Religiosity of Latinas Living in the USA Curbs Depression and Anxiety During the COVID-19 Pandemic
AbstractThis mixed-methods study was conducted to explore the role of faith in mental health among Latino women (Latinas) during the COVID-19 pandemic. As part of a lifestyle study, surveys were administered to 89 participants during the 1st year of the pandemic. Specifically, a focus group was conducted with participants (n = 6) directly affected by COVID-19 (i.e., self or family member). The results showed inverse correlations between religiosity and both depression and anxiety, as well as positive correlations among religious practices, religious coping, and religiosity. Given these associations, future interven tio...

Advance care planning in the treatment of implantable left ventricular assist device: a republication of the review published in Japanese Journal of Artificial Organs
AbstractAdvance care planning (ACP) is essential in managing serious and chronic illnesses to ensure that patients receive care aligned with their personal values, goals, and preferences. This review focuses on integrating ACP in the treatment of patients receiving implantable left ventricular assist devices (VADs). The heart failure palliative care team developed a unique advance directive form and pamphlet to facilitate ACP discussions, emphasizing not only medical treatment preferences but also patients ’ values and life goals. The study highlights the distinction between bridge to transplantation (BTT) and destination...

Molecules, Vol. 29, Pages 1776: The Development of Aptamer-Based Gold Nanoparticle Lateral Flow Test Strips for the Detection of SARS-CoV-2 S Proteins on the Surface of Cold-Chain Food Packaging
In this study, an aptamer-based colloidal gold nanoparticle lateral flow test strip was well developed to realize the visual detection of wild-type SARS-CoV-2 spike proteins (SPs) and multiple variants. Under the optimal reaction conditions, a low detection limit of SARS-CoV-2 S proteins of 0.68 nM was acquired, and the actual detection recovery was 83.3% to 108.8% for real-world samples. This suggests a potential tool for the prompt detection of SARS-CoV-2 with good sensitivity and accuracy, and a new method for the development of alternative antibody test strips for the detection of other viral targets. Factors Contributing to Telemedicine Efficacy in Pediatric Urology
Despite swift implementation of telemedicine with the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, there is a paucity of research on its use for management of pediatric urology patients. Specifically, there is limited knowledge and inconsistent data on the effectiveness of telemedicine for various pediatric urologic conditions. Our aim was to evaluate the efficacy of pediatric urological care provided via video visits (VVs) at a large tertiary care children ’s hospital. (Source: Journal of Pediatric Urology)

Integrative Approach to Maxillary Reconstruction: Assessment of Proficiency of Zygomatic and 3D-Manufactured Patient-Specific Implants in Mucormycosis Post-COVID-19
ConclusionThe study concludes that the integration of patient-specific implant systems with zygomatic implants offers a promising therapeutic approach for maxillary reconstruction post-mucormycosis secondary to COVID-19. However, further research with larger sample sizes and extended follow-up periods is warranted to validate these findings. (Source: Journal of Maxillofacial and Oral Surgery)

Climate emergency and decent work
The climate crisis and loss of biodiversity, two closely related threats to human and planetary health, meet the criteria for the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare an international public health emergency, as occurred with COVID-19 (1), and urged by numerous scientific journals (2). Attaining decent work, understood as “opportunities for women and men to work in conditions of freedom, equity, security and human dignity” (3), in the context of the climate emergency, creates a paradox for worker health. Outdoor workers (notably those in agriculture and construction), many of them informal workers, are among th...

Acceptance of a Future Gonorrhea Vaccine in a Post-Coronavirus Disease 2019 World: Impact of Type of Recommendation and Changing Levels of Trust in Health Institutions and Authorities
Med Clin North Am. 2023 Nov;107(6S):e19-e37. doi: 10.1016/j.mcna.2023.06.010. Epub 2023 Jun 13.ABSTRACTWidespread uptake of a future gonorrhea vaccine could decrease the burden of disease and limit the spread of antibiotic resistance. However, gonorrhea vaccination will occur in the backdrop of the roll-out of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccine, which could have influenced parental perceptions about other, non-COVID-19 vaccines. In an internet-based cross-sectional survey, 74% of parents would get a gonorrhea vaccine for their child, and this was higher among those whose trust in pharmaceutical companies incre...

Heart failure, the global pandemic: A call to action consensus statement from the global presidential conclave at the platinum jubilee conference of cardiological society of India 2023
Indian Heart J. 2024 Apr 10:S0019-4832(24)00057-9. doi: 10.1016/j.ihj.2024.04.004. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHeart failure (HF) is emerging as a major public health problem both in high- and low - income countries. The mortality and morbidity due to HF is substantially higher in low-middle income countries (LMICs). Accessibility, availability and affordability issues affect the guideline directed therapy implementation in HF care in those countries. This call to action urges all those concerned to initiate preventive strategies as early as possible, so that we can reduce HF-related morbidity and mortality. The most imp...
