The association between fatigue severity and risk of falls among middle-aged and older Australian stroke survivors
CONCLUSION: This study revealed an association between an increasing risk of falls with increasing severity of post stroke fatigue. Accurate detection and management of fatigue may help reduce the risk of falls and should be the focus of future research.PMID:35796976 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-022-02179-9

Subjective Memory Complaints and Their Relationship with the Objective Cognitive Performance of Stroke Patients
Conclusion: Changes in SMCQ scores of stroke patients were inconsistent and varied when compared to changes in MMSE and MBI scores, indicating that it is not a reliable metric on its own. SMCs have a clinical relationship with OCP and significant emotional and motivational effects. In clinical practice, it is important to understand and consider SMCs after stroke.Dement Geriatr Cogn Disord

Implications of frailty in acute ischemic stroke receiving endovascular treatment: systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSION: Pre-stroke frailty is an important predictor of poor prognosis assessed by EVT and can be added to the classical predictors of stroke outcome. Routine assessment of pre-stroke frailty can help patients to make decisions about the efficacy of their choice of EVT.PMID:36964867 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-023-02383-1

Well-being of elderly stroke survivors in Chinese communities: mediating effects of meaning in life.
Conclusion: This study examines the role of meaning in life in stroke experience from an existential perspective. The modifiable features of meaning in life may offer an intervening angle for improving the well-being of elderly stroke survivors. PMID: 24188409 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Thrombolytic therapy with intravenous recombinant tissue plasminogen activator in Japanese older patients with acute ischemic stroke: Fukuoka Stroke Registry
ConclusionsIn patients treated with rt‐PA, old age is associated with poor functional outcome and in‐hospital mortality. However, the probability of neurological improvement and symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage in older patients is comparable with that in younger patients. Geriatr Gerontol Int 2013; ●●: ●●–●●.

Age-based prediction of incidence of complications during inpatient stroke rehabilitation: a retrospective longitudinal cohort study
Background: Stroke complications can occur not only in the acute ward but also during the subsequent rehabilitation period. However, existing studies have not adequately addressed the incidence of various complications among stroke in patients undergoing rehabilitation using a longitudinal method. We aimed to investigate the longitudinal impact of age on complication rates in patients undergoing inpatient stroke rehabilitation at different disease stages. Methods: Five hundred and sixty-eight first-time stroke patients transferred to the rehabilitation ward between July 2002 and June 2012 were included in the study. Patien...

Effects of Antiplatelet Agents on Functional Outcome and Cognitive Status in Patients with Acute Ischemic Stroke
Conclusion The use of antiplatelet agents in acute ischemic stroke may have a favorable effect on functional outcome and cognitive status in patients at 3 months poststroke.

Safety of intravenous thrombolysis for ischaemic stroke in Asian octogenarians and nonagenarians
Conclusion: octogenarians and nonagenarians receiving IVT have a similar safety outcome. Asian octogenarians and nonagenarians receiving IVT for ischaemic stroke are not at higher risk of symptomatic ICH and mortality than Western patients.

Microstructural abnormality in white matter, regulatory T lymphocytes, and depressive symptoms after stroke
ConclusionsFA reductions in the anterior limb of the internal capsule cause abnormality in the frontal‐subcortical circuits and confer a biological vulnerability, which in combination with environmental stressors results in the onset of depression. Our findings also demonstrated the possibility of preventing post‐stroke depression by targeting the role of regulatory T lymphocytes in brain tissue repair and regeneration after stroke.

Pain among institutionalized stroke patients and its relation to emotional distress and social engagement
ConclusionsPain is a serious and multidimensional problem among institutionalized stroke patients. It is related to increased ED, which in turn can be a pathway to low SE as an indicator of social vulnerability. Future research should reveal how pain management in nursing homes can be tailored to the needs of this patient group. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Outcome of intravenous recombinant tissue plasminogen activator for acute ischemic stroke in patients aged over 80 years
ConclusionsRt‐PA therapy would appear to improve prognosis in the elderly with ischemic stroke. This suggests that age alone should no longer be a barrier to rt‐PA therapy. Geriatr Gerontol Int 2015; ●●: ●●–●●.

Pharmacotherapy to Enhance Cognitive and Motor Recovery Following Stroke
Abstract Stroke is a leading cause of disability among older adults and more than half of stroke survivors have some residual neurological impairment. Traditionally, managing the aftermath of stroke has been by the implementation of several physical and language therapy modalities. The limitations of these rehabilitation efforts have sparked an interest in finding other ways to enhance neurological recovery. Some of these novel approaches have included pharmacological interventions, cell-derived treatments, and cortical magnetic stimulation. Mounting evidence over the last 2 decades suggests that pharmacological ...
