Advice Needed! Medical vs Optometry School
Hello, I am a college junior who is still undecided on whether to pursue a career in medicine or optometry. I have done well in undergrad (4.0 GPA) and have good extracurriculars so I have good standings for medical school (as long as I do well on the MCAT). The reason I consider optometry so heavily is because my father is an optometrist, who has owned a practice in a rural community for 20+ plus years, and financially, he does very well for an optometrist. If I go into optometry, I will... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Is it too late to apply for the NHSC?
I am starting medical school in July and was wondering if it is too late to apply for the NHSC. I am going to an expensive private DO school in San Antonio (UIWSOM) and am interested in rural primary care so, I think the NHSC may be a good fit. I missed the May 11th deadline so, can I apply as an OMS 2? Also, I am interested to see how the program works: - Do you have flexibility on where you work? I would be interested in working in rural Texas. - Is the pay a lot less considering... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Job Search - Questions
I know, I know...Job market is terrible. This year's residents barely got hired in rural wherever. But I've noticed a lot more posts about job offers online and recruiters messaging me that it seems like things are starting to get a bit better. I've been trying for the past year to move to a specific area and have been in touch with either docs or recruiters at the jobs I'm looking at. Problem is, I don't live there or see them regularly so I'm at a disadvantage. The only power I've got is... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Reimbursement tied to gross total collections
Question for you all. I have been offered a position at a small facility in a more rural location where I would be reimbursed a percentage of gross total collections. A. What percentage would be considered fair? B. Any estimates on what a ballpark figure of annual gross total collections would be at a freestanding center averaging 20 on treat? C. What’s the downside to this form of reimbursement? Any responses would be MUCH appreciated. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

NHSC chances for non-disadvantaged applicant (2021-2022 cycle)?
Hi all! I have just submitted my NHSC application this week. I am not disadvantaged by the definition of the NHSC. I spent about half a decade of my life in a rural village abroad with family, a few months at a time. That certainly was an underserved/rural area. I did not even mention this in my essays because I could not find an organic opportunity to bring it in (that may have been a mistake). I did not want to claim a disadvantage I did not deserve. I am appreciative of... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Why is there such a need for food animal vets?
It seems many schools are doing things to incentivize students to try and go into food animal medicine, some schools will even give you financial aid if you go into food animal med and then committing a few years to a rural area to practice. Is the shortage that huge? I'm just so curious why so few students want to go into that part of vet med! (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Am I obligated to take call on nursing home patients?
I am actually an internist but in a rural area. Just curious because the local nursing home seems to think they can just call me 24/7 about patients I’ve seen in the clinic and expect me to write these long-ass nursing orders for them. Pretty sure this was not in my contract and is actually the job of the nursing home medical director. Am I wrong about this? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Applying to EM now
Hey all I'm a rising MS4 who was formerly all-in for EM until the recent oversaturation woes. Would it be best to apply only to top rated EM programs at this point in order to minimize the odds of being unemployed upon residency completion? Even if I am able to secure a job, I'm not mentally prepared to live in a place like rural Montana (not that there's anything wrong with living there, but it's just somewhere that I personally wouldn't be happy). I have been contemplating switching to... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Diversity Essay Brainstorm: Which is best?
1. Drove across the country and moved to California alone when I was 20 and lived in a camper for a while. I worked at a well-known winery first, and then a famous brewery. Worked various manual labor jobs to stay afloat. Saved enough money until I could rent an apartment (had parental/familial support as well so not really that amazing). I did become super independent though and learned a lot from being culturally uprooted. 2. Grew up in a small rural town in Upstate NY surrounded by... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)
