This could get interesting …. (Legislation to make Anesthesiologists eligible for “Rural Pass-Through” money)
https://www.asahq.org/about-asa/newsroom/news-releases/2023/08/asa-applauds-introduction-of-medicare-access-to-rural-anesthesiology-act It’ll be interesting to see if this passes, if the AANA fights it, and what opportunities it opens up. As many of you know, the way the law currently stands, it essentially “incentivizes” rural hospitals to use CRNA’s rather than Docs. Thoughts?? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

How to increase inpatient census
Hey everyone, I am applying to an inpatient job at a small community hospital in a rural area. One of the areas that they are struggling with currently is keeping their beds full. They don't have a physiatrist currently, the CMO is acting as the medical director. The CEO asked me how I would work to increase the census. I wasn't really sure how to answer that question. They have a max capacity of 17, currently averaging around 8 -10. Has anyone else built up their census, if so how... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Primary care loan forgiveness
Hi all, I've heard that there are programs or incentives that will pay for a portion of medical school if you pledge to go into primary care in a rural area. I have done a little looking and can't seem to find specifics on this. Does anyone have a pulse on these types of programs and if so could you link them? I'm assuming there is a strict criteria that is laid out to qualify for "rural" that would be posted with said program but you never know so does anyone know what would qualify for... Adjuvant clobazam
Dear colleagues, I am not a neurologist but I just wanted to learn something. I was doing a locum shift at a small rural hospital when somebody presented with a first episode self-limiting focal aware seizure after GBM resection + chemoradiotherapy several months ago. CTB showed stable findings c/f one a month ago. I loaded with Keppra 1.5g PO. I was going to send them home on Keppra 750mg BD with outpatient follow-up. Neurologist was happy but also wanted a few days of 10mg BD clobazam... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

UCSF SJV Prime Program?
I'm a CA resident with a definite interest/passion for rural primary care. I'm completing the UCSF Secondary, and it lists these options for programs. The SJV Prime seems like the right fit, but does anyone have any personal info or experience with the program? Thanks in advance! (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Interested?
Hi! I’m not a dentist, but instead a practice manager for a federally qualified health center that operates two primary care clinics, and one dental clinic. We took possession of the dental clinic which was formerly a free clinic a little more than a year ago. We are struggling to recruit dentists to this area and I am looking for some help or advice. We are in a very rural area, with a patient population that really needs dental services. I feel as though, for our area, our pay and benefits... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Wamc? 3.60, 515
Hi there, I'm a traditional student straight out of undergrad. Not necessarily chasing prestige, really just wanting to get in somewhere close enough to regularly see my family. I grew up in a rural community and am very interested in doing rural practice one day, so I hit that note pretty hard in my essays and am applying to mostly schools which emphasize rural medicine. I'm also quite interested in psychiatry - while I know I could certainly change my mind at some point, psych has always... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Why is the pay for retail pharmacists in rural California so high?
According to posts here I've heard that the pay for retail pharmacists in rural California can easily be 155-165K. With overtime apparently people can make 200k if they hustle. If that's the case then why do people still complain that "pharmacy degree is not worth it"? Everybody should just move to California and make good money there. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

WAMC: 4th time applicant
Hi all. 4th time applicant and desperate to get in. From Indiana, considering Purdue only (not looking to expand the list for personal reasons). Last cycle I was waitlisted at Purdue with only ~350 vet hours and similar animal experience hours. My GPA will increase slightly when I submit my application; what is shown is as of spring 2023 (I am taking summer classes right now). Interested in small animal, specifically working in a rural area. Graduating GPA (undergrad): 3.75... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Clinical Volunteering Abroad: Voluntourism?
Hey everyone. As a part of a school fellowship, for almost three months, I got a chance to work abroad with a locally led grassroots NGO that works with local experts on their rural community health and development projects. I had the opportunity to assist on some of the organization’s projects (such as sanitation presentations and health trainings in local schools), and I also had a chance to work for a rural health clinic in partnership with the NGO and worked at patient intake by taking...
