"Any other comments" essays
I am considering using this space to explain why some of my coursework has been taken at CCs and online. The only college that accepted post-bacc students within two hour's drive was a local college with a limited course list because I lived in a rural area and they focus on trades. I took most of my lower level science classes here in person, but unfortunately was forced to take Physics 2 online because the main physics professor quit and moved to another university like a week before the... New attending advice thread
I've been on these forums since I was a junior in undergrad. Tomorrow I start my first day as an attending fresh out of residency and it's kinda surreal. I will be rural hospital employed, only podiatrist for about 60 miles or so in all directions. Any advice or words of wisdom are greatly appreciated. I know I am well trained, confident, and have a lot of tools in my toolbox to help my patients. However, I still can't help but feel nervous for this new start. Thank you all for your help and... MPH vs DIY Post Bacc?
I've recently been accepted to a 2 yr MPH program and have been battling on whether I should do it or not. Some background: graduated in 2022, cgpa 3.39 sgpa 3.1 (major upward trend), urm, 495 mcat. Planning to retake the mcat in january. I think I would love to do the MPH program since I am very passionate about rural health but I know this is not going to make up for my low stats. I live near a university and I was thinking about taking some high level science courses to boost my gpa. Do I... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Job prospects for rural general surgery?
As I consider my future career prospects, I am very interested in general surgery. There are certain scholarships available for med students who agree to later practice in rural communities, which I am very open to, but I would like to learn more about the job prospects for general surgery in rural areas. Is it difficult to find a position in one's community of choice (obviously this may depend on the state)? How do salaries and work-life balance, or lack thereof, compare? Wife probably going to make a C in post bacc. Don't know what to do.
I've posted several times over the last few years seeking advice for my wife. We've followed it closely, and she has been crushing it...until today. It feels like it's all crashing down, and I don't know what to do now. She finished her undergrad with 2.5 sGPA. She was in a tough living environment, had long commutes from her rural home, 3 jobs, 1st gen of a Mexican immigrant, etc. She made Ds in 4 classes: both Ochems, physiology, and Calc. Last summer she started her post bacc by... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Can you please comment on a fair (not amazing, not terrible) salary would be for an MD anesthesiologist in rural Rocky mountains (2.2hrs from Denver) would be? If anyone has recent MGMA numbers, that would also be very helpful. Thank you (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Notes/Wisdom for P1 and P4 classes
Just thought I would throw this in here after having a chat with my staff rph today... some advice for P1s and P4s should they come by.... P1--get out if you want to do retail, its not worth it if you are at P1. get out if you do not have a growth mindset that can rake you in 200k salary pretty quickly after graduation (industry, california, director,DM) P4--you are desperately needed in the workforce for many rural areas, retail and hospital. The pay you can negotiate has never been better... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

research and rural medicine?
Hi SDN! Applying to multiple rural track programs for med school right now and had a few quick questions--are there any opportunities to combine research with a career in rural medicine? I grew up & went to college in rural areas, so I'd really love to have a future career where I can address disparities in rural healthcare. However, a big part of my resume is research-centered (using AI/telehealth/big data to improve care for underserved communities)--I don't know if I should de-emphasize...
