Sleep quality and screen time among university professors: impact of emergency remote teaching amidst COVID-19 crisis
CONCLUSION: This study among university professors underscores the impact of screen time on sleep quality during the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants faced poor sleep, largely influenced by heightened screen time due to ERT. Considering these findings, this study emphasizes the importance of curbing daytime screen exposure and abstaining from screens in the evening, especially for university professors reliant on technology for their professional responsibilities.PMID:38632182 | DOI:10.1007/s11325-024-03030-3 (Source: Sleep and Breathing)

A comprehensive examination of temporal-seasonal variations of PM < sub > 1.0 < /sub > and PM < sub > 2.5 < /sub > in taiwan before and during the COVID-19 lockdown
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2024 Apr 18. doi: 10.1007/s11356-024-33174-4. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCOVID-19 has been a significant global concern due to its contagious nature. In May 2021, Taiwan experienced a severe outbreak, leading the government to enforce strict Pandemic Alert Level 3 restrictions in order to curtail its spread. Although previous studies in Taiwan have examined the effects of these measures on air quality, further research is required to compare different time periods and assess the health implications of reducing particulate matter during the Level 3 lockdown. Herein, we analyzed the mass concen...

Strategies that enabled access to chronic care during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond in South Africa
CONCLUSION: The findings of this study revealed a range of effective and noteworthy approaches that facilitated access to treatment and continuity of care. As a result, enhancing telemedicine as well as structural systems such as appointment scheduling, decanting choices, mobile and medication home delivery can improve access to care and treatment.CONTRIBUTION: The burden of disease and avoidable death will be eventually addressed by maximising the use of telemedicine and sustaining the new norm of ongoing care through digital and remote care and decanting strategies.PMID:38628228 | PMC:PMC11019043 | DOI:10.4102/hsag.v29i0...

Epidemiology and antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of Enterobacterales causing bloodstream infections before and during COVID-19 pandemic: Results of the Study for Monitoring Antimicrobial Resistance Trends (SMART) in Taiwan, 2018-2021
CONCLUSIONS: The COVID-19 pandemic appears to be associated with a general decrease in antimicrobial susceptibility rates among Enterobacterales causing BSIs in Taiwan. Continuous surveillance is crucial to monitor antimicrobial resistance during the pandemic and in the future.PMID:38632023 | DOI:10.1016/j.jmii.2024.04.004 (Source: Journal of Microbiology, Immunology, and Infection)

The Impact of COVID-19 on Grief: A Quantitative and Qualitative Analysis in Italy
Omega (Westport). 2024 Apr 17:302228241248534. doi: 10.1177/00302228241248534. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis mixed-method research study delves into the repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic on loss and mental health in Italy. The analysis uncovers a significant correlation between COVID-19 fear and heightened anxiety, depression, and stress, exacerbated by social isolation and misinformation. The loss of loved ones during the pandemic intensifies distress, with 28% showing signs of prolonged disorder and 22.8% displaying maladaptive grief symptoms. Distress persists across pandemic phases (59.3% critical, 54.9% inte...

Early pandemic in-hospital outcomes and mortality risk factors in COVID-19 solid organ transplant patients
CONCLUSION: In this nationally representative sample, SOT patients presenting with COVID-19 experienced similar rates of mortality compared to those without SOT. SOT patients were more likely to develop acute kidney injury. Further research is needed to understand the complex relationship between transplant patient outcomes and COVID-19.PMID:38628349 | PMC:PMC11018036 | DOI:10.1080/08998280.2024.2325310 (Source: Baylor University Medical Center Proceedings)

An analysis of retracted COVID-19 articles published by one medical publisher with multiple journals
CONCLUSION: Analysis of the titles and abstracts of the articles suggests that their removal from the medical literature would have limited effects on the near-term management decisions during the COVID-19 pandemic. Nevertheless, retraction of medical articles creates uncertainty in medical care and science and in the public regarding the validity of medical research and related publications and the level of professionalism of the individuals submitting these articles.PMID:38628334 | PMC:PMC11018089 | DOI:10.1080/08998280.2024.2313333 (Source: Baylor University Medical Center Proceedings)

Peripartal COVID-19-Related Restrictions and Psychological Burden - A Quantitative Survey in Austria
CONCLUSIONS: The pandemic-related restrictions led to anxiety, worry, loneliness and an increased risk of depression during the peripartum period. The balance of mental health was negatively affected by measures and restrictions. Even in times of pandemic, more attention needs to be paid to the vulnerable peripartum period.PMID:38631376 | DOI:10.1055/a-2293-2203 (Source: Zeitschrift fur Geburtshilfe und Neonatologie)

The COVID-19 Lived Experience Through the Eyes of Nursing and Social Work Students
Conclusions: Participants indicated that the COVID-19 pandemic negatively impacted educational delivery, limiting learning opportunities and increasing feelings of isolation, stress, and anxiety. Implications for Education and the Future Workforce: Projected health-care workforce shortages may be exacerbated by students departing from the health-care professions as a result of increased burnout. Resilience training while in school is necessary to help promote coping, self-care strategies, and retention in the health-care professions.PMID:38629129 | DOI:10.1177/10784535241247093 (Source: Creative Nursing)

COVID-19 vaccination communication: Effects of vaccine conspiracy beliefs and message framing among black and white participants
CONCLUSION: It is crucial for health officials to work to find effective media message strategies to combat COVID-19 vaccine conspiracy theories and misinformation. Furthermore, this study supports the significance of health organizations' ongoing efforts to tailor public health messaging to specific racial groups, as evidenced by considerable variations in perceptions among Black and White Americans.PMID:38631951 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2024.04.001 (Source: Vaccine)
