Help Me Decide: Drexel vs Brody (ECU)
Brody School of Medicine Pros Tuition (in-state) + scholarship Cheap cost of living; students live within walking distance to campus and the hospital Class size (~85) - feel the students here are all friends with each other Vidant Medical Center is largest hospital in Eastern NC; I believe all core clerkships are here Cons Very few subspecialties for rotations - would have to travel to others Location - small town, rural NC Drexel Pros ... WAMC 3.3 cGPA/ 3.6 sGPA 508 MCAT
3.3 cGPA 3.6 sGPA The grades that brought down my GPA were made during my first 11/2 of college when I was 16-17. Since then, I have only had A's and B's. I am applying as a disadvantaged student from a small rural town in Missouri. I am applying as disadvantaged because I have had extenuating circumstances that prevented me from giving my full attention to academics. Long story short, I grew up in an underemployed, single parent household, I was then left at a poor family member's house... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Reapply or Caribbean?
Hey everyone, Thanks for any advice presented in response to my question. Background: First generation college student from a medically underserved and rural area and a disadvantaged family. Non-traditional 28 year old male, married with two kids born during undergrad between 2019-2021. (Yes, I had a COVID baby). Started college in high school in 2010 and did poorly early on before quitting until 2018. Did really well in undergrad until the semester after my 1st kid was born when I... School List Help (MD/DO ~3.5 cGPA, 513 MCAT)
Hello! I'm hoping to get some advice on a school list, especially for DO schools! I'm a VA resident and re-applicant (I was waitlisted at 3 MD schools 2 cycles ago but didn't get off the waitlists). I have some ties to rural medicine, but they aren't very strong so I'm likely not a good fit for schools with a rural medicine focus. Please avoid quoting this post. Stats 3.48 cGPA AMCAS sGPA: 3.37 AACOMAS sGPA: 3.53 Upward trend and expecting a 4.0 for a DIY post-bac (finishing in May... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Applying for 2023 Fellowship
Hello, I am planning to apply this year for pul/CC fellowship. I have my work permit now and I am waiting for my greencard (should get it before July 2023). I have been a hospitalist for 4 years now. I don't really have much connection. I work in a rural area because I was J1 visa candidate before. My USLME score are average but I do have great LORs. I have about 15 publications (mostly case reports - nothing really special). What are my chances? I am thinking of applying to ~100 places... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

How do I get a residency in a desirable location?
Current M2 about to start clinical rotations. I'm at a campus in a rural location but my school has affiliated hospitals throughout the state. How can I set myself up so that I can have the best chances at matching in a city (preferably east coast)? Currently interested in IM, OBGYN, EM. I don't have any connections so getting away rotations or even getting my foot in the door seems impossible. Any advice would be gladly appreciated? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Realistically, can I have a reasonable lifestyle?
I am a medical student and OB/GYN has always been a big passion of mine. Being a husband and father has given me a unique perspective. I know that my family is my first priority and I actually see that as a strength professionally rather than a weakness. If my life at home is happy, ill be a better doctor. Lately I’ve considered FM which I still think would make me happy. I plan on practicing in a relatively rural area of the country where FMs are still delivering. i wouldn’t rule out an OB... How do rural pathologists make so much?
Currently working at a 15-person group in the mid-Atlantic ~31,000 cases per year. Making ~$250k total compensation as an employee. I have worked consistent 11-hour days since the start of the year. I consider myself very efficient and don't get distracted easily. After catching up with someone I trained with recently, they mentioned they made $550k, last year. They currently work in a rural part of North Carolina doing general surg sign out. Their workload is similar to my own, yet they... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

This happened a year and half ago, Ever since I have been trying to get back into residency (IM and FM) as a PGY-1 or random postings for PGY-2/3 positions. I have had no luck. Im in the process of trying to get licensed in Texas, not sure where that’s gonna lead. But was wondering if someone has any ideas as to how to get out of this. Went to a rural DO school. failed level 1 and 2 first attempt. Passed level 3 on... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

I have compiled a list of cons with being a dentist … let me know if any of these are inaccurate or not common enough
Lets start with the general state of the profession: The field is getting saturated and will require you to move to a more rural setting to find a job that pays more than $120K. Insurance reimbursements are cut year-after-year, making you have to work harder to collect compensation over time. The high amount of dental students graduating every year increases competition — this drives down compensation, and allows insurances to continue getting away with compensating less... Getting University Counseling Center jobs with MA level licensure
I am wondering if anyone knows of a good path to take in order to get a job at a university counseling center as an MA level clinician. Very few jobs I have seen allow for anyone pre-licensed, yet they all want university counseling center experience... I see a pre-licensure job/program at Costa Mesa community college district in CA, and a job or two in some rural areas of upper midwest states that will take someone on pre-licensure, but I'm hoping I'm just missing something here because... How Important is "Scholarly Concentration"?
I see that a lot of schools offer "scholarly concentration programs" such as urban med, rural med, public health, etc. When it comes to residency applications and beyond, is this something that anyone will care about? Could it hurt you if you decide on a specialty that's outside of that concentration? For example if you apply to a "non-rural" residency, say neurosurgery, will having attended a rural health concentration be a red flag/mark against you? Thanks! (Source: Student Doctor Network)
