ATSU-KCOM vs UNE vs DMU
Anyone's thoughts on ATSU-KCOM vs UNECOM? I have been accepted for both and am trying to decide between the two. I initially thought ATSU based on its history and the fact that I come from a small town (rural doesn't bother me). However, after looking at the numbers, I saw how high UNE is on the "ranking list." They are both far from home (UNE is 16 hr and ATSU is 8 hr). I am also waitlisted at 2 in state MD schools and am waiting for a response after interviewing at DMU. So feel free to... What procedures could a GS realistically do after 5 years of training?
PGY-1 more than halfway through intern year. We get into the OR quite a bit at my program even at the junior level. At this time in my very early career, I think I am going to purse community / somewhat rural general surgery practice. I really would like to work outside strictly the abdomen as a general surgeon. My question is how feasible, REALISTIC and safe is this with 5 years of general surgery training? Head and Neck / Endocrine: Thyroids. Parathyroids? Anything else fair game in this... Secondary Polycythemia
New attending here. Hoping to get some advice from those of you practicing for a while. I just started a job in a somewhat rural setting. I get a lot of Heme referrals from PCPs, pulmonologists, etc for patients for polycythemia. These are almost always known tobacco abuse cases, COPD, etc. We were always taught in training to treat the underlying cause, but the referring docs and patients expect to be treated with therapeutic phlebotomy. Some of them have had this issue for years and... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

WVSOM vs NSU-KPCOM vs PCOM GA
I have admissions from above three schools. Thanks for any thoughts and advice. here are few of the points I have so far: WVSOM: Great interview vibes. Dean and student body seem very supportive. Good rotations within WV. Good established and state school. Residency placement is good but not sure if they have any advantage over others. Board Qs used for internal exams as well. Primary con is rural area and all rotation sites are in WV. 4 hours from any major metro area like Pittsburgh... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Is it Worth it to do a Second Residency in Psychiatry?
Good day. I'm currently a second year internal medicine resident. I applied twice to psychiatry in the past without success and went into IM which was my backup field. I am very unhappy in IM and I'm trying to gauge whether it is worth it to consider applying again to psychiatry. I live in a rural area and know that I could try to find fulfillment offering whatever mental healthcare I can as an outpatient PCP. However, I am really interested in working in inpatient psychiatry and there are... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Female Large Animal Vets- safety in regards to clients
Hello! I’m interested in maybe going into large animal medicine, and I was wondering what safety for women vets was like in regards to safety against clients. There have been several instances of clients attacking(physically and verbally)/ threatening vets in a traditional clinic setting, and I am just worried about what could happen if a vet is alone in a rural area, especially for a late night farm call. Is this a reasonable worry? What have you all experienced? Thank you! (Source: Student Doctor Network)

CUSOM VS KCU COM (KC Campus)
Hello All! I have luckily been accepted to a few programs and am deciding between these two. Please let me know what you all think! CUSOM: Pros: 2.5 hours away from me, GME, Awesome student run clinic, ample research opportunities, great match/residency placement Cons: Graded/ Not pass fail, Monday exams, Rural setting KCU-COM: Pros: Very well established, Good match/residency placement, P/F, Urban setting, GME Cons: 14hrs away, I believe CUSOM has a better match/residency placement (Source: Student Doctor Network)

HPSP/NHSC--is it worth it for me?
I'm sure this question gets posted a million times so my apologies in advance for starting a 1000th thread on it. Basically unless I get off the waitlist for my in-state school, I'll be attending UAB as an OOS student (~$107,000/yr total cost). I'm potentially interested in specializing someday but not until after a couple years of normal practice after dental school. I grew up in a rural area and would not be opposed to living in a place like that again unless it was some god-awful place... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Mgma 2023
Hey Guys, i am in the process of interviewing for 2025 GI job. I was wondering if anybody had the latest MGMA data about median/75th percentile wRVU and and the median/75th percentile compensation. I am located in the Midwest. I am being offered 57wrvu for 8200 of work in small community hospital in a rural area and i know that this rate is being offered by university/academic places . I just don't want to be taken for a ride here. When i told them that this was a low rate , they said that... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Performance improvement plan, may get fired? Advice.
Am IM hospitalist rural midwest. Have not been at my job very long but have been having constant issues with nurses, APPs, to the point that two nurses were recently fired and I was placed on a performance improvement plan (PIP). The goals seem reasonable, but doing some research it seems as though a PIP is the first step toward being fired, so I want to know if anyone has experience in having a PIP, if this means I am for certain going to get fired or if I can come back from this, and... UVM Larner vs Dartmouth (Geisel)
Hello everyone, I wanted to post this thread to ask people about perceptions of these two schools and which they think might be the better fit for me in particular. What I value most about the programs is not ranking, prestige, etc, but student well-being, as well as location. For full transparency, I am from the South, and don't like the city life. I have lived rural before and prefer the community around rural environments, and college towns are my favorite (like Iowa City, or Burlington... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Transferring Schools for More Clinical Opportunities
Hi! I'm currently a first-year at my undergrad. I'm considering applying to transfer for the Fall of 2024 (my sophomore year). One of the main reasons is for more clinical opportunities. I currently go to a liberal arts institution in a rural environment and the nearest hospital doesn't do more than 8 hours of shadowing or volunteering. If I were to shadow or get any clinical experience, I would have to drive around an hour to a bigger city. EMS is not an option in the area and basically... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Is working at a community health center worth it when graduating with ~300k in debt
Hello, I'm an M2 and am interested in either peds or FM and I would prefer to work for the uninsured in suburban or rural community clinic setting, but I do not know anything about how financial compensation works as a doc and if that would be a viable option financially if I'm graduating with at least 300k in debt. I know NHSC is an option for paying off loans but I've heard that it is pretty particular and stringent when it comes to who qualifies and its requirements. I also don't know if...
