Buprenorphine Affects the Initiation and Severity of Interleukin Induced Acute Pancreatitis in Mice
Am J Physiol Gastrointest Liver Physiol. 2024 Apr 23. doi: 10.1152/ajpgi.00083.2024. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAcute pancreatitis (AP) is a common disease with no targeted therapy and has varied outcomes ranging from spontaneous resolution to being lethal. While typically painful, AP can also be painless. Various agents, including opioids are used for pain control in AP; the risks, and benefits of which are often debated. Since experimental AP in mice is used to study the efficacy of potential therapies, we studied the effect of a commonly used opioid buprenorphine on the initiation and progression of AP. For this we a...

DNA damage, obesity and obesity-related health complications: what are new data telling us?
This article surveys new data that support these contentions.RECENT FINDINGS: Whole exome sequencing analyses have identified rare variants linked to high BMI and adiposity. Two of the identified genes are linked to DNA damage and DNA repair, suggesting that DNA damage itself may play a role in the cause of obesity. It has also been recognized that obesity increases DNA damage in breast tissue of carriers of BRCA mutations and rates of tumour formation in BRCA1+ mice, indicating effect of obesity on cancer development in high-risk populations. In addition, obesity promotes cancer cell chemoresistance by decreasing fatty ac...

Reliability and validity of rapid assessment tools for measuring 24-hour movement behaviours in children aged 0-5 years: the Movement Behaviour Questionnaire Baby (MBQ-B) and child (MBQ-C)
CONCLUSIONS: The MBQ-B and MBQ-C are valid and reliable rapid assessment tools for assessing 24-hour movement behaviours in infants, toddlers, and pre-schoolers. Both the open- and closed-ended versions of the MBQ are suitable for research conducted for policy and practice purposes, including the evaluation of scaled-up early obesity prevention programs.PMID:38654342 | DOI:10.1186/s12966-024-01596-5 (Source: Health Physics)

The link between obesity and the gut microbiota and immune system in early-life
Crit Rev Microbiol. 2024 Apr 23:1-21. doi: 10.1080/1040841X.2024.2342427. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn early-life, the gut microbiota is highly modifiable, being modulated by external factors such as maternal microbiota, mode of delivery, and feeding strategies. The composition of the child's gut microbiota will deeply impact the development and maturation of its immune system, with consequences for future health. As one of the main sources of microorganisms to the child, the mother represents a crucial factor in the establishment of early-life microbiota, impacting the infant's wellbeing. Recent studies have proposed ...

SWATH-MS reveals that Bisphenol A and its analogs regulate pathways leading to disruption in Insulin signaling and fatty acid metabolism
This study has important implications in addressing health concerns related to EDCs. Given that the analogs of BPA are considered alternatives to BPA, the findings of this study suggest they are equally potent in altering fatty acid metabolism and inducing insulin resistance.PMID:38653447 | DOI:10.1016/j.fct.2024.114667 (Source: Food and Chemical Toxicology)

Hedonic hunger, eating behavior, and food reward and preferences 1 year after initial weight loss by diet or bariatric surgery
CONCLUSIONS: Continued WL with bariatric surgery is paralleled by favorable changes in eating behavior and food reward and preferences. By contrast, controls experienced weight regain at 1Y follow-up and no changes in eating behavior. These striking differences are likely to be important in the long-term WL management of individuals with severe obesity.PMID:38653583 | DOI:10.1002/oby.24021 (Source: Obesity)

Overweight/obesity, gestational weight gain, postpartum weight retention, and maternal/neonatal complications in the military
CONCLUSIONS: Excessive GWG is frequent among TRICARE beneficiaries, particularly active-duty personnel, and is strongly associated with costly maternal/neonatal complications. Substantial PPWR is also common in this population, with excessive GWG as a key risk factor.PMID:38650523 | DOI:10.1002/oby.24016 (Source: Obesity)

Conservative Versus Operative Treatment of Proximal Humerus Fractures in Older Individuals —an Analysis of Insurance Data
CONCLUSION: The conservative treatment of proximal humerus fracture is associated with a lower overall rate of complications due to surgery or trauma, but also with more MAE and TE and higher overall mortality. These findings underline the need for individualized and risk-adjusted treatment recommendations.PMID:38652842 | DOI:10.3238/arztebl.m2024.0059 (Source: Deutsches Arzteblatt International)

Detection of significant liver fibrosis in Chinese psoriasis patients receiving methotrexate: a comparison between transient elastography and liver histology
CONCLUSION: Transient elastography is reliable and superior to the TCD for detecting liver fibrosis in Chinese psoriasis patients receiving MTX. The associations of fatty acids related dietary patterns with overweight and obesity among Chinese children
CONCLUSION: Four FAs related dietary patterns were identified. The dietary pattern with high intake of fish, shrimp, crab and shellfish decreased overweight risk by increasing n-3 PUFAs, and decreasing SFAs. The dietary pattern with high intake of plant food, decreased obesity risk by providing an balanced n-6/n-3 PUFAs ratio.PMID:38654346 | DOI:10.1186/s41043-024-00549-9 (Source: Journal of Health, Population, and Nutrition)

Disparities in Access to Bariatric Surgery in North Carolina
This study sought to identify factors that contribute to disparities in access to bariatric surgery in North Carolina (NC).METHODS: Using the rate of bariatric surgery in the county with the best health outcome as the reference, we calculated the Surgical Equity Index (SEI) in the remaining counties in NC.RESULTS: Approximately 2.95 million individuals (29%) were obese in NC. There were 992 (.5%) bariatric procedures performed on a population of 194 209 individuals with obesity in the Reference County (RC). The mean SEI for bariatric surgery in NC was .47 (SD .17, range .15-.95). A statistically significant difference was ...
