Treatment of Vascular and Neurodegenerative Forms of Cognitive Impairment and Dementias
Ideally, dementia care should be provided by a collaborative team. Eligible patients should be treated with the cognitive-enhancing medications, the cholinesterase inhibitors and memantine. For most of the common causes of dementia, there are no disease-modifying medications, with the exception that vascular dementia can be prevented by treating vascular risk factors to prevent stroke. There is hope that Alzheimer disease can be treated by using monoclonal antibodies that target amyloid beta, although more trials are needed. Holistic, patient-centered care can enhance quality and extend the time that the patient can live s...

Antiplatelets and Vascular Dementia: A Systematic Review
J Aging Res. 2022 Sep 19;2022:9780067. doi: 10.1155/2022/9780067. eCollection 2022.ABSTRACTVascular dementia (VD) is a neurocognitive disorder whose precise definition is still up for debate. VD generally refers to dementia that is primarily caused by cerebrovascular disease or impaired cerebral blood flow. It is a subset of vascular cognitive impairment, a class of diseases that relate any cerebrovascular injury as a causal or correlating factor for cognitive decline, most commonly seen in the elderly. Patients who present with both cognitive impairment and clinical or radiologic indications of cerebrovascular pathology s...

Arterial Glyceryl Trinitrate in Acute Ischemic Stroke after Thrombectomy for Neuroprotection (AGAIN): Rationale, design and protocol for a prospective randomized controlled trial
Although endovascular recanalization therapy demonstrates robust clinical efficacy in acute ischemic stroke (AIS), not all victims of these cerebrovascular accidents can benefit from it and achieve a favorable...

Association of Delirium Incidence with Visitation Restrictions due to COVID-19 Pandemic in Patients with Acute Cerebrovascular Disease in a Stroke-Unit Setting: A Retrospective Cohort Study
Conclusion: Pandemic-associated visitation restrictions and specifically absolute visitation restrictions are associated with a higher incidence of delirium among stroke-unit patients with acute cerebrovascular disease. Benefit and harm of visitation restrictions should be carefully weighed and adjustments considered for patients otherwise at increased risk for delirium.Gerontology

The association of measures of body shape and adiposity with incidence of cardiometabolic disease from an ageing perspective
AbstractWhile obesity increases the risk of developing cardiometabolic diseases (CMDs), these associations seem to attenuate with increasing age, albeit studied poorly. The present study aimed to investigate the associations between adiposity and CMDs in sex-specific groups of chronological age and leukocyte telomere length (LTL) as a measure of biological age. We investigated the associations between BMI, a body shape index, waist-to-hip ratio (adjusted for BMI) and total body fat, and incident coronary artery disease (CAD), type 2 diabetes (T2D) and ischemic stroke (IS) in 413,017 European-ancestry participants of the UK...

Factors predicting burden among male caregivers of older adults with stroke
This study aims to examine the factors predicting burden among the male caregivers of older adults with stroke. This was a descriptive cross-sectional study. A simple random sampling technique was used to recruit 98 male caregivers in the outpatient department’s neurological clinic, at Banphaeo General Hospital. Data was collected using six questionnaires: the demographic questionnaire, the center for epidemiologic studies depression scale, the perceived health status interview form, the caregiver and patient relationship interview form, the Barthel ADL index and the Zarit burden interview. Descriptive statistics and ...

Longitudinal association of handgrip strength with all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in older adults using a causal framework
Exp Gerontol. 2022 Sep 9:111951. doi: 10.1016/j.exger.2022.111951. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTo date, there is no study addressing the time-varying confounding bias in the association of handgrip strength (HGS) with all-cause or cardiovascular mortality. Therefore, we conducted marginal structural models (MSM) to provide causal estimations on the associations of HGS with all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in a representative sample of adults aged 50 years or older. Data from 29 countries including 121,116 participants (276,994 observations; mean age 63.7 years; 56.3 % women) free from prior heart attack or stroke w...
