Impact of Coronavirus Disease 2019 Pandemic on Cardiac Arrest and Emergency Care
The incidence of both out-of-hospital and in-hospital cardiac arrest increased during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Patient survival and neurologic outcome after both out-of-hospital and in-hospital cardiac arrest were reduced. Direct effects of the COVID-19 illness combined with indirect effects of the pandemic on patient ’s behavior and health care systems contributed to these changes. Understanding the potential factors offers the opportunity to improve future response and save lives. (Source: Cardiology Clinics)

Cognitive processing therapy (CPT) versus individual drug counseling (IDC) for PTSD for veterans with opioid use disorder maintained on buprenorphine
CONCLUSIONS: Veterans with OUD and PTSD can safely and effectively participate in evidence-based therapy for PTSD; further work should confirm that trauma-focused treatment may be more effective in leading to sustained remission of PTSD symptoms than drug counseling.SCIENTIFIC SIGNIFICANCE: This is the first study to evaluate CPT for PTSD in the context of buprenorphine treatment for OUD.PMID:38624259 | DOI:10.1111/ajad.13557 (Source: American Journal on Addictions)

Comparative Analysis of Clinical Outcomes Using Propensity Score Matching: Coronavirus Disease 2019 vs. Seasonal Influenza in Korea
CONCLUSION: The omicron group did not demonstrate better clinical outcomes than the pre-omicron group, and exhibited significant disease severity compared to the influenza group. Considering the likely persistence of COVID-19 infections, it is imperative to sustain comprehensive studies and ongoing policy support for the virus to enhance the prognosis for individuals affected by COVID-19.PMID:38622937 | PMC:PMC11018986 | DOI:10.3346/jkms.2024.39.e128 (Source: Journal of Korean Medical Science)

30 Years of Recovery: Perspectives From an Aging Revolutionary
Community Ment Health J. 2024 Apr 16. doi: 10.1007/s10597-024-01276-5. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMark Ragins, award-winning past medical director of the MHALA Village and long-term Recovery Movement leader reflects upon the progress and disappointments of the last 30 years developing and promoting recovery. He describes the Recovery Model as a true "Thomas Kuhn" revolution built on three paradigm shifts (from illness-centered to person-centered, from professionally-driven to client-driven, and from deficit-based to strengths-based). Since it has always been an outsider movement, it has grown up in isolated "bubbles". D...

Facilitating and Hindering Factors in the Implementation of Medical Rehabilitation of Adolescents with Scoliosis before and during the SARS-CoV-2 Pandemic: A Qualitative Study
CONCLUSION: For successful rehabilitation during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, depending on weather conditions, therapy should be outside, as there is no need to wear mouth-nose protection outdoors. In addition, the physiotherapeutic treatment (Schroth therapy) should be carried out without mask due to the intensity of the exercise. Social contacts among all adolescents should be supported as much as possible. The leisure activities should provide a wide choice and enough free places. Continuation of certain hygienic measures could help to reduce the incidence of illnesses (e. g., gastrointestinal infections) in the future. The...

Impact of COVID-19 restrictions on self-poisoning behaviour with mild analgesics in Danish youth
CONCLUSION: These findings indicate that the restrictions enforced during the second lockdown greatly impacted youth mental health, especially girls, leading to an 85% increase in self-poisonings. We hope for increased awareness of mental health in children and adolescents during possible future lockdowns.PMID:38625374 | DOI:10.1080/08039488.2024.2339433 (Source: Nordic Journal of Psychiatry)

Opioid use disorder in pediatric populations: considerations for perioperative pain management and precision opioid analgesia
Expert Rev Clin Pharmacol. 2024 Apr 16. doi: 10.1080/17512433.2024.2343915. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION: Opioids are commonly used for perioperative analgesia, yet children still suffer high rates of severe post-surgical pain and opioid-related adverse effects. Persistent and severe acute surgical pain greatly increases the child's chances of chronic surgical pain, long-term opioid use, and opioid use disorder.AREAS COVERED: Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols, are often inadequate in treating a child's severe surgical pain. Research suggests that 'older' and longer-acting opioids such as methad...

Health and sociodemographic determinants of excess mortality in Spanish nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic: a  2-year prospective longitudinal study
CONCLUSION: Almost half of this sample of nursing home residents died in the 2‑year period, and one fifth were attributed to COVID-19. Functional impairment was a risk factor for overall mortality and COVID-19 mortality, independent of age and risk of sarcopenia.PMID:38625391 | DOI:10.1007/s00391-024-02294-4 (Source: Zeitschrift fur Gerontologie und Geriatrie)

Assessment of the impact of the vaccine pass policy on COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy and uptake among Chinese adults in Hong Kong
CONCLUSION: Vaccine uptake in older adults was observed to have increased by a greater extent after the policy annoucement and implementation, under the contextual changes during and after a large Omicron wave with high mortality in Hong Kong in early 2022. Since the policy withdrawal the uptake of further booster doses has been very low in all ages. We suggest that improving voluntary booster uptake in older adults should be prioritized.PMID:38627146 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2024.04.035 (Source: Vaccine)
