Chitosan coated selenium: A versatile nano-delivery system for molecular cargoes
Int J Biol Macromol. 2024 Apr 8:131176. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2024.131176. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe use of nanoscale delivery platforms holds tremendous potential to overcome the current limitations associated with the conventional delivery of genetic materials and hydrophobic compounds. Therefore, there is an imperative need to develop a suitable alternative nano-enabled delivery platform to overcome these limitations. This work reports the first one-step hydrothermal synthesis of chitosan functionalized selenium nanoparticles (Selenium-chitosan, SeNP) that are capable of serving as a versatile nanodelivery pla...

Selenium, diabetes, and their intricate sex-specific relationship
Trends Endocrinol Metab. 2024 Apr 10:S1043-2760(24)00066-3. doi: 10.1016/j.tem.2024.03.004. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSelenium (Se) is an essential trace element, which is inserted as selenocysteine (Sec) into selenoproteins during biosynthesis, orchestrating their expression and activity. Se is associated with both beneficial and detrimental health effects; deficient supply or uncontrolled supplementation raises concerns. In particular, Se was associated with an increased incidence of type 2 diabetes (T2D) in a secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial (RCT). In this review, we discuss the intricate relation...

Molecules, Vol. 29, Pages 1686: Herbal Polyphenols as Selenium Reducers in the Green Synthesis of Selenium Nanoparticles: Antibacterial and Antioxidant Capabilities of the Obtained SeNPs
In this study, herbal extracts were used in the green synthesis of SeNPs. The influence of herbal species, the ratio of the reagents, and post-reaction heating on the antibacterial and antioxidant properties of obtained SeNPs were investigated. The relationship between these properties and the physical parameters of obtained nanoparticles (e.g., size, shape) was also studied. It has been proven that SeNPs showed higher antioxidant and antibacterial properties in comparison to herbal extracts taken for their synthesis. Heating of the post-reaction mixture did not affect the SeNP size, shape, or other studied properties. (Source: Molecules)

Selenium-modified activated coke: a high-capacity and facile designed Hg < sup > 0 < /sup > adsorbent for coal-fired flue gas
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2024 Apr 8. doi: 10.1007/s11356-024-32995-7. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe substantial amount of mercury emissions from coal-fired flue gas causes severe environmental contamination. With the Minamata Convention now officially in force, it is critical to strengthen mercury pollution control. Existing activated carbon injection technologies suffer from poor desulfurization performance and risk secondary-release risks. Therefore, considering the potential industrial application of adsorbents, we selected cost-effective and readily available activated coke (AC) as the carrier in this study. Fou...

Disease-modifying potential of diphenyl diselenide in an experimental osteoarthritis model
Biochem Biophys Res Commun. 2024 Apr 4;710:149885. doi: 10.1016/j.bbrc.2024.149885. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOxidative stress is a key factor in the disruption of cartilage homeostasis during the development of osteoarthritis (OA). Organic selenium (Se)-containing compounds such as diselenides have excellent antioxidant activity and may prevent related diseases. We aimed to examine the benefits of the synthetic small molecule diphenyl diselenide (DPDSe) in OA models in vitro and in vivo. Our findings showed that DPDSe could maintain extracellular matrix (ECM) homeostasis and inhibit reactive oxygen species (ROS) produ...
