Correlation between frailty and cardiac structure and function in echocardiography in elderly patients with normal ejection fraction
CONCLUSION: Frailty is closely associated with several heart structural and functional alterations, which not only manifested as LV hypertrophy and reduced LV systolic function, but also decreased LV diastolic function, RV systolic function, and left atrial systolic function. Frailty is an independent risk factor for LV hypertrophy, LV diastolic dysfunction, LVGLS reduction, and reduced RV systolic function.TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: ChiCTR2000033419. Multimorbidity and functional disability among older adults - the role of inflammation and glycemic status: An Observational Longitudinal Study
Conclusion: The findings suggest potential for anti-inflammatory management among older women and optimal glycemic control among older men with these particular multimorbidity combinations as focus for therapeutic/preventive options for maintaining functional health.

Forecasting prevalence and mortality of Alzheimer's disease using the partitioning models
This study uses 5 %-Medicare data (1991-2017) to identify, partition, and forecast age-adjusted prevalence and incidence-based mortality of AD as well as their causal components.METHODS: The core underlying methodology is the partitioning analysis that calculates the relative impact each component has on the overall trend as well as intertemporal changes in the strength and direction of these impacts. B-spline functions estimated for all parameters of partitioning models represent the basis for projections of these parameters in future.RESULTS: Prevalence of AD is predicted to be stable between 2017 and 2028 primarily due ...

MRI for all: Cheap portable scanners aim to revolutionize medical imaging
.news-article__hero--featured .parallax__element{ object-position: 47% 50%; -o-object-position: 47% 50%; } The patient, a man in his 70s with a shock of silver hair, lies in the neuro intensive care unit (neuro ICU) at Yale New Haven Hospital. Looking at him, you’d never know that a few days earlier a tumor was removed from his pituitary gland. The operation didn’t leave a mark because, as is standard, surgeons reached the tumor through his nose. He chats cheerfully with a pair of research associates who have come to check his progress with a new and potentially revolutionary device they are testing. The cylind...

Inappropriate Combined Antiplatelet and Anticoagulant Therapy in Older Patients with Atrial Fibrillation: Trend over Time (2009 –18)
ConclusionsWhile inappropriate combined antiplatelet and anticoagulant therapy has declined over the last decade, there is still room for improvement. Antiplatelet deprescribing should be considered in all patients with inappropriate combined antiplatelet and anticoagulant therapy, including those with vascular disease and no recent cardiovascular event.

Is there a bidirectional relationship between stroke risk and mood disorders in older adult patients?
Research suggests that there may be a causal relationship between stroke and depression symptoms. However, the direction of this relationship remains unclear, which suggests the possibility that it is bidirectional.   Indeed, some findings suggest that depression is a common occurrence post-stroke and that individuals who have a greater stroke risk are also more likely to have depression. Conversely, there is also evidence that depression may be a risk factor for stroke. In addition, although most of the liter ature focuses on the relationship between cardiovascular health and depression, less is known about other mood di...

The Time is Now: Climate Change and Aging Adults ’ Mental Health
Climate change is a major public health emergency, with significant consequences to not only physical health, but also to mental health across the lifespan. Aging adults are  more likely to be exposed and vulnerable to heat waves and extreme weather events (e.g., hurricanes, floods), poor air quality, and vector-borne infectious diseases. Risk factors include chronic medical conditions; limited mobility due to medical or neurological disease (e.g., stroke, Parkinson's disease); sensory deficits; cognitive impairment; polypharmacy; psychiatric illness; linguistic isolation; and living alone or having limited support.

Implications of Under-Reporting Medication Side Effects: Beta-Blockers in Heart Failure as a Case Example
ConclusionWe conclude that under-reporting perceived side effects of beta-blockers among adults with heart failure is common, is associated with Black race and low education, and may contribute to patient willingness to take additional medication to prevent future medical encounters.

Your native tongue holds a special place in your brain, even if you speak 10 languages
This study “contributes to our understanding of how our brain learns new things,” says Augusto Buchweitz, a cognitive neuroscientist at the University of Connecticut, Storrs, who was not involved in the work. “The earlier you learn something, the more your brain [adapts] and probably uses less resources.” Scientists have largely ignored what’s going on inside the brains of polyglots—people who speak more than five languages—says Ev Fedorenko, a cognitive neuroscientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology who led the new study. “There’s oodles of work on individuals whose language systems are...

The association between white matter hyperintensities of presumed vascular origin and disability is mediated by age: a population-based study in stroke-free older adults

Associations of WWC1 variants with Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia among rural older adults in China: A population-based study
Neurobiol Aging. 2023 Jan 8:S0197-4580(23)00003-9. doi: 10.1016/j.neurobiolaging.2023.01.003. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWe sought to examine the associations of common WWC1 variants with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and vascular dementia (VaD) among rural-dwelling older adults in China. This population-based study used data from the baseline assessments (March -September 2018) of MIND-China. AD and VaD were diagnosed following the international criteria. Of the 5455 participants (age≥60 years, 57.27% women), 182 were diagnosed with AD and 88 with VaD. Logistic regression analysis suggested that WWC1 rs17070145 C allele (...

Unlucky numbers: Fighting murder convictions that rest on shoddy stats
LEIDEN, THE NETHERLANDS— When a Dutch nurse named Lucia de Berk stood trial for serial murder in 2003, statistician Richard Gill was aware of the case. But he saw no reason to stick his nose into it. De Berk was a pediatric nurse at Juliana Children’s Hospital in The Hague. In 2001, after a baby died while she was on duty, a colleague told superiors that De Berk had been present at a suspiciously high number of deaths and resuscitations. Hospital staff immediately informed the police. When investigators reexamined records from De Berk’s shifts, they found 10 suspicious incidents. Three other hospitals where D...
