Phenolic Compounds and Metals in Some Edible Annonaceae Fruits.
Abstract The concentrations of 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid, caffeic acid, catechin, chlorogenic acid, epicatechin, gallic acid, p-coumaric acid, quercetin, rutin, ferulic acid, and the major metals in graviola (Annona muricata), atemoya (A. squamosa x A. cherimola), fruta do conde (A. squamosa), biribá (Rollinia mucosa), and the North American pawpaw (Asimina triloba) were determined by UPLC-ESI (-)-MS/MS. It enabled the identification and quantification of phenolic compounds. Catechin was only found in atemoya, at a concentration of 38.6 μg/g-dw. Only 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid was found in the fruit pulp...

Molecules, Vol. 24, Pages 4419: Anti-Infective and Anti-Cancer Properties of the Annona Species: Their Ethnomedicinal Uses, Alkaloid Diversity, and Pharmacological Activities
Keller Annona species have been a valuable source of anti-infective and anticancer agents. However, only limited evaluations of their alkaloids have been carried out. This review collates and evaluates the biological data from extracts and purified isolates for their anti-infective and anti-cancer activities. An isoquinoline backbone is a major structural alkaloid moiety of the Annona genus, and more than 83 alkaloids have been isolated from this genus alone. Crude extracts of Annona genus are reported with moderate activities against Plasmodium falciparum showing larvicidal activities. However, no pure compounds from...

Efficacy of a Peruvian Botanical Remedy (Sabell A4+) for Treating Liver Disease and Protecting Gastric Mucosal Integrity.
We report the efficacy of A4+ and its components using a variety of in vitro and in vivo disease models. The methods used included tests for antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antiviral activity as well as mouse models of liver disease, including Concanavalin A-induced immune-mediated hepatitis and a bile duct ligation model for evaluating sickness behaviour associated with liver disease. Rat models were used to evaluate the gastric mucosal protective property of A4+ following indomethacin challenge and to evaluate its anti-inflammatory action in an "air pouch" model. In all tests, A4+ proved to be more effective than pla...

Effect of vacuum-thermosonication on the inactivation of Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, polyphenol oxidase and the quality parameters of soursop puree
Publication date: Available online 18 November 2019Source: Innovative Food Science & Emerging TechnologiesAuthor(s): Oscar G. Martínez-Moreno, Luis M. Anaya-Esparza, Jorge A. Sánchez-Burgos, Libier Meza-Espinoza, Alejandro Pérez-Larios, J. Emanuel Bojorquez-Quintal, Efigenia Montalvo-GonzálezAbstractThe combined effect of vacuum, heat and ultrasound (vacuum-thermosonication, VTS) on soursop puree was investigated with regard to the viability of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, inactivation of polyphenol oxidase and sensory quality. The VTS conditions were: vacuum (8.46, 11 and 16.93 kPa), heat (40, 45 and ...

How does the degree of inulin polymerization affect the bioaccessibility of bioactive compounds from soursop whey beverage during in vitro gastrointestinal digestion?
Publication date: Available online 12 November 2019Source: Food HydrocolloidsAuthor(s): Jonas T. Guimarães, Eric Keven Silva, Henrique S. Arruda, Monica Q. Freitas, Glaucia M. Pastore, M. Angela A. Meireles, Adriano G. CruzAbstractThe inulin is known as a prebiotic carbohydrate with beneficial health properties in addition to its technological properties as a texture modifier and stabilizer of food products. Despite that, a little is known about the influence of the degree of inulin polymerization during gastrointestinal digestion. Then, the objective of this study was to evaluate if the degree of inulin polymerization in...

Non-thermal processing of inulin-enriched soursop whey beverage using supercritical carbon dioxide technology
Publication date: Available online 21 September 2019Source: The Journal of Supercritical FluidsAuthor(s): Eric Keven Silva, Jonas T. Guimarães, Ana Letícia R. Costa, Adriano G. Cruz, M. Angela A. MeirelesAbstractThe effects of supercritical CO2 technology on the non-thermal processing of soursop (Annona muricata L.) whey beverage enriched with inulin, a prebiotic carbohydrate, were analyzed. The functional dairy beverage was processed employing different supercritical process conditions: 35 and 55 °C, 10 and 20 MPa, and a CO2 volume ratio of 20 and 50%. Physicochemical properties (pH, soluble solids, ζ-potential), ...
