Hypovitaminosis D and hyperparathyroidism: a 5-year postoperative follow-up of 30,458 gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy patients
CONCLUSIONS: Previous studies alongside these results suggest that RYGB, more so than SG, may cause hypovitaminosis D and thereby hyperparathyroidism, which could lead to osteopenia. The threshold for 25-OH-D should be >75 nmol/L, and despite higher levels, current vitamin D supplementation may not be sufficient. Follow-up should include screening for hyperparathyroidism and hypovitaminosis D.PMID:38614927 | DOI:10.1016/j.soard.2024.02.004 (Source: Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases : official journal of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery)

SESSAMO, follow-up of secondary students to assess mental health and obesity: a cohort study
Gac Sanit. 2024 Apr 12;38:102385. doi: 10.1016/j.gaceta.2024.102385. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDuring last decades, a departure from health-related lifestyles has been observed among adolescents. Evidence reports that healthy lifestyles could be predictors of better mental health status. The aims of the SESSAMO Project are: 1) to assess the association between lifestyles and physical and mental health; 2) to assess how self-concept and stressful life events can modulate these associations; and 3) to establish the role of social determinants in the lifestyle and in adolescents' health. The SESSAMO Project is a prospecti...

Accelerated Aging Induced by an Unhealthy High-Fat Diet: Initial Evidence for the Role of Nrf2 Deficiency and Impaired Stress Resilience in Cellular Senescence
Nutrients. 2024 Mar 26;16(7):952. doi: 10.3390/nu16070952.ABSTRACTHigh-fat diets (HFDs) have pervaded modern dietary habits, characterized by their excessive saturated fat content and low nutritional value. Epidemiological studies have compellingly linked HFD consumption to obesity and the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Moreover, the synergistic interplay of HFD, obesity, and diabetes expedites the aging process and prematurely fosters age-related diseases. However, the underlying mechanisms driving these associations remain enigmatic. One of the most conspicuous hallmarks of aging is the accumulation of highly i...

Perceptions of an acceptance ‐based weight management treatment among adults living in rural areas
SummaryObesity and obesity-related comorbidities disproportionately affect rural communities. Research has emerged in support of a novel acceptance-based behavioural weight management treatment (ABT) that integrates the principles and procedures of acceptance-commitment therapy (ACT) with traditional components of standard behavioural treatment (SBT). The current study assessed the perceptions of community stakeholders in rural areas to session materials of a commercially available ABT program. Surveys and focus groups were used to solicit feedback from three former interventionists with experience delivering SBTs in rural...

Breastfeeding and pre-pregnancy bariatric surgery: A scoping review
Bariatric surgery is a procedure for people with class II and III obesity who are unable to lose weight using traditional methods. The incidence rate of bariatric surgery in reproductive-age women is increasing rapidly, so the number of women who become pregnant after bariatric surgery is rising. (Source: Women and Birth)
