A Comprehensive Review on GLP-1 Signaling Pathways in the Management of Diabetes Mellitus - Focus on the Potential Role of GLP-1 Receptors Agonists and Selenium Among Various Organ Systems
Curr Diabetes Rev. 2024 Apr 16. doi: 10.2174/0115733998287178240403055901. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDiabetes Mellitus develops when the body becomes unable to fuel its cells with glucose, which results in the accumulation of sugar excess in the bloodstream. Because it has diverse pathophysiological impacts on the body, diabetes mellitus represents a significant issue of concern in an attempt to find suitable treatment modalities and medications for afflicted diabetic patients. Glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) plays a pivotal role in the incretin effect, emerging as a prospective treatment for diabetes mellitus and a pr...

Comparison of trace elements in peripheral blood and bone marrow of newly diagnosed multiple myeloma patients
In this study, we aimed to evaluate alterations in trace elements in the blood and bone marrow serum of patients with newly diagnosed multiple myeloma (NMM). The levels of zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), magnesium (Mg), selenium (Se), arsenic (As), boron (B), nickel (Ni), silicon (Si) and chromium (Cr) were analyzed in the venous blood samples of the patient group comprising 70 patients with NMM (41 males and 29 females) and compared to those in the control group comprising 30 individuals (18 males and 12 females). In addition, trace element levels were analyzed in bone marrow samples from the patient gr...

Room ‐Temperature High‐Performance Photodetector and Phototransistor Based on PdSe2/ZnIn2S4 Alloy Heterojunctions
PdSe2/sulfur vacancies-ZnIn2S4 (Sv-ZIS) alloy heterojunction connected by chemical bonding is proposed for realizing efficient photogenerated carrier transfer. Thanks to the tight interfacial contact and enhanced light absorption of the heterojunction, the as-fabricated photodetectors exhibit excellent performance in terms of photocurrent, switching ratio, responsivity, and detectivity. Moreover, the transistor with gate voltage modulation capability amplifies the photocurrent to the milliampere level and increases the responsivity. AbstractVarious semiconductor devices have been developed based on 2D heterojunction materi...

Thyroid dysfunction due to trace element deficiency-not only selenium but also zinc
CONCLUSION: It is important to consider Se and Zn deficiencies when TSH and FT4 levels are elevated. It should also be noted that transient TSH elevation may be observed with Se supplementation.PMID:38625626 | DOI:10.1007/s42000-024-00550-1 (Source: Hormones)

Int J Syst Evol Microbiol. 2024 Apr;74(4). doi: 10.1099/ijsem.0.006334.ABSTRACTTwo Gram-stain-negative bacterial strains, R39T and R73T, were isolated from the rhizosphere soil of the selenium hyperaccumulator Cardamine hupingshanesis in China. Strain R39T transformed selenite into elemental and volatile selenium, whereas strain R73T transformed both selenate and selenite into elemental selenium. Phylogenetic and phylogenomic analyses indicated that strain R39T belonged to the genus Achromobacter, while strain R73T belonged to the genus Buttiauxella. Strain R39T (genome size, 6.68 Mb; G+C content, 61.6 mol%) showed the clo...

Constructing network structures to enhance stability and target deposition of selenium nanoparticles via amphiphilic sodium alginate and alkyl glycosides
In this study, sodium alginate (SA) and lysozyme (LZ) were reacted via the wet-heat Maillard reaction (MR) to obtain amphiphilic alginate-based polymers (SA-LZ). Alkyl glycosides (APG) were introduced into SA-LZ to enhance the deposition of SeNPs in leaves. Thus, a renewable and degradable polysaccharide-based material (SA-LZ/APG) loaded with Se formed an amphiphilic alginate-based-based shell with a Se core. Notably, the encapsulation of SeNPs into a polysaccharide base (SA-LZ/APG) increased the stabilization of SeNPs and resulted in orange-red, zero-valent, monoclinic and spherical SeNPs with a mean diameter of approxima...

Optimization of CO fermentation by Clostridium carboxidivorans in batch reactors: effects of the medium composition
CONCLUSIONS: The optimization of the medium composition in CO fermentation by Clostridium carboxidivorans is crucial for cost-effective solvent production. Tuning the yeast extract (YE) concentration, using pure cysteine as the reducing agent and reducing trace metal concentration contribute to reasonable solvent production within a relatively short fermentation period. Tungsten is essential for cell growth and solvent production, while selenium is not required.PMID:38614289 | DOI:10.1016/j.anaerobe.2024.102855 (Source: Anaerobe)
