Association of obesity and menarche SNPs and interaction with environmental factors on precocious puberty
CONCLUSIONS: The obesity risk gene polymorphisms MC4R rs571312 and rs12970134 were associated with precocious puberty in Chinese girls with obesity, and girls with risk genotypes and high socioeconomic status should be given extra attention.IMPACT: This is the first study that identified the association between rs571312 and rs12970134 of MC4R gene and precocious puberty in Chinese children. We found that when girls were in the high socioeconomic status, the risk genotypes of rs571312 and rs12970134 had a greater effect on precocious puberty. The results of this study have great public health implications. It is recommended...

Elevated serum irisin levels in boys with central precocious puberty independent of BMI
CONCLUSIONS: Serum irisin levels correlate with BMI and pubertal development. Given its limited sensitivity, irisin level can only be utilised as a supplementary rather than a standalone diagnostic indicator for CPP.PMID:38646987 | DOI:10.5603/ep.98509 (Source: Endokrynologia Polska)

Circulating levels of irisin and Meteorin-like protein in PCOS and its correlation with metabolic parameters
CONCLUSIONS: Although irisin seems to be a promising biomarker, inconsistent research limits its value in clinical use in the assessment or treatment of obesity. Metrnl level was not affected in the study population, but it might be connected to the severity of metabolic disturbances.PMID:38646985 | DOI:10.5603/ep.99111 (Source: Endokrynologia Polska)

Glycaemic control among adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus in the Gulf Cooperation Council countries: an updated review
Endokrynol Pol. 2024 Apr 22. doi: 10.5603/ep.99519. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTType 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has become a major public health concern, causing significant disability and death worldwide. Fuelled by a modern sedentary lifestyle and poor dietary practices, T2DM affects at least 10.5% of the world's population. This paper seeks to review the progress made by the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries (Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates) in addressing T2DM, focusing on glycaemic control proportions and comparing it with the 2015 review. The results indicate no signif...

The impact of excessive maternal weight on the risk of neuropsychiatric disorders in offspring-a narrative review of clinical studies
Pharmacol Rep. 2024 Apr 22. doi: 10.1007/s43440-024-00598-1. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe global prevalence of overweight and obesity is a significant public health concern that also largely affects women of childbearing age. Human epidemiological studies indicate that prenatal exposure to excessive maternal weight or excessive gestational weight gain is linked to various neurodevelopmental disorders in children, including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism spectrum disorder, internalizing and externalizing problems, schizophrenia, and cognitive/intellectual impairment. Considering that inadequate matern...

Clinical practice guidelines for diagnostic and treatment of the chronic heart failure
Arch Cardiol Mex. 2024;94(Supl 1):1-74. doi: 10.24875/ACM.M24000095.ABSTRACTChronic heart failure continues to be one of the main causes of impairment in the functioning and quality of life of people who suffer from it, as well as one of the main causes of mortality in our country and around the world. Mexico has a high prevalence of risk factors for developing heart failure, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity, which makes it essential to have an evidence-based document that provides recommendations to health professionals involved in the diagnosis and treatment of these patients. This document establishes ...

Renal Function Improvement With Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonist in a Patient With Type 2 Diabetes
J Med Cases. 2024 Apr;15(2-3):37-42. doi: 10.14740/jmc4189. Epub 2024 Apr 8.ABSTRACTDiabetic kidney disease (DKD) includes hypertensive nephrosclerosis, aging, obesity, and atherosclerosis-related renal diseases, in addition to classical diabetic nephropathy. Sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2is) have been approved for diabetic and non-diabetic patients at risk of chronic kidney disease progression. As the main mechanism for SGLT2i-mediated improvement of renal function, the normalization of tubulo-glomerular feedback (TGF) has been proposed. Enhanced TGF and resulting glomerular hypertension are observed in...

Effect of overweight/obesity on relationship between fractional exhaled nitric oxide and airway hyperresponsiveness in Chinese elderly patients with asthma
Conclusion: The elderly Chinese Han asthmatics with overweight/obesity had lower FeNO levels than those with non-obese according to our findings. In addition, the FeNO level was inversely correlated between FeNO levels and PC20 in elderly asthmatics.PMID:38649141 | DOI:10.1177/03946320241246713 (Source: International Journal of Immunopathology and Pharmacology)

Increased cancer incidence among patients with hidradenitis suppurativa - a Danish nationwide register study 1977-2017
Acta Oncol. 2024 Apr 21;63:220-228. doi: 10.2340/1651-226X.2024.26182.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: The chronic, inflammatory skin disease hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) (prevalence: 0.5%-1%, diagnostic delay: 7-10 years) primarily arises in younger adults and frequently coincides with autoimmune comorbidities and unhealthy life-styles (smoking and obesity). These factors are known to increase cancer risk, but despite this, information on cancer occurrence among HS patients is scarce.MATERIALS AND METHODS: A nationwide retrospective register-based study assessing relative risk of cancer - overall and by anatomical site - following HS...

The tumour ‐derived extracellular vesicle proteome varies by endometrial cancer histology and is confounded by an obesogenic environment
AbstractEndometrial cancer, the most common gynaecological cancer worldwide, is closely linked to obesity and metabolic diseases, particularly in younger women. New circulating biomarkers have the potential to improve diagnosis and treatment selections, which could significantly improve outcomes. Our approach focuses on extracellular vesicle (EV) biomarker discovery by directly profiling the proteome of EVs enriched from frozen biobanked endometrial tumours. We analysed nine tissue samples to compare three clinical subgroups —low BMI (Body Mass Index) Endometrioid, high BMI Endometrioid, and Serous (any BMI)—identifyin...
