Prediction of post-stroke cognitive impairment by Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) performances in acute stroke: comparison of three normative datasets
CONCLUSIONS: The classification of acute stroke patients as normal/impaired based on MoCA thresholds proposed by general population normative datasets underestimated patients at risk of persistent PSCI. We calculated a new adjusted MoCA score predictive of PSCI in acute stroke patients to be further tested in larger studies.PMID:35441928 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-022-02133-9

Impact of Pre-Stroke Dementia or Mild Cognitive Impairment on Stroke Outcome: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Conclusions: Our meta-analysis shows an increased risk of mortality in stroke patients with a history of PSD and PSMCI. Proper clinical management and increased attention are therefore required for the prevention and management of stroke in patients with cognitive deficits.Dement Geriatr Cogn Disord

Early-life exposure to Chinese famine and stroke risk in mid- to late life: the mediating roles of cognitive function and depression
Limited research has examined the role that famine exposure plays in adulthood stroke risk. We aim to explore the causal implications of early exposure to the Great Chinese Famine on stroke risk and determine ...

GM130 protects against blood-brain barrier disruption and brain injury after intracerebral hemorrhage by regulating autophagy formation
Exp Gerontol. 2022 Mar 21:111772. doi: 10.1016/j.exger.2022.111772. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBlood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption following intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) significantly contributes to neurological deficits. Tight junction (TJ) protein loss in brain endothelial cells leads to BBB disruption. We previously revealed the importance of the Golgi apparatus (GA) in maintaining TJ integrity in mouse brain endothelial (bEnd.3) cells, but the specific mechanisms remain unknown. Herein, we investigated the potential role of the GA in BBB damage and neurological dysfunction after ICH using bEnd.3 cells and hemin t...

Experiences of family caregivers 3-months after stroke: results of the prospective trans-regional network for stroke intervention with telemedicine registry (TRANSIT-Stroke)
Long-term support of stroke patients living at home is often delivered by family caregivers (FC). We identified characteristics of stroke patients being associated with receiving care by a FC 3-months (3  M) af...

The Aging Brain and Benefits of Exercise versus Increased Prevalence of Sedentary Lifestyle: Lessons Learned from Behavioral Economics on Irrational Decision Making
Thereis growing evidence for the benefits of exercise to the aging brain. Exercise promotes brain function, improves brain metabolism, cerebrovascular flow, and neuroplasticity. All these contribute to cognitive reserve and prevention of late life cognitive decline. Conversely, a sedentary lifestyle has been shown to increase all causes of mortality, double the risk of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases which are significant risk factors to stroke and vascular cognitive decline. Inactivity also increases the risk for late life depression and anxiety.

Evaluating and Characterizing an Individually-Tailored Community Exercise Program for Older Adults With Chronic Neurological Conditions: A Mixed-Methods Study
J Aging Phys Act. 2022 Mar 16:1-14. doi: 10.1123/japa.2021-0292. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA mixed-methods approach was used to study an individually-tailored community exercise program for people with a range of chronic neurological conditions (e.g., stroke, spinal cord injury, brain injury, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease) and abilities. The program was delivered to older adults (mean age: 62 ± 9 years) with chronic neurological conditions across a 12-week and an 8-week term. Participants attended 88% of sessions and completed 89% of prescribed exercises in those sessions. There were no adverse events. Clini...
