Merits of away rotations for FM vs electives that you wouldn't normally be able to do
I am trying to decide if it is more beneficial for me to try and do a couple away rotations for FM at potential programs I might like, vs rotations that would be very helpful for future FM practice such as ortho clinic, sports med, radiology, derm, ICU. I have good stats for FM, so an away for me would be more to try and get to know a certain program better. I have read on these forums though that rotations such as derm, rads, rural FM, clinic ortho, and ICU are really nice to help for FM... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Michigan State CHM vs. BU vs. CWRU
Context: First gen college student from a rural area, graduated from large public research institution, looking for a school that will allow me to continue with research while being integrated in/working in underserved communities. Have some debt from undergrad, but I want to set myself up for success later, whether that means matching to a great residency or not being in debt for 500 years. Really struggling to make a decision, especially when no one has been able to visit schools/do a vibe... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

What are your thoughts on these incomes?
In this video, the dentist talks about earning about $200,000 as a dental associate! He says that isn’t too far from reach and that he himself earned $300,000 as an associate in a rural area. Even with an indeed search I see promised ranges from $160,000-390,000 in a lot of these corporate offices. So why is it that people say being an associate = no money? I feel as though $200,000 is quite a bit of money.. even $150,000! And considering a situation where... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Racist interaction with lab tech
Hey guys, so I'm looking for some advice about a recent incident. So I'm a Chinese American student (important for story) who is currently on a rotation in a rural area, and we have to spend some time in the ER on call. I was introduced to this (white) lab tech who was also working that night, and she asked me what nationality I was, and when I said I was Chinese, she said (actual quote) "Oh I hate you, my mom has COVID". Quite frankly, I was extremely shocked by her comment and had no idea... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Hospitalist Liability at Rural Hospitals
With the current corona situation I am at a rural hospital and the main hospital affiliated with my ship as well as surrounding hospitals cannot accept transfers of sick patients or those needing sub speciality support. I am being asked to accept these patients as “er” boarders. I.E. treat them as floor patients in the ED pending an available bed which can be days. Is this the norm or can you point me to resources on the Medico legal side of this situation ? Additionally , if I reject these... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

ATSU-KCOM vs KCU vs COMP-NW
ATSU-KCOM Pros Old school with large alumni network Good facilities with anatomy lab, simulation center, student gym, etc Rural (I personally like rural areas) Facilitates audition rotations Cons Missouri. It's a long ways away from me. Having to move for years 3-4 or travel longer distances for rotations KCU-Joplin Pros Pretty similar to ATSU-KCOM. Old school, good facilities Still rural-ish (personal preference), but... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Help choosing jobs
I am doing a cardiac fellowship and debating between these two jobs. Wondering if people can chime in what they think. 1. Midwest rural small town. Small private practice group. Salary around 700K +/- 50k (looked into the books, appear legit and stable). Vacation 3 weeks (this must be the catch?). Weekly hours around 50/week. Call frequency is 10 weekends and about 45 weekdays based on # of providers. ACT model. barebone benefits. 2. Midwest rural small town. Medium size private practice... What made you choose optometry?
Hi all, I hope you all are well. So I recently started working at a rural-ish Private Optometry Practice as a Tech and while I enjoy the work it can be quite stressful at times due to the volume of patients we receive and what I need to to do for each patient. The Optometrists have really taken me under their wing so-to-speak because I'm the only one in the practice who is looking Optometry school. I am starting to have a few doubts, however. So I will be completely honest, I started out... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Trends in EM compensation (med students read this)
For those who want an honest behind scene look on what is going on in EM compensation...we have the perfect storm brewing for trouble. Consider the following PRE-COVID developments: 1) The job market nationally has consolidated over the past 20 years. The majority of clinical EM physicians now work for CMG's. Nothing new 2) HCA and other private hospitals are now starting their own, self-funded residency programs. Many are in rural areas/small hospitals, in hospitals you would not expect to... Picking a rotation site?
For those who choose where to do 3rd year rotations, would y'all do a rural site or urban? What are pros and cons of either? I am leaning away from urban as I've heard there are more opportunities for hands on stuff in rural locations. What looks better for residency as well? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Moonlighting in residency
Going into rads. Would really like to moonlight during residency, but there aren't that many residencies with great opportunities. There are hardly any internal options at my home program. How do people go about finding moonlighting opportunities? I'm talking like rural ED shifts, occupational health stuff, etc. Would really like to make more $$ to pay down my loans, and a DR residency is pretty conducive to that. Degree of Medical Management?
Hi all, I am considering Optometry currently and have a few questions for current providers. My main question revolves around the extent of Medical Management conducted by Optometrists today. I know the scope of practice in many states has been expanding in recent years to allow more and more autonomy and practice avenues, however, what extent of a typical day (corporate or private practice) do you spend doing medical management of eye diseases or eye injury? Do rural areas see a higher... Degree of Medical Management? (Source: Student Doctor Network)
