Usefulness of ultrasonographic detective flow imaging to diagnose parathyroid tumors: two case reports
J Nippon Med Sch. 2022 Oct 21. doi: 10.1272/jnms.JNMS.2023_90-604. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTParathyroid tumors (PTs) are sometimes difficult to diagnose because they are small and have a low-velocity blood flow, which can be missed by current imaging modalities. PTs consist of parathyroid adenoma (PA), parathyroid cyst, and parathyroid carcinoma (PC). Detective flow imaging (DFI) is a new imaging technology that displays a low-velocity blood flow. Herein, we report two cases in which DFI was useful for the diagnosis of PTs. One case consisted of a PA and a parathyroid cyst in close proximity, and the other was a PC. T...

The clinicopathological and prognostic significances of CDC73 expression in breast cancer: A pathological and bioinformatics analysis
Histol Histopathol. 2022 Oct 18:18534. doi: 10.14670/HH-18-534. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTParafibromin is a protein encoded by the oncosuppressor CDC73 gene, whose mutation results in hyperparathyroidism-jaw tumor syndrome (HPT-JT) and parathyroid carcinoma. Down-regulation of parafibromin is linked to lung, gastric, colorectal, and ovarian cancer tumorigenesis. Parafibromin expression was detected by RT-PCR, bioinformatics analysis, Western blot, and immunohistochemistry; and compared with clinicopathological characteristics of breast cancer. CDC73-related genes and pathways were analyzed using bioinformatics analysis...

Hyperparathyroidism Caused by Coexisting Parathyroid Hyperplasia and Unilateral Bifocal Parathyroid Carcinoma
The coexistence of parathyroid hyperplasia and carcinoma is uncommon. Here we report findings of 99mTc-sestamibi SPECT/CT study in a case of unilateral bifocal parathyroid carcinoma coexisting with parathyroid hyperplasia in a 49-year-old man. The images showed 4 foci of elevated activity around the thyroid. Histopathology confirmed the 2 lesions of the left side as parathyroid hyperplasia and the other 2 lesions of the right side as parathyroid carcinoma. (Source: Clinical Nuclear Medicine)

Diagnosis and treatment of liver metastases of parathyroid carcinoma
ConclusionsPC is a rare malignant tumor prone to recurrence and metastasis, and postoperative reviews should be carried out routinely. Abnormally elevated parathyroid hormone (PTH) and serum calcium can indicate recurrence or metastasis. Enhanced CT and MRI can provide valuable support for the diagnosis of liver metastases, but whether [18F]FDG-PET-CT, [18F]FCH-PET-CT, or [11C]choline-PET-CT can be used as a diagnostic basis requires further study. Resection of liver metastases, segmental hepatectomy, or RFA can significantly improve patients’ symptoms. (Source: Frontiers in Endocrinology)

The Clinical Features and Treatment Strategy of Parathyroid Cancer: A Retrospective Analysis
CONCLUSION: High calcium, high PTH, parathyroid occupation by ultrasound, and intraoperative invasion should be considered to have the possibility of parathyroid cancer. Open surgery is recommended and protecting tumor integration is the elementary surgery principle. The initial surgical extent should be decided by the invasion of the tumor. When PC has a local recurrence, the debulking surgery and adjuvant radiotherapy are always fake.PMID:36193301 | PMC:PMC9525777 | DOI:10.1155/2022/1913900 (Source: Biomed Res)

Treatment and outcome of metastatic parathyroid carcinoma: A systematic review and pooled analysis of published cases
ConclusionMetastatic PC has a relatively poor prognosis. The main goals of treatment are to counteract tumor growth and control hypercalcemia. Surgery of metastases is the best approach to achieve rapid control of PHPT and longer survival. Target therapies and immunotherapy deserve to be extensively tested in metastatic PC and strategies to better control hypercalcemia should be implemented. (Source: Frontiers in Oncology)
