Hypercalcaemia: intensive care or general ward
Aktuelle Urol. 2024 Feb;55(1):54-59. doi: 10.1055/a-2201-6428. Epub 2024 Feb 8.ABSTRACTHypercalcaemia is a life-threatening electrolyte imbalance, which not only occurs in the context of an endocrinological disease but is also frequently associated with a tumour. Its severity is determined by the level of deviation from normal, acuity of occurrence, and severity of the symptoms. These are unspecific, can affect any organ system and ultimately result in a life-threatening hypercalcaemic crisis characterised by cardiac arrhythmia, metabolic acidosis, exsiccosis, fever, psychotic states and, ultimately, coma. Endocrinological...

Relationship between serum vitamin D levels and the prevalence of knee osteoarthritis: A retrospective study on 3424 subjects
CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this study indicate a higher prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in patients with knee osteoarthritis. Maintaining adequate serum 25-(OH) vitamin D3 levels may prevent knee osteoarthritis, especially in women below 65.PMID:38306069 | DOI:10.3233/THC-230802 (Source: Technology and Health Care)

Vitamin D as a Modulator of Neuroinflammation: Implications for Brain Health
Curr Pharm Des. 2024 Feb 1. doi: 10.2174/0113816128281314231219113942. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNeuroinflammation represents a critical immune response within the brain, playing a pivotal role in defense against injury and infection. However, when this response becomes chronic, it can contribute to the development of various neurodegenerative and psychiatric disorders. This bibliographic review delves into the role of vitamin D in modulating neuroinflammation and its implications for brain health, particularly in the context of neurological and psychiatric disorders. While vitamin D is traditionally associated with ca...

Alterations in CD4+ T Cell Cytokines Profile in Female Patients with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis Following Vitamin D Supplementation: A Double-blind, Randomized Clinical Trial
CONCLUSION: The findings suggest that vitamin D supplementation may hold potential benefits for autoimmune diseases, such as HT. However, further longitudinal clinical trials are necessary to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the specific effects of vitamin D on HT.CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: IRCT2016110130644N1.PMID:38284726 | DOI:10.2174/0118715303273297231226153751 (Source: Endocrine, Metabolic and Immune Disorders Drug Targets)

Relationship between vitamin B12, iron, folic acid, homocystein and vitamin D3 serum levels in orofacial sicca and/or Sj ögren's syndrome in a Hungarian patient population
Orv Hetil. 2024 Jan 28;165(4):147-154. doi: 10.1556/650.2024.32951. Level of biochemical parameters in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus depending on the genotype of the FokI polymorphism in the vitamin D3 receptor (VDR gene)
CONCLUSION: Our study did not provide evidence for an association of the investigated FokI polymorphism of the VDR gene with T2DM in the Slovak population. Further research is needed to evaluate the impact of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the VDR gene, focusing on related genetic analyses in a larger T2DM cohort.PMID:38272481 | DOI:10.21101/cejph.a7837 (Source: Central European Journal of Public Health)

Association between vitamin D and endometriosis among American women: National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey
This study aimed to examine the assoc iation between endometriosis and serum vitamin D levels. From the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, this study examined the cross-sectional data of American women aged 20–54 years from 2001 to 2006. After adjusting for covariates, multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to assess correlations. A total of 3,232 women were included in this study. The multiple linear regression model demonstrated a negative correlation between the serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) concentration and the risk of endometriosis after controlling for all confounding var...
