Quality indicators in acute stroke care: a prospective observational survey in 13 Italian regions.
CONCLUSIONS: Our data confirm the need of quality monitoring in stroke care. Although SU patients showed a better adherence to quality indicators, overall compliance was unsatisfactory. PMID: 24293350 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Comparison of the Risk Factor Profile, Stroke Subtypes, and Outcomes Between Stroke Patients Aged 65 Years or Younger and Elderly Stroke Patients: A Hospital-based Study
Conclusion We conclude that, apart from risk factors and stroke subtypes, the functional outcomes observed in the two groups differed. Early identification of these differences with good management may help to improve the clinical outcomes in younger stroke patients.

Stroke‐Associated Differences in Rates of Activity of Daily Living Loss Emerge Years Before Stroke Onset
ConclusionIn adults at risk of stroke, disproportionate ADL limitations emerge well before stroke onset. Excess disability in stroke survivors should not be entirely attributed to effects of acute stroke or quality of acute stroke care. Although there are many possible causal pathways between ADL and stroke, the association may be noncausal. For example, ADL limitations may be a consequence of stroke risk factors (e.g., diabetes mellitus) or early cerebrovascular ischemia.

Association between estimated glomerular filtration rate and clinical outcomes in patients with acute ischaemic stroke: results from China National Stroke Registry
Conclusions: a low eGFR was associated with increased risks of all-cause mortality and recurrent stroke independent of the traditional vascular risk factors in Chinese stroke patients.

Suicide in Stroke Survivors: Epidemiology and Prevention
Abstract Stroke is a dramatic event and is associated with potentially severe consequences, including disability, mortality, and social costs. Stroke may occur at any age; however, most strokes occur in individuals aged 65 years and older. Previous research has found that stroke increases suicide risk, especially among women and younger patients. The aim of the current review is to investigate the relationship between suicide and stroke in order to determine which stroke patients are at elevated risk for suicide. Moreover, we review the literature in order to provide pharmacological treatment strategies for strok...

Clinical characteristics of stroke occurring in the toilet: Are older adults more vulnerable?
ConclusionsThe toilet is a closed space where stroke occurs disproportionately frequently. Effort to reduce the incidence of toilet‐related strokes is warranted, as early patient detection is not always feasible. Geriatr Gerontol Int 2017; ••: ••–••.

248 An Evaluation of Patient Education Post-Stroke
ConclusionThese results illustrate areas in which we can improve education post-stroke, including ensuring patients receive individualised information about the aetiology of their stroke, risk factors and the importance of new medications. It also highlights the importance of ensuring advice regarding driving is clearly explained and documented.

311 Older Adults Awareness and Response to Stroke in Ireland.
ConclusionAwareness of stroke symptoms does not necessarily influence response to stroke in older adults. Future stroke awareness campaigns should consider FAST2 which speaks to treatment (thrombolysis or thrombectomy) as well as time.

123 Empowering Patients after Stroke: Development of a Stroke Information Booklet
ConclusionPatients/Families are keen to receive information regarding stroke, particularly about future risk of stroke. Empowering patients with information about stroke that is relevant to them and their care providers is a fundamental part of secondary stroke prevention. We also need to focus more on the psychological impact of stroke. Our booklet will incorporate information we have gathered in this study to make it a truly patient centred resource.

Quality of life among post-stroke Jordanian survivors: a prospective study
This study aims to assess the quality of life (QOL) and the related factors in patients post-stroke in Jordan. Prospective, the cross-sectional study recruited 100 participants with stroke from three public hospitals from December 1, 2021 to February 1, 2022. Patients with stroke were interviewed to fill the stroke-specific quality of life questionnaire. Forty-five per cent of the participants were male. More than half of the participants (53%) were married, and the average age of the participants was 63.6 (SD =3.8). Most of the participants had an ischemic stroke (86%) with an affected left side (65%). The overall Q...

The future cost of stroke in Ireland: an analysis of the potential impact of demographic change and implementation of evidence-based therapies
Background and purpose: this paper examines the impact of demographic change from 2007 to 2021 on the total cost of stroke in Ireland and analyses potential impacts of expanded access to stroke unit care and thrombolytic therapy on stroke outcomes and costs. Methods: total costs of stroke are estimated for the projected number of stroke cases in 2021 in Ireland. Analysis also estimates the potential number of deaths or institutionalised cases averted among incident stroke cases in Ireland in 2007 at different rates of access to stroke unit care and thrombolytic therapy. Drawing on these results, total stroke costs in Irela...

IL-6 is a predictive biomarker for stroke associated infection and future mortality in the elderly after an ischemic stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: These data suggest that IL-6 may be a key biomarker for predicting stroke associated infection and mortality in the first two years post stroke. PMID: 23872300 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Dementia prediction for people with stroke in populations: is mild cognitive impairment a useful concept?
Conclusion: criteria for MCI do not appear to capture risk of dementia in the context of stroke in the population. In stroke cases, subjective and objective cognitive performance predicts dementia and these variables could possibly be incorporated into dementia risk models for stroke cases. Identifying individuals with stroke at greatest risk of dementia has important implications for treatment and intervention.

Elevated inflammatory markers predict mortality in long-term ischemic stroke-survivors: a population-based prospective study.
CONCLUSIONS: Fibrinogen and IL-6 were independent predictors of mortality in long-term stroke-survivors, whereas elevated hs-CRP predicted mortality in stroke-free subjects. Mortality risk prediction in stroke-survivors differed from that of stroke-free subjects. PMID: 27146666 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
