Multifunctional Inorganic-Organic Composite Carriers for Synergistic Dual Therapy of Melanoma
ACS Biomater Sci Eng. 2024 Mar 23. doi: 10.1021/acsbiomaterials.4c00156. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMany methods for cancer treatment have been developed. Among them photothermal therapy (PTT) has drawn the most significant attention due to its noninvasiveness, remote control activation, and low side effects. However, a limited depth of light penetration of PTT is the main drawback. To improve the therapeutic efficiency, the development of combined PTT with other therapeutic agents is highly desirable. In this work, we have designed multifunctional composite carriers based on polylactic acid (PLA) particles decorated wi...

Heavy metals and metalloids exposure and liver function in Chinese adults - A nationally representative cross-sectional study
CONCLUSION: This research highlights the complex relationship between HMM exposure and liver health in Chinese adults, particularly emphasizing metals like manganese, thallium, and selenium. The results suggest a need for public health attention to low dose HMM exposure and underscore the potential benefits of selenium for liver health. Further studies are essential to establish causality.PMID:38518907 | DOI:10.1016/j.envres.2024.118653 (Source: Environmental Research)

Interplay between diphenyl diselenide and copper: Impact on D. melanogaster survival, behavior, and biochemical parameters
Comp Biochem Physiol C Toxicol Pharmacol. 2024 Mar 20:109899. doi: 10.1016/j.cbpc.2024.109899. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCopper (Cu2+) is a biologically essential element that participates in numerous physiological processes. However, elevated concentrations of copper have been associated with cellular oxidative stress and neurodegenerative diseases. Organo‑selenium compounds such as diphenyl diselenide (DPDS) have in vitro and in vivo antioxidant properties. Hence, we hypothesized that DPDS may modulate the toxicity of Cu2+ in Drosophila melanogaster. The acute effects (4 days of exposure) caused by a high concentra...

IJERPH, Vol. 21, Pages 381: Essential and Toxic Elements in Infant Cereal in Brazil: Exposure Risk Assessment
The objective of this study was to assess the cancer and non-cancer risk of exposure to essential and toxic elements in infant cereal in Brazil. In our analyses, we included data from 18 samples of infant cereals made from different raw materials and estimated the incremental lifetime cancer risks and non-cancer hazard quotients (HQs) for their consumption. Rice cereal is particularly concerning because it is immensely popular and usually contains high levels of inorganic arsenic. In addition to arsenic, we assessed aluminum, boron, barium, cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, manganese, nickel, selenium, silver, strontium, an...

Uptake behavior of 73As, 75Se, 197mHg, 212Pb and 210Po on Eichrom pre-filter resin from HCl and HNO3
AbstractThe extraction of73As,75Se,197mHg,212Pb and210Po on Eichrom pre-filter resin was studied in HCl and HNO3 with batch uptake, kinetic and column experiments. There was significant extraction of mercury in HNO3 and HCl, and polonium and selenium in HCl. The kinetics are sufficient to allow for retention on pre-filter columns, and separations of73As from75Se and197mHg, and212Pb from210Po are demonstrated. This retention is important for the development of chemical separations as pre-filter resin is commonly used alongside extraction chromatography resins but its potential for uptake of metal ions is not well characteri...

Synthesis and characterisation of a nucleotide based pro-drug formulated with a peptide into a nano-chemotherapy for colorectal cancer
J Control Release. 2024 Mar 19:S0168-3659(24)00189-5. doi: 10.1016/j.jconrel.2024.03.036. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRecent studies in colorectal cancer patients (CRC) have shown that increased resistance to thymidylate synthase (TS) inhibitors such as 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), reduce the efficacy of standard of care (SoC) treatment regimens. The nucleotide pool cleanser dUTPase is highly expressed in CRC and is an attractive target for potentiating anticancer activity of chemotherapy. The purpose of the current work was to investigate the activity of P1, P4-di(2',5'-dideoxy-5'-selenouridinyl)-tetraphosphate (P4-SedU2), a ...
