A systematic review and meta-analysis of acute stroke unit care: What¿s beyond the statistical significance?
Conclusions: These findings demonstrate that a well-conducted meta-analysis can produce results that can be of value to policymakers but the choice of inclusion/exclusion criteria and outcomes in this context needs careful consideration. The financing of interventions such as stroke units that increase independency and reduce inpatient stays are worthwhile in a context of an ageing population with increasing care needs. One limitation of this study was the selection of trials published in only four languages: English, French, Dutch and German. This choice was pragmatic in the context of this study, where the objective was ...

Effects of a Stroke Primary Prevention Program on Risk Factors for At-Home Elderly.
CONCLUSIONS Based on the results of this study, participating in a stroke prevention program enabled at-risk elderly participants who lived at home in rural areas to perform health-promoting behaviors. This program may reduce the incidence of stroke by reducing risk factors and managing stroke precursor diseases. PMID: 26615035 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Patent foramen ovale (PFO), stroke and pregnancy
Patent foramen ovale (PFO)-related stroke is increasingly recognized as an important etiology of ischemic embolic stroke—accounting for up to 50% of strokes previously considered ‘cryptogenic’ or with an unknown mechanism. As a ‘back door to the brain,’ PFO can allow venous clots to enter arterial circulation via interatrial right-to-left shunting, potentially resulting in ischemic stroke. We observe that clinically, PFO-related stroke affects women of childbearing age, and that pregnancy—owing to major changes in hemocoagulative, hormonal, and cardiovascular parameters—can enhance...

Functional Activation-Informed Structural Changes during Stroke Recovery: A Longitudinal MRI Study.
Conclusion: This study demonstrated that combining the stroke-induced functional reorganization and structural change provided new insights into the underlying innate plasticity process during stroke recovery. Significance: This study proposed a new approach to integrate functional and structural information for investigating the innate plasticity after stroke. PMID: 29204440 [PubMed - in process]

Analysis of the Relationship between Adult Asthma and Stroke: A Longitudinal Follow-Up Study Using the Korean National Sample Cohort.
Abstract Several previous studies demonstrated the risk of stroke in asthma patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the risk of hemorrhagic and ischemic stroke in asthma patients, independent of age, sex, income, region of residence, and past medical histories. The Korean Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service-National Sample Cohort from 2002 through 2013 was used. Overall, 111,364 asthma patients ≥ 20 years old were matched to 111,364 control participants for age, sex, income, region of residence, hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia. Asthma was classified using ICD-10 codes (J45 and J46) an...

Do We Need to Distinguish Thrombolysis and Nonthrombolysis Patients When Applying Stroke-Associated Pneumonia Predicting Scores? An External Validation from a 2-Center Database.
CONCLUSIONS The AIS-APS had the highest AUC and goodness of fit in our population. All 4 scores can be applied regardless of whether thrombolysis has been performed on patients. PMID: 32921786 [PubMed - in process]

A nomogram for predicting the in-hospital risk of recurrence among patients with minor non-cardiac stroke
CONCLUSION: A prognostic nomogram that integrates clinical and imaging information to predict the in-hospital risk of stroke recurrence among patients after acute minor stroke was constructed and validated externally. The nomogram demonstrated adequate calibration and discrimination in both the development and validation cohort.PMID:35119325 | DOI:10.1080/03007995.2022.2038488

Clinical significance of obstructive sleep apnea in patients with acute coronary syndrome with or without prior stroke: a prospective cohort study
ConclusionsAmong ACS patients, the presence of OSA was associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular events in patients with prior stroke. Further trials exploring the efficacy of OSA treatment in high-risk patients with ACS and prior stroke are warranted.Trial registration Clinicaltrials.gov identifier NCT03362385.

Causal associations of circulating Helicobacter pylori antibodies with stroke and the mediating role of inflammation
ConclusionsOur results demonstrate thatH. pylori VacA antibody is the only causal determinant associated with the risk of stroke in the spectrum ofH. pylori-related antibodies, in which CRP may mediate the association. This study suggests that inhibition of the CRP signaling pathway may reduce the risk of stroke in patients with VacA-positiveH. pylori infection.

Effects of a web-based stroke education program on recurrence prevention behaviors among stroke patients: a pilot study
The effectiveness of methods to prevent stroke recurrence and of education focusing on learners’ needs has not been fully explored. The aims of this study were to assess the effects of such interventions among stroke patients and their primary caregivers and to evaluate the feasibility of a web-based stroke education program. The participants were 36 patients with a clinical diagnosis of ischemic stroke within 12 months post-stroke and their primary caregivers. The participants were randomly assigned to either an experimental or a control group. The primary measures included blood chemistry, self-reported health beha...

"Addressing the impact of stroke risk factors in a case control study in tertiary care hospitals": a case control study in Tertiary Care Hospitals of Peshawar, Khyber Phukhtoonkhwa (KPK) Pakistan
Conclusion: Hypertension, Smoking, diabetes, sedentary lifestyle and cardiac problems have strong correlations and association with Stroke and are the major risk factors of stroke. Prevention of these risk factors can lead to decrease in the incidence of stroke. B.M.I, diet, stress and family history of stroke had no significant association.

Amino Acid Biosignature in Plasma among Ischemic Stroke Subtypes.
Abstract Ischemic stroke is a neurovascular disorder caused by reduced or blockage of blood flow to the brain, which may permanently affect motor and cognitive abilities. The diagnostic of stroke is performed using imaging technologies, clinical evaluation, and neuropsychological protocols, but no blood test is available yet. In this work, we analyzed amino acid concentrations in blood plasma from poststroke patients in order to identify differences that could characterize the stroke etiology. Plasma concentrations of sixteen amino acids from patients with chronic ischemic stroke (n = 73) and the control group (n ...
