High Fat Diet –Wheat Gliadin Interaction and its Implication for Obesity and Celiac Disease Onset: In Vivo Studies
Wheat gluten may play a role for development of life-style related diseases in populations on a high fat diet. Mice feed high fat diet show that wheat gliadin consumption affects glucose and lipid metabolic homeostasis, alters the gut microbiota and the immune cell profile in liver. AbstractThe intestinal immune system plays a crucial role in obesity and insulin resistance. An altered intestinal immunity is associated with changes to the gut microbiota, barrier function, and tolerance to luminal antigens. Lipid metabolism and its unbalance can also contribute to acute and chronic inflammation in different conditions. In ce...

IJERPH, Vol. 21, Pages 500: Cognitive Profile and Cardiovascular Risk Factors in Older Adults with Mild Cognitive Impairment
The DIALCAT Consortium The prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors (CVRFs) in the older adults population and their specific impact on their cognitive profiles still requires further research. For this purpose, a cross-sectional study was carried out to describe the presence of CVRFs and their association with cognitive performance in a sample of older adults (65–85 years old) with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). Participants (n = 185) were divided into three groups concerning their cardiovascular risk level determined by the presence of different CVRFs, including Type 2 Diabetes (T2D), dyslipidemia,...

Validity of self-reported weight and height among female young adults in the United Arab Emirates
This study aims to compare self-reported weight and height with measured values among young female adults in the United Arab Emirates. A cross-sectional study of 131 female university students aged 17–27 reported their weight and height on a self-administere d questionnaire and on the same day had their height and weight measured. Body Mass Index (BMI) values of both self-reported and measured weight and height were calculated and categorized according to the World Health Organization’s cut-off points. Overall, 87% of students had a resultant self-rep orted BMI value within their actual BMI category. The mean differenc...

The Obesity Paradox Exists for Perioperative Complications and Mortality Following Lower Extremity Arterial Bypass Surgery
The obesity paradox refers to a phenomenon by which obese individuals experience lower risk of mortality and even protective associations from chronic disease sequelae when compared to the non-obese and underweight population. Prior literature has demonstrated an obesity paradox after cardiac and other surgical procedures. However, the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and perioperative complications for patients undergoing major open lower extremity arterial revascularization is unclear. Early results of eTEP access surgery with preperitoneal repair of primary midline ventral hernias and diastasis recti. A 33 patient case series of “PeTEP”
ConclusionsWe believe the preperitoneal eTEP approach for small to medium primary midline hernias is an effective and solid repair that combines excellent features of proven surgical techniques and eliminates the need for posterior rectus sheath division while saving the retrorectus space, among other benefits that will be discussed. The reproducibility of the technique remains to be proven. (Source: Surgical Endoscopy)

Leptin and ghrelin dynamics: unraveling their influence on food intake, energy balance, and the pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes mellitus
ConclusionGhrelin, known for its appetite-stimulating effects, and leptin, a hormone involved in the regulation of energy balance, have been implicated in insulin resistance and glucose metabolism. Understanding the complexities of ghrelin and leptin interactions in the context of T2DM may offer insights into novel therapeutic strategies for this prevalent metabolic disorder. Further research is warranted to elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying these hormone actions and to explore their clinical implications for T2DM prevention and management.
