One ‐Pot Etching Pyrolysis to Defect‐Rich Carbon Nanosheets to Construct Multiheteroatom‐Coordinated Iron Sites for Efficient Oxygen Reduction
Regulating the carbon defects and the coordination structure shows great potential for promoting oxygen reduction reaction of single-atom catalysts. One-Pot Etching Pyrolysis strategy is proposed to construct Fe single-atom catalysts (Fe-SACs) with high specific surface area and controllable coordination structure. The Fe-SACs after structural optimization show significantly improved oxygen reduction reaction. AbstractConstructing multiheteroatom coordination structure in carbonaceous substrates demonstrates an effective method to accelerate the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) of supported single-atom catalyst. Herein, the...

Imbalanced and Unchecked: The Role of Metal Dyshomeostasis in Driving COPD Progression
COPD. 2024 Dec;21(1):2322605. doi: 10.1080/15412555.2024.2322605. Epub 2024 Apr 9.ABSTRACTChronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a chronic respiratory condition characterized by persistent inflammation and oxidative stress, which ultimately leads to progressive restriction of airflow. Extensive research findings have cogently suggested that the dysregulation of essential transition metal ions, notably iron, copper, and zinc, stands as a critical nexus in the perpetuation of inflammatory processes and oxidative damage within the lungs of COPD patients. Unraveling the intricate interplay between metal homeostasis, o...

A dynamic regulatory switch for phase separation of FUS protein: Zinc ions and zinc finger domain
Biochem Biophys Res Commun. 2024 Apr 7;710:149862. doi: 10.1016/j.bbrc.2024.149862. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTZinc is an important trace element in the human body, and its homeostasis is closely related to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Cytoplasmic FUS proteins from patients with ALS aggregate their important pathologic markers. Liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) of FUS can lead to its aggregation. However, whether and how zinc homeostasis affects the aggregation of disease-associated FUS proteins in the cytoplasm remains unclear. Here, we found that zinc ion enhances LLPS and promotes the aggregation in the c...

Metal nanoparticle-induced effects on green toads (Amphibia, Anura) under climate change: conservation implications
In this study, we investigated the survival, developmental, behavioral, and histological reactions of Bufotes viridis embryos and larvae exposed to different NPs for a duration of 10 days, using lethal concentrations (LC25%, LC50%, and LC75% mg/L) under both ambient (AT: 18 °C) and high (HT: 21 °C) temperatures. Based on LC, NiONPs > ZnONPs > CuONPs > Al2O3NPs > TiO2NPs > Fe3O4NPs showed the highest mortality at AT. A similar pattern was observed at HT, although mortality occurred at lower concentrations and Fe3O4NPs were more toxic than TiO2NPs. The results indicated that increasing concentrations of NPs ...

Disrupted odontoblast differentiation and dentin dysplasia in < em > Epiprofin < /em > -deficient mice
Int J Dev Biol. 2024;68(1):19-24. doi: 10.1387/ijdb.240029lj.ABSTRACTTooth formation is a process tightly regulated by reciprocal interactions between epithelial and mesenchymal tissues. These epithelial-mesenchyme interactions regulate the expression of target genes via transcription factors. Among the regulatory elements governing this process, Epiprofin/Sp6 is a zinc finger transcription factor which is expressed in the embryonic dental epithelium and in differentiating pre-odontoblasts. Epiprofin knockout (Epfn-/-) mice present severe dental abnormalities, such as supernumerary teeth and enamel hypoplasia. Here, we des...

Coreactant-free aggregation-induced electrochemiluminescence system based on the novel zinc-luminol metal-organic gel for ultrasensitive detection of PiRNA-823
Biosens Bioelectron. 2024 Apr 4;255:116263. doi: 10.1016/j.bios.2024.116263. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAggregation-induced electrochemiluminescence (AIECL) technology has aroused widespread interest due to the significant improve in ECL response by solving the problems of aggregation-caused quenching and poor water solubility of the luminophore. However, the existing AIECL emitters still suffer from low ECL efficiency, additional coreactants and complex synthesis steps, which greatly limit their applications. Herein, luminol, as a kind of AIE molecule, was assembled with Zn2+ nodes to obtain a novel microflower-like Zi...

Intestinal inflammation marker calprotectin regulates epithelial intestinal zinc metabolism and proliferation in mouse jejunal organoids
In this study we aimed to characterize the effect of calprotectin on mouse jejunal organoids as a model epithelium, focusing on Zn2+ metabolism and cell proliferation. CP addition upregulated the expression of the Zn2+ absorptive transporter Slc39a4 and of methallothionein Mt1 in a Zn2+-sensitive manner, while downregulating the expression of the Zn2+ exporter Slc30a2 and of methallothionein 2 (Mt2). These effects were greatly attenuated with a CP variant lacking the metal binding capacity. Globally, these observations indicate adaptation to low Zn2+ levels. CP had antiproliferative effects and reduced the expression of pr...
