Association of visit-to-visit variability in blood pressure and first stroke risk in hypertensive patients with chronic kidney disease
Conclusion: In hypertensive adults with mild-to-moderate CKD, visit-to-visit variability in BP was significantly associated with the risk of subsequent first stroke.

Hypertension Among Hemorrhagic Stroke Patients in Northeast China: A Population-Based Study 2017-2019.
CONCLUSIONS The high prevalence of uncontrolled hypertension and high rates of blood pressure at stages 2 and 3 in patients with prior hemorrhagic stroke indicated a considerable stroke burden in northeast China. Therefore, effective and long-time management of hypertension in stroke survivors should be a priority. PMID: 33376232 [PubMed - in process]

Cortical propagation tracks functional recovery after stroke
In conclusion, our new spatiotemporal propagation indicators could represent promising biomarkers that are able to uncover neural correlates not only of motor deficits caused by stroke but also of functional recovery during rehabilitation. In turn, these insights could pave the way tow ards more targeted post-stroke therapies.

Deletion of Macrophage Migration Inhibitory Factor Worsens Stroke Outcome in Female Mice.
Abstract Sex is an important factor in the response to ischemic insults in both the laboratory and the clinic. Inflammation and cell death are points where sex-specific pathways diverge in stroke, and serum estrogen levels status affect the response to inflammation. The cytokine macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is detrimental in experimental stroke models in male animals. However MIF is known to have sex-specific actions on inflammation and wound healing. The role of MIF in the ischemic female brain has not been evaluated. A transient middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO/90 minutes) model was used to...

Inhibition of Calcium/Calmodulin-Dependent Protein Kinase Kinase {beta} and Calcium/Calmodulin-Dependent Protein Kinase IV Is Detrimental in Cerebral Ischemia Basic Sciences
Conclusions— Our data have established that the CaMKK/CaMK IV pathway is a key endogenous protective mechanism in ischemia. Our results suggest that this pathway serves as an important regulator of blood–brain barrier integrity and transcriptional activation of neuroprotective molecules in stroke.

Prestroke treatment with beta-blockers for hypertension is not associated with severity and poor outcome in patients with ischemic stroke: data from a national stroke registry
Background: Beta-blockers are not recommended as the initial therapy for hypertension. Reports on associations between use of beta-blockers and stroke severity are inconclusive. We assessed associations between prestroke use of beta-blockers and stroke severity, poststroke disability and death in a large group of hypertensive patients hospitalized with acute ischemic stroke. Methods: All 3915 patients with ischemic stroke, treated prestroke for hypertension and registered in the National Acute Stroke ISraeli, were included. Treatment for hypertension was classified by medication type (beta-blockers, diuretics, calcium ant...

Effect of Amlodipine in Stroke and Myocardial infarction: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
ConclusionIn the pooled analysis of data from 12 randomised controlled trials and one double-blinded cohort study measuring the effect of CCBs, we found that the CCB amlodipine reduced the risk of stroke and MI in hypertensive patients. Superior results for amlodipine were found in ten of the 13 studies included in this meta-analysis.

Association of serum calcium levels with clinical severity of ischemic stroke at the time of admission as defined by NIHSS score: A cross-sectional, observational study
CONCLUSION: Serum ionized calcium certainly plays a role in the pathogenesis of ischemic stroke by influencing the cycle of cytotoxic events that result in ischemic cell death. This study showed that the severity of ischemic stroke was greater in patients with low serum ionized calcium levels compared to patients with normal serum ionized calcium levels.PMID:36618244 | PMC:PMC9810920 | DOI:10.4103/jfmpc.jfmpc_1033_22

Intracranial Spotty Calcium Predicts Recurrent Stroke in Patients with Symptomatic Intracranial Atherosclerotic Stenosis
ConclusionIn patients with symptomatic ICAS, intracranial spotty calcium is an independent predictor of recurrent ischemic stroke, which will further facilitate risk stratification and suggest that more aggressive treatment should be considered for these patients.
