Sex differences in cognitive impairment after focal ischemia in middle-aged rats and the effect of iv miR-20a-3p treatment
Neurobiol Aging. 2023 May 5;129:168-177. doi: 10.1016/j.neurobiolaging.2023.05.001. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTStroke is a major cause of death and disability worldwide and is also a leading cause of vascular dementia and Alzheimer's disease, with older women experiencing accelerated decline. Our previous studies show that intravenous (iv) injections of miR-20a-3p, a small noncoding RNA (miRNA) delivered after stroke improves acute stroke outcomes in middle-aged male and female rats. The present study tested whether mir-20a-3p treatment would also ameliorate stroke-induced cognitive decline in the chronic phase. Acyclic...

The effect of treatment strategy on long-term follow-up results in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation in Turkey: AFTER-2 subgroup analysis
CONCLUSION: It was found that rhythm control strategy is preferred in AF patients in Turkey. We found a lower rate of ischemic CVD/TIA in patients in the rhythm control group. Although no difference was observed in mortality rates, we found a higher rate of hospitalization in the rhythm control group.PMID:37329474 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-023-02467-y

Association of triglyceride-glucose index with myocardial injury post-stroke in older patients with first-ever ischemic stroke
Myocardial injury post-stroke is a common sequela of acute stroke. Triglyceride-glucose index (TyG index), a valuable surrogate indicator of insulin resistance, has been suggested to be closely related to card...

Impact of influenza, herpes zoster, and pneumococcal vaccinations on the incidence of cardiovascular events in subjects aged over 65  years: a systematic review
AbstractThis systematic review aims to summarize the impact of vaccination against influenza, shingles, and pneumococcus on the incidence on the risk of cardiovascular events in the elderly. This protocol was developed in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. We conducted a literature search and identified all relevant articles published regarding the matter up to September 2022. We retrieved 38 studies (influenza vaccine  = 33, pneumococcal vaccine = 5, and zoster vaccine = 2). A total of 28 and 2 studies have shown that influenza and pneumococcal vaccines significantly lower the risk of cardiovascular disease ...

Safety outcomes of direct oral anticoagulants in older adults with atrial fibrillation: a systematic review and meta-analysis of (subgroup analyses from) randomized controlled trials
AbstractBalancing stroke prevention and risk of bleeding in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) is challenging. Direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) are by now considered standard of care for treating patients with AF in international guidelines. Our objective was to assess the safety of long-term intake of DOACs in older adults with AF. We included RCTs in elderly ( ≥ 65 years) patients with AF. A systematic search in MEDLINE and EMBASE was performed on 19 April 2022. For determination of risk of bias, the RoB 2 tool was applied. We pooled outcomes using random-effects meta-analyses. The quality of evidence was as...

Alleviation of ischemic brain injury by exercise preconditioning is associated with modulation of autophagy and mitochondrial dynamics in cerebral cortex of female aged mice
Exp Gerontol. 2023 May 29:112226. doi: 10.1016/j.exger.2023.112226. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEvidence from clinical studies and preclinical studies supports that exercise preconditioning can not only reduce the risk of stroke but also improve brain tissue and functional outcome after stroke. It has been demonstrated that autophagy and mitochondrial dynamics are involved in ischemic stroke. However, it is still unclear whether exercise preconditioning-induced neuroprotection against stroke is associated with modulation of autophagy and mitochondrial dynamics. Although age and sex interactively affect ischemic stroke ri...

Older Age is Associated with Positional Obstructive Sleep Apnea
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a highly prevalent disease affecting almost 1 billion people worldwide (1), and its prevalence continues to rise with increasing age and rates of obesity (2,3). Untreated OSA has been regarded as a strong risk factor for stroke(4), myocardial infarction and hypertension(5), diabetes mellitus(6), motor vehicle accidents (7), and cognitive impairment in the elderly population (8). Therapies for OSA include continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), oral devices and hypoglossal nerve stimulation (9).

Coronary and carotid artery dysfunction and KV7 overexpression in a mouse model of Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome
AbstractHutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome (HGPS) is an extremely rare genetic disease caused by expression of progerin, a lamin A variant that is also expressed at low levels in non-HGPS individuals. Although HGPS patients die predominantly from myocardial infarction and stroke, the mechanisms that provoke pathological alterations in the coronary and cerebral arteries in HGPS remain ill defined. Here, we assessed vascular function in the coronary arteries (CorAs) and carotid arteries (CarAs) of progerin-expressingLmnaG609G/G609G mice (G609G), both in resting conditions and after hypoxic stimulus. Wire myography, pharmac...

Ultrasound brain pulses put mice in a hibernation-like state
It’s a classic science fiction trope: Astronauts on an interstellar journey are kept in sleek, refrigerated pods in a state of suspended animation. Although such pods remain purely fictional, scientists have pursued research into inducing a hibernation-like state in humans to lessen the damage caused by medical conditions such as heart attacks and stroke, and to reduce the stress and costs of future long-distance space sojourns. In a study published today in Nature Metabolism , scientists report that they can trigger a similar state in mice by targeting part of their brain with pulses of ultrasound ...

Brain and Cognition Signature Fingerprinting Vascular Health in Diabetic Individuals: An International Multi-Cohort Study
CONCLUSION: Cognitive decline significantly elevates the risk of diabetic vascular complications and is correlated with retinal and renal microcirculation damage. Cognitive screening tests are strongly recommended as routine tools for management of diabetes.PMID:37230837 | DOI:10.1016/j.jagp.2023.04.010
