( Hello, new private practice owner here. Was previously working at a rural health system, with an extremely busy practice. Hospital continued to not adequately staff or support what staff remained post covid and the writing was on the wall it was going downhill quickly. I then left in favor of starting private practice, riding out non compete now. I just got a document from a lawyer regarding a patient I treated at prior hospital, currently not a patient at my new LLC. In short... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Locums?
I'm going to be graduating fellowship next year and I'm interviewing at jobs currently. I'm single in my early 30s and have lived in rural areas before and am perfectly willing to move often. From what I'm seeing on the locums market now it seems the demand for oncologists is red hot, seeing offers between $3,000-5,000/d depending on the need of the locations. What I'd like to know is if I did locums out of fellowship would this be a red flag for future practices if I eventually wanted to... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Minnesota pharmacist on trial for refusing to dispense plan B
Sorta suprised this case hasn't been posted here. She had to travel 100 miles to finally be able to obtain the medication. I hope they throw the book at him (and others who refused her) - this is why we need laws to protect patients - not everybody lives in a place where there are a dozen pharmacies within a few miles, and in these rural areas are we were are much more likely to run into people like this... WAMC - 518, 4.0, rural state resident
May have tweaked a couple details for privacy, but the general idea is still the same. I do know that I have decent stats, but looking at MSAR, the greatest hurdle for me is that MOST competitive schools don't accept students from the Idaho/Wyoming/Dakotas region. So WAMC please? cGPA: 4.0 – sGPA: 4.0 MCAT: 518 (130/127/131/130) State of residence: Wyoming Ethnicity and/or race: ORM Undergrad institution: state school, microbiology Clinical experience... Research year for psych
Hey all. I am a US MD student in my 4th year. All pass for my clinical rotations. No research. Was on executive board for a medical school club. Haven't taken Step 2 yet. Red flags: Pass on Peds Sub-I. I am looking to match psychiatry; I'd be happy at a community psych program in rural Nebraska. Would a research year allow me to demonstrate interest in psychiatry and improve my chances of matching psych? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

So practicing medicine in rural areas pays better, but what is "rural" ?
Are smaller / mid-size towns in the Midwest considered rural ? Cedar Rapids, Sioux Falls, Dayton, Green Bay, Fargo, Springfield Mo, Springfield IL, Lansing, Evansville, Rockford IL for example ? Or places in the South like Little Rock, Huntsville AL, Savannah, Athens GA, Jackson MS, Wilmington NC, Charleston SC, Chattanooga, Amarillo, for example ? Or when we talk about "rural" in the sense of higher compensation, are we taking about truly rural ? Dozens of miles between towns... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

UIC (Peoria) vs. SIU
Hello everyone! I'm currently deciding between these two schools and could use your help. I'm a Chicago native that attended undergrad in rural Indiana. UIC (Peoria) Pros - Higher ranked - Numerous hospitals in Peoria for clinical experience - Connections with larger UIC system - Block curriculum Cons - Fewer on-site resources and programs (smaller campus compared to Chicago) - Non-nbme exams - More expensive housing - Higher cost of attendance (~$80,300) SIU... URM (latina) 514/3.6 - does this list of schools look good?
Hi! I am a recent grad and submitted AMCAS last week, but am wondering which med schools I should add/remove from my current list? I am Latina and Indian and I am a Spanish speaker. I am also a WA state resident. Thank you! Clinical: I have 400 hours as a patient coordinator for Latinx communities, 150 hours of volunteering at a rural urgent care clinic, and 100 hours of shadowing (ED, gastroenterology, surgery, OB/GYN, primary care).
