Cellulose nanofiber-based multifunctional composite films integrated with zinc doped-grapefruit peel-based carbon quantum dots
This study aimed to develop a multifunctional active composite film to extend the shelf life of minced pork. The composite film was prepared by incorporating zinc-doped grapefruit peel-derived carbon quantum dots (Zn-GFP-CD) into a cellulose nanofiber (CNF) matrix. The resulting film significantly improved UV-blocking properties from 39.0 % to 85.7 % while maintaining the film transparency. Additionally, the CNF/Zn-GFP-CD5% composite film exhibits strong antioxidant activity with ABTS and DPPH radical scavenging activities of 99.8 % and 77.4 %, respectively. The composite film also showed excellent antibacterial activity a...

Histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitor specificity determinants are preserved in a class of dual HDAC/non-covalent proteasome inhibitors
Bioorg Med Chem. 2024 Mar 16;104:117680. doi: 10.1016/j.bmc.2024.117680. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMany disease states require multiple drugs to inhibit multiple targets for their effective treatment/management, i.e. a drug cocktail regimen, or "polypharmacy". Polypharmacology, in contrast, is the development of single agents that can inhibit multiple targets. Each strategy is associated with advantages and disadvantages. Motivated by promising clinical trial data for the treatment of multiple myeloma with the combination of the HDAC6 inhibitor ricolinostat and the proteasome inhibitor bortezomib, we herein describe a ...

FaissMolLib: An efficient and easy deployable tool for ligand-based virtual screening
Comput Biol Chem. 2024 Apr 1;110:108057. doi: 10.1016/j.compbiolchem.2024.108057. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTVirtual screening-based molecular similarity and fingerprint are crucial in drug design, target prediction, and ADMET prediction, aiding in identifying potential hits and optimizing lead compounds. However, challenges such as lack of comprehensive open-source molecular fingerprint databases and efficient search methods for virtual screening are prevalent. To address these issues, we introduce FaissMolLib, an open-source virtual screening tool that integrates 2.8 million compounds from ChEMBL and ZINC databases. N...

Distribution and bioaccumulation of trace elements in two Cyprinidae fish species in the Indus river, Pakistan, including the impact of hydraulic structure on macroinvertebrates' biodiversity
Environ Res. 2024 Apr 4:118882. doi: 10.1016/j.envres.2024.118882. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe concentration of trace elements (chromium, lead, zinc, copper, manganese, and iron) was determined in water, sediment and tissues of two Cyprinidae fish species - Labeo rohita and Tor putitora - collected from the eight sampling stations of Indus River in 2022 for four successive seasons (autumn, winter, spring, summer), and also study the present condition of macroinvertebrates after the construction of hydraulic structure. The obtained results of trace element concentrations in the Indus River were higher than the accepta...

Systematic Analysis of the Relationship Between Elevated Zinc and Epilepsy
AbstractPrevious studies have indicated a potential relationship between zinc and epilepsy. The aim of this study is to investigate the causal relationship between zinc, zinc-dependent carbonic anhydrase, and gray matter volume in brain regions enriched with zinc and epilepsy, as well as explore the possible mechanisms by which zinc contributes to epilepsy. First, this study assessed the risk causality between zinc, carbonic anhydrase, and gray matter volume alterations in zinc-enriched brain regions and various subtypes of epilepsy based on Two-sample Mendelian randomization analysis. And then, this study conducted GO/KEG...
