Lacking community service for nontraditional veteran with clinical experience.
Hello all, I've just wrapped up my post-bacc program and am wrapping up my MCAT prep. I've been filling out my application during my downtime and noticed my non-paid, volunteer/community service is lacking. As a quick background: Area of Residence: Rural Undergrad: Top public school // 3.67 GPA non-medical related. Post-Bac program: 3.77 GPA No MCAT as of yet. Job #1: Army // Non-medical related job, ended up being medically retired due to some gnarly injuries... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Transfer Residency, Same Specialty
Hi everyone, I’m a current PGY-1 in FM thinking about transferring residency programs. USMD, Step 1 21X, Step 2 23X. Currently at an unopposed rural program that I ranked #2. I really liked the program because it had great exposure to OB while also being a 3 hour drive from where my parents live. When I started out, I thought that I wanted to do an OB/Womens Health fellowship. Turns out, I really only liked OB during my medical school rotation lol. More importantly, my interests have... WAMC with poor ECs? 522, 3.79 cGPA, 3.79 sGPA, nontrad
Short version of my story: Went to university 10 years ago at 15 years old. Did not take it very seriously and had no specific career plan. Decided at 20 (in 2018) I wanted to be a medical doctor. Took a semester of prereqs, then was out of school for a couple years due to life circumstances. Finished prereqs in Spring 2022. Searched high and low for clinical opportunities starting in fall 2021 but was not able to find any (lots of programs shut down in my rural area due to COVID) until... Can rural interest open doors at OOS unfriendly schools?
Hello all, As the title implies, I have a very great passion for rural healthcare. It’s my main reason for going into medicine, I have a hard time seeing myself practicing in anything other than a rural or rural accessible setting. Growing up in Appalachia in a rural area that was still within reach of the suburbs, I’m very well versed in this healthcare disparity and just how drastic it is and how just one or a few physicians can make a huge difference. I am doing volunteering activities... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Creighton v. Loma Linda/Kettering
All right we pulled OUWB off the list and I am left with these 2 (have to make a decision by May 1!!!) Thank you so much for your help in advance!! Creighton (Omaha) Pros: - Mission fit could not be better - Lots of global health opportunities - Collaborative community - Love the Omaha area - Clinical rotations are at a good hospital system - Faculty and administrative staff are very approachable and accessible - Faith based, I want this embodied into my education - Rural health... Should I ask this person for a letter of rec?
Hello, I'm working on getting my LORs together. One issue that's been on my mind is that I don't have a letter from any MDs - I've done plenty of shadowing, but mostly at academic centers where I got paired with a different physician (usually a resident) every time. However, there's one other potential MD letter that I've thought about asking for, but am not sure how it would work. This person is a mentor to me and has been very impactful in my life. He is a rural primary care physician... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

LMU vs. Midwestern
Hi all! I have recently been accepted to both Midwestern and Lincoln memorial and I am having a very hard time deciding between the two. LMU is much closer to home and a lot cheaper however the location seems very rural which is something I am not use to. Finding appropriate housing for LMU seems to be a struggle but another pro is I can bring a pet if I go to LMU. Midwestern is so far away from home which terrifies me and I think bringing a pet would be too much of a struggle with the plane... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

VCOM-LA vs NSU-KPCOM (Davie)
Hello I need help deciding between these two school. I am originally from TX and would ideally like to move back there after med school. VCOM-Lousiana Pros Closer to Home (5hr drive) Cheaper Tuition and COL (51K tuition) 99.7% Match Rate for other sister campus locations Cons Mandatory attendance Not the best location, very rural and a bit boring Only 2 years old, has not graduated a class yet Not much opportunity for research Exams 2-3x a week ... City population needed to sustain a psychiatrist
This is surprisingly something that I haven't found much information on when I've searched. What do you think would be the average population of a city required to sustain a FT clinic based psychiatrist opening up a private practice? I ideally plan to live in the rural western states (idaho, montana, oregon, washington). By rural I mean towns with less than 100,000 population. Do you think this would be feasible to do without having to do a mix of clinic + telepsych? Thank you. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Advice: Counseling Psychology PhD or Clinical Psychology PsyD
Hi folks, so I'm currently in a predicament and could use some input and perspective. I am currently deciding between a clinical psychology PsyD (Wright State University) and a counseling psychology PhD (University of Iowa). I have been offered admission to both programs (both APA accredited, both have consistent 90%+ accredited match rates over the past 5+ years). My goal long term is to work with underserved populations (particularly military and rural), likely in a VA setting, with a... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

NSU-KPCOM vs ATSU-KCOM
ATSU-KCOM: I would be in a very small rural city in Missouri for 2 years and then go back home for rotations. Or I could go to NSU-KPCOM, not sure if I can come home for rotations except for electives. I know ATSU is extremely established & I do like their curriculum better but I need opinions please bc I hear that Novas board rates have declined & they have lost affiliation with big hospitals. Rural track
Hello, I am wondering how does being part of the rural track may affect one's fellowship chances or career prospects, if at all? Is it common for the curriculum to be different even for the first two years? A program I know has the rural track residents take 4 months of FM as opposed to 2 months of IM + 2 months of FM. With this point, I suppose I am worried about getting my residency training recognized in a foreign country (where I MIGHT move to 10-20 years from now). Any other... University of Western Australia DPM Program
Posting this in the pre-pod forum just because it pertains to podiatric education and undergraduate preparation. In today's PM News, there's a mini-feature about an Australian podiatrist starting a rural podiatry clinic. Mildly impressive, plus she looks young so it's a fairly big deal at this stage in her career to be heading up her own clinic. So I went down the rabbit hole, checked her linkedin which appears to be outdated. She got her degree from University of Western... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Contract change
Maybe someone can help me out here. So I’ve been at my job for 4.5 years. I work at a small hospital in a small rural town in Iowa. This is my first job out of residency, so still wet behind the ears when it comes to contracts and compensation. So during CoVid our competitor bought the hospital where I work and combined the two campuses to form a “Sole Hospital“ in doing so they switched to a completely different compensation model than when I started. We are going from a base salary plus... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)
