Pandemic planning and its relevance to surgeons
This article will briefly discuss pandemic planning and it's relevance to surgeons. It will cover principally the UK response to the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-Cov-2) although will compare and contrast other diseases, and reference more general principles of major incident planning. Areas that individual surgeons and departments can, and should, influence are discussed. (Source: Surgery (Medicine Publishing))

Veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation for covid-19 in postpartum patients: 1-year outcome
During the pandemic, a significant number of patients with severe COVID-19 pneumonia required intensive care. Among these, peripartum women were particularly susceptible to severe respiratory symptoms. This complex pathophysiology involves mechanical and hormonal pathways, including the presence of lung restriction 1, modulation of the immune system by pregnancy 2, and increased oxygen demand 3. Additionally, a high level of vaccine hesitancy in this population meant that most pregnant women were not vaccinated during the COVID-19 pandemic 4. The importance of a healthy lifestyle to prevent mental health problems during crisis situations: evidence from Corona Immunitas Ticino
ConclusionThe findings support previous research that highlights the role of a healthy lifestyle, including healthy eating and physical activity, in reducing mental health problems during difficult life circumstances exacerbated by crisis situations. Age- and gender-sensitive targeted interventions promoting healthy lifestyle behaviors are thus essential. (Source: Journal of Public Health)

Continued decline in the incidence of myocardial infarction beyond the COVID-19 pandemic: a nationwide study of the Swedish population aged 60 and older during 2015 –2022
This study aims to shed light on the seemingly paradoxical relationship between COVID-19 and myocardial infarction occurrence on the population level by exploring long-term trends in incidence rates, case fatality, and proportion of patients dying before reaching a hospital. Our work is based on a linkage of administrative registers covering the entire population aged 60  + in Sweden. Considering both long-term trends since 2015 and seasonal variability, we compared observed incidence, case fatality, and proportions of patients hospitalized to expected values during 2020–2022. Despite more than 200 laboratory-confirm...

Current Progress, Challenges and Prospects in the Development of COVID-19 Vaccines
AbstractThe COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in over 772 million confirmed cases, including nearly 7 million deaths, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Leveraging rapid development, accelerated vaccine approval processes, and large-scale production of various COVID-19 vaccines using different technical platforms, the WHO declared an end to the global health emergency of COVID-19 on May 5, 2023. Current COVID-19 vaccines encompass inactivated, live attenuated, viral vector, protein subunit, nucleic acid (DNA and RNA), and virus-like particle (VLP) vaccines. However, the efficacy of these vaccines is diminishing...

Viruses, Vol. 16, Pages 655: Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Hepatitis C Treatment Initiation in British Columbia, Canada: An Interrupted Time Series Study
n Naveed Zafar Janjua We investigated the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on hepatitis C (HCV) treatment initiation, including by birth cohort and injection drug use status, in British Columbia (BC), Canada. Using population data from the BC COVID-19 Cohort, we conducted interrupted time series analyses, estimating changes in HCV treatment initiation following the introduction of pandemic-related policies in March 2020. The study included a pre-policy period (April 2018 to March 2020) and three follow-up periods (April to December 2020, January to December 2021, and January to December 2022). The level of HCV treatm...
