Erectile dysfunction (ED) after ischemic stroke: association between prevalence and site of lesion
Conclusions Disruption of the central network assuring erection might contribute to increased ED severity and prevalence after stroke. Anti-erectile effects of functional and psychological impairment or medication added after stroke may also contribute to ED but must be evaluated in larger patients groups.

Timing of Postoperative Stroke and Risk of Mortality After Noncardiac Surgery: A Cohort Study
CONCLUSIONS: Postoperative stroke tends to occur within 7 days following noncardiac surgery. Such timing of postoperative stroke carries a higher mortality risk, suggesting that targeted efforts to prevent stroke should focus on the first week following surgery to reduce the incidence and mortality associated with this complication. Our findings contribute to the growing understanding of stroke after noncardiac surgery and may help clinicians develop tailored perioperative neuroprotective strategies to prevent or improve treatment and outcomes of postoperative stroke.PMID:37303467 | PMC:PMC10251695 | DOI:10.14740/jocmr4877

Physical activity patterns of acute stroke patients managed in a rehabilitation focused stroke unit.
Conclusions. This study suggests that commencement of physical activity occurs earlier and physical activity is at a higher level early after stroke in this comprehensive stroke unit, when compared to studies of other acute stroke models of care. PMID: 24024192 [PubMed - in process]

Moderate agreement between self-reported stroke and hospital-recorded stroke in two cohorts of Australian women: a validation study
Conclusion: Among women who returned survey questionnaires within the period of interest, validity of self-reported stroke was fair to moderate, but is probably underestimated. Agreement between self-report and hospital-recorded stroke was associated with individual characteristics. Where clinically verified stroke data are unavailable, self-report may be a reasonable alternative method of stroke ascertainment for some epidemiological studies.

Psychological distress, social support and medication adherence in patients with ischemic stroke in the mainland of China
This study was aimed to investigate the changes of psychological stress, social support and medication adherence in patients with ischemic stroke in the mainland of China. In this study, 90 patients with hemiplegia one year after first-ever middle cerebral artery infarction (stroke group) in the Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University from June 2008 to June 2011 were recruited for interview. Ninety age- and sex-matched normal volunteers (control group) were also examined at the same period. The psychological distress was assessed by the Symptom Checklist 90 (SCL-90), the social support by the Social Support Rating Scale (SSR...

Methylation in the matrix metalloproteinase-2 gene is associated with cerebral ischemic stroke
This study included 298 patients with ischemic stroke and 258 age-matched and sex-matched controls. MMP-2 promoter methylation levels were measured by pyrosequencing at eight potential cytosine-guanine (CpG) sites. Multivariate regression analysis was used to adjust for general stroke risk factors, and the specific effects of sex and stroke subtype were analysed. The methylation levels of MMP-2 in the peripheral blood of the patients with stroke were lower than controls in all eight CpG sites, especially at site 1, site 5, site 7, and site 8 (adjusted p=0.036, 0.002, 0.021, and 0.041, respectively). In subgroup analysis by...

Clinical Evidence of Exercise Benefits for Stroke.
Authors: Han P, Zhang W, Kang L, Ma Y, Fu L, Jia L, Yu H, Chen X, Hou L, Wang L, Yu X, Kohzuki M, Guo Q Abstract Even though stroke is the third, not the first, most common cause of disability-adjusted life years in developed countries, it is one of the most expensive to treat. Part of the expense is due to secondary problems in the post-stroke period including: cognition, memory, attention span, pain, sensation loss, psychological issues, and problems with mobility and balance. Research has identified that exercise has both positive physical and psychosocial effects for post-stroke patients. Therefore, this scient...

Incidence & prevalence of stroke in India: A systematic review.
CONCLUSIONS: A paucity of good-quality epidemiological studies on stroke in India emphasizes the need for a coordinated effort at both the State and national level to study the burden of stroke in India. Future investment in the population-based epidemiological studies on stroke would lead to better preventive measures against stroke and better rehabilitation measures for stroke-related disabilities in the country. Long-term T cell responses in the brain after an ischemic stroke.
Authors: Selvaraj UM, Stowe AM Abstract Stroke, which occurs during a loss of blood flow to the brain, is a global disease that accounts for 10% of yearly mortality. But stroke is also a leading cause of long-term adult disability, with recovery continuing for months to years after initial stroke onset. This long-term functional recovery from stroke encompasses changes in neuronal structure and function, and occurs throughout the post-stroke brain. Much less understood is whether the adaptive immune cells that infiltrated the brain during acute post-stroke neuroinflammation remain long-term, and if their presence s...

Risk Factors, Clinical Features and Prognosis for Subtypes of Ischemic Stroke in a Chinese Population
SummaryIt is unanimously accepted that stroke is a highly heterogeneous disorder. Different subtypes of ischemic stroke may have different risk factors, clinical features, and prognoses. The aim of this study was to evaluate the risk factors, clinical characteristics, and prognoses of different subtypes of ischemic stroke defined by the Trial of ORG10172 in Acute Stroke Treatment (TOAST) criteria. We prospectively analyzed the data from 530 consecutive patients who were admitted to our hospital with acute ischemic stroke within 7 days of stroke onset during the study period. Standardized data assessment was used and the ca...

Stroke Incidence in Survivors of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning in South Korea: A Population-Based Longitudinal Study.
CONCLUSIONS CO poisoning is a high-risk factor for the development of stroke, evidenced by high incidences of stroke after CO poisoning. Practical strategies for preventing stroke after CO poisoning are needed, because stroke after CO poisoning affects adults of almost all ages, significantly increasing their socioeconomic burden. Meteorological Factors Related to Emergency Admission of Elderly Stroke Patients in Shanghai: Analysis with a Multilayer Perceptron Neural Network.
CONCLUSIONS Outdoor temperature and related meteorological parameters are associated with stroke attack. The absolute temperature difference and the weather types have adverse effects on stroke. Further study is needed to determine if other meteorological factors such as pollutants also play important roles in stroke attack. PMID: 26590182 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Low Concentration of BDNF in the Acute Phase of Ischemic Stroke as a Factor in Poor Prognosis in Terms of Functional Status of Patients.
CONCLUSIONS The neurological status and concentration of BDNF on the 1st day of ischemic stroke are independent prognostic factors in medium-term observation. Reduction in the concentration of BDNF in the acute phase of stroke is a factor for poor prognosis in terms of the functional status of patients on the 90th day after onset.
