Top pharmacy school or bottom tier DO school?
So I was recently accepted to both a top tier pharmacy school (ranked #1 in the nation) and a private DO school that isnt ranked. I was previously enrolled in another mid-tier MD school but was kicked out because of my poor academic performance. I was kind of surprised I got into a DO school, but my stats for the DO school was in the top 25% of their admitted applicants. The major thing is location. The DO school is located in a relatively rural area far from any major cities, while the... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Extracurriculars for Family Med with Step 1 P/F
Hello all. I know the typical advice is "just pass med school and you'll match FM" but I really don't want to just wing it. Sorry if this is a silly question but I'm not sure who else to ask Now that Step 1 is P/F, and it's looking like Step 2 could be by the time I take it, does that change an applicant's approach to matching Family Med? Do I need to publish papers or anything of that sort? I'm interested in rural primary care. Maybe an ER fellowship or OB, maybe Hospice and Palliative... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Non traditional decision
Hello everyone! New here. I am currently a full time IT Sys/Net admin for the past 11 years and a current PRN RN on a ICU step down progressive floor. I am also a licensed NREMT and FF/fire officer III with my township running medicals and 911 calls. I am certainly non-traditional, knowing I always wanted to be a practitioner of medicine as a child, and to help rural services and missions later in life. I was always told I was too incompetent by family, as I grew up in a mixed and foreign... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Retina: Solo Practice vs Group Practice
Looking for some additional guidance as July feels to be approaching faster than ever. Over the past few years, I've been very inspired by the two solo practice startup blogs, and I've gone back and forth debating the merits of each practice type (solo vs group). I was wondering if people on here could speak to some of the advantages and disadvantages of each, particularly with respect to retina and where it differs from comp or other subspecialities. First, my wife and I are from a rural... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

How much EM experience needed for rural FM?
Hello all. M1 here from the middle of nowhere interested in rural FM. Back home, if you call 911, most of the time, the only person staffing the hospital is either an RN or an FM hospitalist. I’m interested in FM, not EM, but, I’m considering pursuing lots of EM training and an EM fellowship so I could sort of be the doctor in that hospital and manage the inpatient and EM stuff. Threads like this one Board Certification for Family Physicians in Emergency Medicine make it seem like... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Dartmouth/Geisel vs University of Arizona (Phoenix)
Dartmouth/Geisel Pros Research Opportunities Impressive match list (Im not sure what specialty yet so this is nice for me) Access to professors and tight knit feel Ranked in top quartile of schools I like outdoors a lot so rural area is nice Everyone seemed super nice in my interview, and I got a positive feel from the place Cons Cost – 70k and I will likely not qualify for anything need based Hard to travel to. My family is all centered around the... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Procedure-heavy IM programs?
Lots of IM programs are moving away from procedures and I was hoping to get a list of areas where you still get exposed heavily during residency. Are there still academic programs where you get this exposure, or is it mostly rural/community programs with fewer resources and ancillary staff? I know this isn't a healthy way to think about it but I don't want to "waste" a strong app (AOA, top quintile, 99th percentile Step). Thanks! (Source: Student Doctor Network)

What is look like being an Anesthesia Attending in ObGyn hospital?
Hi SDN Anesthesiologists, I hope you are doing well. It has been a while, not that long to write here. I was a bit busy with bureaucracy of where the health directorate of this city would assign me to start my career as an Attending, and guess what (probably you read it and got it in the title), they finally assigned me to a maternity hospital in a district (urban - rural city) 30 miles away from where I live. Next week, I will have 72 hours shift (8 hours daily OR) and the rest in call for... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Most memorable resident interview stories
This is a spin-off of the "most common interview mistakes" thread. I'm wondering what are people's most memorable and/or notorious stories from their time interviewing. This is obviously directed at the program side, not the applicant side. Most memorable personal statement: Guy training in a relatively rural med school opens his PS with something to the effect of "everyday I wake up, look outside my window at the vast tracts of farm land and formulate a plan to get the hell out of here"... Pediatrics/FM Rank List Help
Delete if not allowed. More a general request for advice on making a rank list with some details on my specific situation. I have 14 interviews at this point and have only done 2 so far but I kind of wanted to start making a preliminary rank list in my head because I have a family and it's important for us to start planning. I like pediatrics a lot and do see myself as a pediatrician so that is what I mainly applied (applied to 20, interviewing at 12). On my rural family medicine 4th year... Gaining Clinical and Shadowing Experience
Hey Everyone, I’m curious to know how others have gained clinical and shadowing experiences with doctors. I live in a more rural area and all of the big providers around here don’t allow clinical/shadowing experience if you’re not associated with a program that requires it such as CNA, PA, maybe EMT. I haven’t been able to find many private practices and the ones I do find haven’t been returning my calls. I’m planning on branching out to nearby cities but most are 45 min to 1h30m. In... Scared about independent practice
I'm in a non-US program that trains GPs to do low risk anaesthesia. We are called GP anaesthetists. We only do 1 year of anaesthesia training after our GP residency and handle low risk ASA 1-2 in rural places. I'm halfway through my year but terrified at the thought of being independent. I've only ever gotten good feedback but everyday I'm terrified. I want to transfer into the 5-year anaesthesia stream but that requires 3 more years of additional training. People tell me that I will be fine... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Full-spectrum FM except for OB: residency interview question
Current M3 planning to target FM programs that train you to go rural and do it all. Except after finishing up my OB rotation I know I don’t want to do OB. When it comes time for residency interviews, should I just say that? It seems that many of the programs that give you good inpatient, procedural, and emergency med training also require a lot of OB. I wouldn’t want to put them off by saying I’m not interested in the OB part. Obviously I would still work hard and fulfill my duties so that... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Should i go to med school
From a country where med school is right after high school. Love the work a doctor does. Was a childhood dream. Love studying science. But looking at current state of medicine makes me reconsider. Young doctors I have talked to and went to med school bcz they LOVED medicine now regretting bcz of time strain, stress, low reimbursement, jobs available only in rural area. They really loved the study matter and their job but circumstance wise if they could turn back time would not do it again... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)
