The relationship between sarcopenic obesity and changes in quadriceps muscle thickness and echo intensity in patients with stroke
CONCLUSIONS: Post-stroke sarcopenic obesity was independently associated with quantitative and qualitative changes in skeletal muscles on both the paretic and non-paretic sides.PMID:38590086 | DOI:10.1080/10749357.2024.2340369 (Source: Topics in Stroke Rehabilitation)

Excess weight, weight gain, and prostate cancer risk and prognosis: the PROCA-life study
Acta Oncol. 2024 Apr 9;63:154-163. doi: 10.2340/1651-226X.2024.32953.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Studies of excess weight and weight changes throughout adult life for prostate cancer (PCa) risk and prognosis have shown inconsistent results.METHODS: In a population-based cohort, the Prostate Cancer Study throughout life (PROCA-life), 16,960 healthy men from the prospective cohort Tromsø Study (1994-2016) were included. Body mass index (BMI) and weight were measured at all four attendings, and weight change was calculated as the difference between the first and last of either Tromsø4, Tromsø5 or Tromsø6. Overall, 904 men develop...

Obesity and male fertility disorders
Mol Aspects Med. 2024 Apr 8;97:101273. doi: 10.1016/j.mam.2024.101273. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOften associated with obesity, male infertility represents a widespread condition that challenges the wellbeing of the couple. In this article, we provide a comprehensive and critical analysis of studies exploring the association between obesity and male reproductive function, to evaluate the frequency of this association, and establish the effects of increased body weight on conventional and biofunctional sperm parameters and infertility. In an attempt to find possible molecular markers of infertility in obese male patient...

Salivary testosterone changes during oral glucose tolerance tests in overweight and obese men - postprandial or circadian variation?
CONCLUSIONS: SalT decreased postprandially. A concomitant decrease in serum cortisol, prolactin and TSH reflecting diurnal variation offers an alternative explanation for the decrease in SalT independent of food consumption. Further studies are required to determine whether morning temporal changes in SalT are related to food consumption or circadian rhythm or both.PMID:38591370 | DOI:10.1177/00045632241249087 (Source: Clinical Biochemistry)

Case-control study of heart rate variability and sleep apnea in childhood sickle cell disease
In conclusion, while the decrease in sympathetic modulation in control children may contribute to increasing pharyngeal compliance, its decrease seems protective in children with sickle cell disease, which underlines the specificity of OSAS pathophysiology in SCD that could be due to sickle cell disease related smooth muscle dystonia.PMID:38590226 | DOI:10.1111/jsr.14209 (Source: Journal of Sleep Research)

Interleukin-6 promotes visceral adipose tissue accumulation during aging via inhibiting fat lipolysis
CONCLUSION: Our findings identify a detrimental role of IL-6 during the aging process by promoting visceral adipose tissue accumulation through inhibition of lipolysis. Therefore, strategies aimed at preventing or reducing IL-6 levels may potentially ameliorate age-related obesity and improve metabolism during aging.PMID:38593501 | DOI:10.1016/j.intimp.2024.111906 (Source: International Immunopharmacology)

Factors Associated With Physical Inactivity of Recipients of a Kidney Transplant: Results From the ADHERE BRAZIL Multicenter Study
CONCLUSIONS: This study identified factors associated with physical inactivity after kidney transplantation that may guide future multilevel behavioral change interventions for physical activity.IMPACT: In a multicenter sample of recipients of a kidney transplant with a prevalence of physical inactivity of 69%, we found associations between this behavior and patient- and center-level factors. At the patient level, the chance of physical inactivity was positively associated with smoking, obesity, and patient morbidity (peripheral vascular disease and hospitalization events after kidney transplantation). Conversely, a high f...

Short-term effects of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass or gastric sleeve on bone mineral density and calciotropic hormones: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Surg Obes Relat Dis. 2024 Mar 12:S1550-7289(24)00114-X. doi: 10.1016/j.soard.2024.03.007. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRoux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) and gastric sleeve (GS) have been associated with significant reductions in bone mineral density (BMD) and fluctuations in serum levels of calciotropic hormones. These changes pose a risk to bone health. The study assessed the short-term (12 and 24 months) effects of RYGB and GS on BMD and calciotropic hormones. PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases were searched. Analyses considered follow-up (12 and 24 months) with BMD as main outcome at three sites (femoral neck...

The feasibility and outcomes of metabolic and bariatric surgery prior to neoplastic therapy
CONCLUSIONS: This study highlights the potential feasibility of employing MBS prior to neoplastic therapy in patients with low-grade, less aggressive neoplasms in the context of obesity. This underscores the importance of providing a personalized, case-to-case multidisciplinary approach in the management of these patients.PMID:38594091 | DOI:10.1016/j.soard.2024.02.008 (Source: Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases : official journal of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery)
