Longitudinal association of handgrip strength with all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in older adults using a causal framework
Exp Gerontol. 2022 Sep 10;168:111951. doi: 10.1016/j.exger.2022.111951. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTo date, there is no study addressing the time-varying confounding bias in the association of handgrip strength (HGS) with all-cause or cardiovascular mortality. Therefore, we conducted marginal structural models (MSM) to provide causal estimations on the associations of HGS with all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in a representative sample of adults aged 50 years or older. Data from 29 countries including 121,116 participants (276,994 observations; mean age 63.7 years; 56.3 % women) free from prior heart attack or str...

Telerehabilitation of Post-Stroke Patients with Motor Function Disorders: A Review
AbstractStroke is the main reason for disabilities of increasing geriatric population. It affects brain and motor function domains significantly reducing the life quality. Recent coronavirus pandemic raised a question on changing approaches to deliver post-stroke rehabilitation services to geriatric patients due to their high risk of serious illness. This paper presents an overview of current telerehabilitation approaches for motor function recovery and balance training of post-stroke patients. We used papers from peer-reviewed medical journals on stroke telerehabilitation. The review showed exergames, virtual reality (VR)...

Intraoperative and Early Postoperative Risk Factors for the Development of Acute Cerebrovascular Accident in Elderly Patients after Coronary-Artery Bypass Grafting
AbstractThis work presents data on the problem of ischemic heart disease, surgical myocardial revascularization, as well as the risk of developing acute cerebrovascular accident (ACVA) in elderly patients with coronary-artery bypass grafting (CABG). We conducted a study to identify risk factors for the development of ACVA in elderly patients. Predictors of ACVA development in the operative and early postoperative periods are identified. It is proven that the time of extubation, increased PCO2 levels, and hyperlactatemia are reliable intraoperative and early postoperative predictors of ACVA in elderly patients with CABG. Th...

Quality of life among post-stroke Jordanian survivors: a prospective study
This study aims to assess the quality of life (QOL) and the related factors in patients post-stroke in Jordan. Prospective, the cross-sectional study recruited 100 participants with stroke from three public hospitals from December 1, 2021 to February 1, 2022. Patients with stroke were interviewed to fill the stroke-specific quality of life questionnaire. Forty-five per cent of the participants were male. More than half of the participants (53%) were married, and the average age of the participants was 63.6 (SD =3.8). Most of the participants had an ischemic stroke (86%) with an affected left side (65%). The overall Q...

Disagreement about perceptions of patient disability between the stroke patient and caregiver: a cross sectional study exploring the association to patient and caregiver quality of life
CONCLUSION: Findings suggest the association of disagreement with QOL differs between patients and caregivers. Further research is needed to carefully appraise the relationship and interaction between patient and caregiver.PMID:36036267 | DOI:10.1080/13607863.2022.2116400

Potentially inappropriate medications are negatively associated with functional recovery in patients with sarcopenia after stroke
CONCLUSIONS: High admission PIMs prescription numbers are negatively associated with favorable discharge functional status and muscle strength in older patients with sarcopenia after stroke.PMID:36038811 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-022-02224-7

Cognitive Impairment After Stroke and Treatment with Fluoxetine: A Planned Analysis of the AFFINITY Randomised Controlled Trial
Strokes increase the risk of cognitive impairment and dementia, and the risk of post-stroke cognitive decline does not subside with time.1 Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), such as fluoxetine, display neuroprotective and neuro-regenerative properties in animal models of brain ischaemia,2 raising hope that their use could lessen the detrimental effects of stroke on cognition.

Association between frailty index based on routine laboratory tests and risk of cerebral small vessel disease in elderly  patients: a hospital-based observational study
CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated that a higher FI-Lab score might be associated with the presence of WMH, EPVS, silent lacunar infarcts, as well as severe total CSVD burden in older patients with minor stroke or TIA. The FI-Lab provides a basis for the prediction of CSVD.PMID:35925517 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-022-02207-8
