Match ortho from community program?
I am a rising M1 at a small, community school that is focused on getting their students into rural FM residencies. How can I maximize my chances of marching into orthopedics. We don’t have a home ortho program and only had 5 ortho matches in the past match cycle. I’m doing ortho research and had a poster at a national conference and have 2 publications in the works (2nd author & 3rd author) but what are other ways that I can maximize my chances? Obviously step 1 isn’t an option for me... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Insight on whether applying to FSU COM is a donation?
I am a Florida resident with a 519 MCAT(130/128/131/130). I am also of the understanding that FSU is heavily mission oriented and is looking for students to practice in the rural/underserved areas of Florida. While I may be able to write in such a way that connects some of my activities to an interest in the underserved, it may be a bit of a stretch. Additionally, based on MSAR data, the 90th percentile for accepted students' MCAT is 514, which to me indicates they are accepting very very... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Another Rural hospital down...
This rural California county lost its only hospital, leaving residents with dire healthcare choices After the financial collapse of Madera County's only general hospital, residents are left with slim options for care. Improving clinic check in and other logistics....
Our clinic is fairly rural and is still registering patients with pen, paper and then manually entering it into our EMR. Of course this means the patients sit in the lobby for 45 minutes trying to figure out what meds they are taking and what their insurance is. We've started mailing out the registration forms before the consult, but of course that doesn't work if they are being seen on short notice; and half the time they wouldn't do it anyway. For those of you that are involved in the... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Rural Focused MD Schools
Hi all, I have extensive experience with providing rural healthcare and education, and I'm looking at applying to medical schools that have a focus on rural medicine. I'm aware that a lot of DO schools are rurally focused and I plan on applying to several, as well as taking advantage of the linkage to one through my SMP. However, I'm also wanting to apply to some MD schools and have had some trouble finding sources on which ones have an emphasis on rural medicine? I've heard UNR and Mercer... Student Loans
OMS3 about to move into OMS4 and thinking about student loans. When I graduate I will have a maximum of 280K (haven't accepted my final loan yet) and a minimum of 230K. There is a state scholarship program I am interested in that offers 200K tax free that recipients can use as the wish in exchange for service in a rural area in primary care; IM/FM/peds for 4-6 years. Length of time is determined by the shortage in the area. So the more rural you go the less time you owe back. The idea of... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)
