The robotic future of minimally invasive cytoreduction and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy for peritoneal surface malignancies
Chin Clin Oncol. 2023 Mar 13:cco-22-118. doi: 10.21037/cco-22-118. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS/HIPEC) has been increasingly utilized for peritoneal surface malignancies. This has been commonly utilized for a variety of neoplasms, but, especially mucinous neoplasms of the appendix, ovarian cancer, gastric cancer, colorectal cancer and mesothelioma. Traditionally, CRS/HIPEC has been performed as an open, extensive operation associated with prolonged hospitalization. However, when the peritoneal carcinomatosis index (PCI) is small (<10), minimally ...

Molecular Histopathology for Establishing Diagnostic Method and Clinical Therapy for Ovarian Carcinoma
In this study, the molecular pathological classification of OC has been described based on the characteristics of the two types of OC, types 1 and 2. Compared with Europe and the United States, Japan has a higher prevalence of type 1 OC and a lower prevalence of type 2 OC. The prevalence of each type of OC varies by race. It has been elucidated that the prevalence rate of each type of ovarian cancer in Asian countries is similar to that in Japan. Thus, OC is a heterogeneous disease. Furthermore, OC has been attributed to molecular biological mechanisms that vary among tissue subtypes. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct ...

Association of Frequent Aspirin Use With Ovarian Cancer Risk According to Genetic Susceptibility
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: The findings of this study suggest that genetic susceptibility to ovarian cancer based on currently identified common genetic variants does not appear to modify the protective association between frequent aspirin use and ovarian cancer risk. Future work should continue to explore the role of aspirin use for ovarian cancer prevention among individuals who are at higher risk for ovarian cancer.PMID:36826816 | DOI:10.1001/jamanetworkopen.2023.0666 (Source: Cancer Control)

Cancers, Vol. 15, Pages 1453: Characterization of Primary Mucinous Ovarian Cancer by Diffusion-Weighted and Dynamic Contrast Enhancement MRI in Comparison with Serous Ovarian Cancer
Conclusions. DWI and DCE appear to be very good diagnostic tools in differentiating between serous carcinomas (LGSC, HGSC) and MOC. Significant differences in median ADC values between MOC and LGSC compared with those between MOC and HGSC indicate the usefulness of DWI in differentiating between less and more aggressive types of EOC, not only among the most common serous carcinomas. ROC curve analysis showed that ADC had excellent diagnostic accuracy in differentiating between MOC and HGSC. In contrast, TTP showed the greatest value for differentiating between LGSC and MOC. Stratifying the risk of ovarian cancer incidence by histologic subtypes in the Korean Epithelial Ovarian Cancer Study (Ko-EVE)
CONCLUSION: A heterogeneous association between some risk factors and the incidence of each subtype of epithelial OC was observed, suggesting that the carcinogenic mechanisms of each subtype may be partly different.PMID:36789760 | DOI:10.1002/cam4.5612 (Source: Cancer Control)

Identifying SOX17 as a Sensitive and Specific Marker for Ovarian and Endometrial Carcinomas
Mod Pathol. 2023 Jan;36(1):100038. doi: 10.1016/j.modpat.2022.100038.ABSTRACTSimilar to PAX8, SOX17 was recently identified as a master transcription factor of ovarian cancer based on RNA sequencing data. We explored SOX17 utility in diagnosing ovarian tumors and other gynecologic tumors. We systematically evaluated SOX17 expression on tissue microarrays of 398 ovarian tumors of various types, 93 endometrial carcinomas, 80 cervical carcinomas, and 1371 nongynecologic carcinomas, such as those of kidney, thyroid, breast, colon, bladder, liver, bile duct, adrenal gland, pancreas, brain, and lung and malignant melanoma. In ad...

Cancers, Vol. 15, Pages 1172: Update on Prognostic and Predictive Markers in Mucinous Ovarian Cancer
omenico Ferraioli This review includes state-of-the-art prognostic and predictive factors of mucinous ovarian cancer (MOC), a rare tumor. Clinical, pathological, and molecular features and treatment options according to prognosis are comprehensively discussed. Different clinical implications of MOC are described according to the The International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) stage: early MOC (stage I-II) and advanced MOC (stage III-IV). Early MOC is characterized by a good prognosis. Surgery is the mainstay of treatment. Fertility-sparing surgery could be performed in patients who wish to become pregn...

Primary squamous cell carcinoma of the ovary accompanied by transition of a mucinous borderline ovarian tumor
This report describes a woman with a rare primary squamous cell carcinoma of the ovary accompanied by transition of a mucinous borderline ovarian tumor. A woman in her late 40s was referred for abdominal discomfort, which worsened during defecation. Pelvic magnetic resonance imaging showed a multiloculated cystic lesion in the left adnexa measuring approximately 7.5 × 9.5 × 7.0 cm. An intraoperatively obtained frozen biopsy sample of the mass in the left ovary was positive for malignancy, resulting in a surgical staging operation. The tumor was composed of squamous cell carcinoma and mucinous borderline tumor. There was ...

Trefoil factor family proteins as potential diagnostic markers for mucinous invasive ovarian carcinoma
ConclusionTaken together, these findings suggest that the TFF proteins may play a pivotal role in tumor initiation and progression for the MC histotype. Moreover, these novel histotype-specific diagnostic biomarkers may not only improve patient stratification of early-stage ovarian carcinomas but may also be candidates for the development of molecular targeted therapies. Cancers, Vol. 15, Pages 730: Is Reflex Germline BRCA1/2 Testing Necessary in Women Diagnosed with Non-Mucinous High-Grade Epithelial Ovarian Cancer Aged 80 Years or Older?
C. Jayson D. Gareth R. Evans Women diagnosed with non-mucinous high-grade epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) in England are often reflex-tested for germline and tumour BRCA1/2 variants. The value of germline BRCA1/2 testing in women diagnosed aged ≥80 is questionable. We performed an observational study of all women diagnosed with non-mucinous high-grade EOC who underwent germline and tumour BRCA1/2 testing by the North West of England Genomic Laboratory Hub. A subgroup of women also underwent germline testing using a panel of homologous recombination repair (HRR) genes and/or tumour testing for homologous r...

Familial risk of epithelial ovarian cancer after accounting for gynaecological surgery: a population-based study
Conclusion Familial risk of epithelial ovarian cancer extends to TDRs, especially for high-grade serous and mucinous histotypes. Distant relatives share genes but minimal environment, highlighting the importance of germline inherited genetics in ovarian cancer aetiology. Increased ovarian cancer risk in distant relatives has implications for counselling and recommendations for prophylactic surgeries that, from our data, appear only to reach FDRs. Lifetime ovulatory years and risk of epithelial ovarian cancer: a multinational pooled analysis
CONCLUSIONS: LOY is positively associated with non-mucinous EOC. Differences between estimated and expected model coefficients for LOY components suggest factors beyond ovulation underlie the associations between LOY components and EOC in general and for non-HGSOC.PMID:36688720 | DOI:10.1093/jnci/djad011 (Source: Cancer Control)
