hearing impairment. This interesting case could be more meaningful by providing more information about the treatment of the SLE/stroke-like lesion (SLL), about the morphological characteri...
AbstractGlioblastoma is a devastating tumor affecting the central nervous system with infiltrative capacity, high proliferation rate and chemoresistance. Therefore, it is urgent to find new therapeutic alternatives that improve this prognosis. Herein, we focused on tannic acid (TA) a polyphenol with antioxidant and antiproliferative activities. In this work, the antitumor and antioxidant effects of TA on rat (C6) glioblastoma cells and their cytotoxicity relative to primary astrocyte cultures were evaluated in vitro. Cells were exposed to TA of 6.25 to 75 μM for 24, 48 and/or 72 h. In addition, colony formati...
High blood pressure: A common diagnosis, that shows hardly any symptoms, but can be deadly. Hardened arteries and blood forced too hard against artery walls can lead to a heart attack or stroke. Fortunately, there are lifestyle improvements that can lower blood pressure and potentially save your life.
Abbott Laboratories has been wildly successful with its FreeStyle Libre continuous glucose monitor (CGM) since winning FDA approval in 2017, but it seems some investors and patients may be getting restless as the U.S. market waits for the second-generation of the blockbuster technology. We first noted some signs of impatience for Libre 2 in our coverage of Abbott's third-quarter earnings call in October. One reader commented on that article that "I donât particularly care about investors becoming impatient, as a Freestyle Libre user I am growing impatie...
