Cardiovascular Risk Factors Among First-Degree Relatives of Patients with Premature Cardiovascular Disease in Malta. Baseline Findings from the CRISO Project
CONCLUSION: This study determined the prevalence of lifestyle, biochemical, physiological, and anthropometric cardiovascular risk factors among asymptomatic first-degree relatives of Maltese patients with premature ASCVD. First-degree relatives had considerable prevalences of an underactive lifestyle, hypertension, and obesity, suggesting better screening and early risk factor intervention are needed to modify their risk of ASCVD.PMID:38616927 | PMC:PMC11015845 | DOI:10.2147/VHRM.S449672 (Source: Atherosclerosis)

Relationship Between Obesity and Youth Athletes' Physical Activity and Exercise-Related Cardiac Symptoms
Conclusions: In this dataset, obesity in youth athletes is associated with decreased physical activity and increased exertional symptoms in general. Obesity is not associated with exertional symptoms in athletes who participated in higher weekly physical activity. Further studies are needed to elucidate the cause-effect relationship of these findings.PMID:38621158 | DOI:10.1089/chi.2023.0194 (Source: Childhood Obesity)

The characterization and comorbidities of heterozygous Bardet-Biedl syndrome carriers
Conclusion: We found that aside from the association with overweight and obesity, heterozygous BBS mutations did not appear to increase the predisposition of individuals to comorbidities and metabolic diseases. To gain a more comprehensive understanding of the genetic susceptibility associated with Bardet-Biedl Syndrome (BBS), further research is warranted.PMID:38617006 | PMC:PMC11008491 | DOI:10.7150/ijms.92766 (Source: International Journal of Medical Sciences)

Depression risk in chronic tonsillitis patients underwent tonsillectomy: a global federated health network analysis
Conclusion: This real-world analysis found tonsillectomy was associated with a 30% higher 5-year depression risk versus matched non-tonsillectomy patients with chronic tonsillitis. Further mechanistic research is needed to clarify the pathophysiologic association between depression and tonsillectomy. Depression is not commonly mentioned in the current post-tonsillectomy care realm; however, the outcome of our study emphasized the possibility of these suffering condition after operation. Attention to psychological impacts following tonsillectomy is warranted to support patient well-being, leading to better management of pos...

Interindividual differences of dietary fat-inducible Mest in white adipose tissue of C57BL/6J mice are not heritable
CONCLUSIONS: Disparity of HFD-induced Mest in mice is not heritable but, rather, is reestablished during each generation and remains fixed from an early age to adulthood. Short-term HFD feeding reveals variation of WAT Mest expression within isogenic mice that is positively associated with the development of obesity.PMID:38616328 | DOI:10.1002/oby.24020 (Source: Obesity)

Accelerometer-Based Estimates of Physical Activity and Sedentary Time Among Samoan Adults
CONCLUSIONS: This study characterizes physical activity among Samoan adults and highlights variation by sex, urbanicity, and weight status. In providing initial device-measured estimates of physical activity in Samoa, this analysis establishes a baseline from which the success of future attempts to intervene on physical activity may be assessed.PMID:38621669 | DOI:10.1123/jpah.2023-0590 (Source: Journal of Physical Activity and Health)

High Frequency of Diffuse Idiopathic Skeletal Hyperostosis in Patients With Obesity Hypoventilation Syndrome
J Rheumatol. 2024 Apr 15:jrheum.2024-0081. doi: 10.3899/jrheum.2024-0081. A randomized controlled trial to test the effects of displaying the Nutri-Score in food advertising on consumer perceptions and intentions to purchase and consume
CONCLUSIONS: This research is the first in the literature to demonstrate that displaying the Nutri-Score in advertising messages assists consumers in directing their choices towards healthier foods. Regulations mandating the display of the Nutri-Score in food advertising could be an effective public health measure.PMID:38622707 | DOI:10.1186/s12966-024-01588-5 (Source: Health Physics)

Cardiology: What You May Have Missed in 2023
Ann Intern Med. 2024 Apr 16. doi: 10.7326/M24-0581. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCardiology and all its subspecialties continue to push the envelope in developing new treatment strategies for a wide variety of diseases. After screening more than 1300 articles, we highlight a selection of important cardiology articles published in 2023. Starting with prevention, we note articles that look at the effect of semaglutide in patients with obesity as well as a first-in-class drug, bempedoic acid, on cardiovascular outcomes. We have also examined new evidence comparing conservative management with invasive management of frail, ol...
