Area of hydronephrosis is a useful predictive factor of impacted ureteral stones
AbstractUreteroscopic lithotripsy for impacted stones is challenging, but it is important to predict impacted stones preoperatively. Hydronephrosis, which is evaluated by a grading system, is often apparent in impacted stones. However, the currently used grading system is a qualitative evaluation. We, therefore, focused on aquantitative evaluation: the area of hydronephrosis. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the area of hydronephrosis could predict impacted stones more accurately than Society for Fetal Urology grade. We retrospectively identified 160 patients who underwent ureteroscopic lithotripsy for uret...

ELABELA-derived peptide ELA13 attenuates kidney fibrosis by inhibiting the Smad and ERK signaling pathways
In conclusion, ELA13 protected against kidney fibrosis through inhibiting the Smad and ERK signaling pathways and could thus be a promising candidate for anti-renal fibrosis treatment. (Source: Journal of Zhejiang University. Science. B.)

Efficacy of flexible ureterorenoscopy with holmium laser in the management of calyceal diverticular calculi
In this study, we retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of 27 patients with calyceal diverticular calculi admitted to the Department of Urology of the Zigong First People ’s Hospital from May 2018 to May 2021. Intraoperatively, the diverticular neck was found in all 27 patients, but flexible ureterorenoscopy lithotripsy was not performed in 2 cases because of the slender diverticular neck, and the success rate of the operation was 92.6%. Of the 25 patients with suc cessful lithotripsy, the mean operative time was 76.9 ± 35.5 (43–200) min. There were no serious intraoperative complications such as ureteral per...

Preventing iatrogenic ureteral injury in colorectal surgery: a comprehensive and systematic review of the last 2 decades of literature and future perspectives
AbstractIatrogenic ureteral injury (IUI) during colorectal surgery is a rare complication but related to a serious burden of morbidity. This comprehensive and systematic review aims to provide a critical overview of the most recent literature about IUI prevention techniques in colorectal surgery. We performed a comprehensive and systematic review of studies published from 2000 to 2022 and assessed the use of techniques for ureteral injury prevention and intraoperative localization. 26 publications were included, divided into stent-based (prophylactic/lighted ureteral stent and near-infrared fluorescent ureteral catheter [P...

Efficacy of Aspiration-Assisted Ureteral Access Sheath (ClearPETRA) in Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery
Conclusion: We found that ClearPETRA reduces the likelihood of postoperative fever after RIRS surgeries. Moreover, we can say that the use of ClearPETRA in RIRS, especially for stones larger than 2 cm, reduces the operation time, increases the SFR, and also reduces sepsis rates.PMID:38546503 | DOI:10.1089/lap.2024.0076 (Source: Adv Data)
