Clinical implications of histologic subtypes on survival outcomes in primary mucinous ovarian carcinoma
CONCLUSIONS: The IS of PMOC had poorer survival outcomes and a higher proportion of advanced-stage tumors. Although its independent prognostic significance remains uncertain, adjuvant chemotherapy should be considered for patients with fertility preservation in the IS group.PMID:37660413 | DOI:10.1016/j.ygyno.2023.08.013 (Source: Gynecologic Oncology)

The spectrum of MAPK-ERK pathway genomic alterations in gynecologic malignancies: Opportunities for novel therapeutic approaches
CONCLUSIONS: Approximately 1 in 5 patients with a gynecologic tumor harbor a MAPK/ERK pathway genomic alteration. Novel treatment strategies capitalizing on these alterations are warranted.PMID:37657193 | DOI:10.1016/j.ygyno.2023.08.007 (Source: Gynecologic Oncology)

[PERSPECTIVES] Rare Epithelial Ovarian Cancers: Low Grade Serous and Mucinous Carcinomas
The ovarian epithelial cancer histotypes can be divided into common and rare types. Common types include high-grade serous ovarian carcinomas and the endometriosis-associated cancers, endometrioid and clear-cell carcinomas. The less common histotypes are mucinous and low-grade serous, each comprising less than 10% of all epithelial carcinomas. Although histologically and epidemiologically distinct from each other, these histotypes share some genetic and natural history features that distinguish them from the more common types. In this review, we will consider the similarities and differences of these rare histological type...

Immunohistochemical expression of PRAME in 485 cases of epithelial tubo-ovarian tumors
We examined 485 cases of epithelial tubo-ovarian tumors including 107 clear cell carcinomas (CCC), 52 endometroid carcinomas (EC), 103 high grade serous carcinomas (HGSC), 119 low grade serous carcinomas (LGSC)/micropapillary variant of serous borderline tumors (mSBT), and 104 cases of mucinous carcinomas (MC)/mucinous borderline tumors (MBT). The immunohistochemical analysis was performed using TMAs.The highest levels of expression were seen in EC (60%), HGSC (62%), and CCC (56%), while expression in LGSC/mSBT (4%) and MC/MBT (2%) was rare. The clinico-pathologic correlations and survival analysis showed no prognostic sig...

Molecular Status of < em > BRAF < /em > Mutation in Epithelial Ovarian Cancer: An Analysis of 57 Cases in the Northeast of Iran
CONCLUSION: The BRAF mutation is most frequent in borderline tumors but not in invasive serous carcinomas. It seems that 2 different pathways exist for the development of ovarian epithelial neoplasms: one for borderline tumors and the other for high-grade invasive carcinomas. Our study supports this hypothesis. The BRAF mutation is rare in mucinous neoplasms.PMID:37600581 | PMC:PMC10439751 | DOI:10.30699/IJP.2023.554750.2907 (Source: Cancer Control)

Association between antihypertensive medicine use and risk of ovarian cancer in women aged 50 years and older
CONCLUSION: Our results provide little support for a chemo-preventive role for most antihypertensives, however, the histotype-specific associations we found warrant further investigation.PMID:37595337 | DOI:10.1016/j.canep.2023.102444 (Source: Cancer Control)

Mucinous Adenocarcinoma and Carcinoid Tumor Arising Within an Ovarian Mature Cystic Teratoma: A Case Report
We report a case of an 18-year-old Omani woman with a left ovarian cyst. After laparotomy with left salpingo-oophorectomy, omentectomy, and peritoneal washings, the excised cyst had the typical morphology of mature cystic teratoma with grade I mucinous adenocarcinoma and a focus of carcinoid tumor.PMID:37587986 | PMC:PMC10425607 | DOI:10.5001/omj.2023.40 (Source: Oman Medical Journal)

Differences in the position of endometriosis-associated and non-associated ovarian cancer relative to the uterus
ConclusionHGSCs are often not attached to the uterus, and EAOCs are positioned more posteriorly to the uterus than non-EAOCs.Critical relevance statementHigh-grade serous carcinomas were often not attached to the uterus, and endometriosis-associated ovarian cancers were positioned more posteriorly to the uterus than non-endometriosis-associated ovarian cancers.Key points• The position of the ovarian tumor can be determined using MRI.• High-grade serous carcinomas had less attachment to the uterus.• Endometriosis-associated cancers were positioned more posteriorly to the uterus.• The location of ovarian tumors i...

Synchronous occurrence of hepatic mucinous cystic neoplasm and serous ovarian cystadenoma
We report a rare association of mucinous cystic neoplasm with ovarian serous cystadenoma in a young female patient. The diagnosis was confirmed by histopathological examination of the surgical specimen. Key clinical messageThe coexistence of hepatic mucinous cystic neoplasm and ovarian serous cystadenoma is rare and can only be confirmed by histological examination of the surgical specimen. Complete surgical resection is the optimal treatment.AbstractMucinous cystic neoplasms (MCN) of the liver are rare premalignant lesions that account for less than 5% of all hepatic cysts. The synchronous occurrence of hepatic MCN with o...

Mucinous cystadenocarcinoma of the ovary in a 14-year-old girl: a case report and literature review
Ovarian epithelial tumors are common in adults, and their peak incidence of onset is over 40 years of age. In children, most ovarian tumors are germ cell-derived, whereas epithelial tumors are rare and mostly ... (Source: BMC Women's Health)

GSE236502 Intraperitoneal paclitaxel is a safe and effective therapeutic strategy for treating mucinous appendiceal adenocarcinoma
Contributors : John P Shen ; Ichiaki Ito ; Saikat ChowdhurySeries Type : Expression profiling by high throughput sequencingOrganism : Homo sapiensAppendiceal adenocarcinomas (AAs) are a rare and heterogeneous mix of tumors for which few preclinical models exist. The rarity of AA has made performing prospective clinical trials difficult, which has partly contributed to AA remaining an orphan disease with no chemotherapeutic agents approved by the FDA for its treatment. AA has a unique biology in which it frequently forms diffuse peritoneal metastases but almost never spreads via a hematogenous route and rarely spreads to ...

A mural nodule of anaplastic carcinoma with sarcomatoid differentiation in a background of ovarian borderline mucinous cystadenoma
Ecancermedicalscience. 2023 Jun 5;17:1557. doi: 10.3332/ecancer.2023.1557. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTOvarian mucinous cystic tumours with mural nodules are rare tumours of the ovary that are often missed out during diagnosis. They are classified under the ovarian mucinous surface epithelial-stromal tumours. These mural nodules can be sarcoma-like (benign), anaplastic carcinoma, sarcomas, or mixed malignant (carcinosarcoma). However, very few cases of anaplastic malignant mural nodules have been reported. Here, we present a case of a borderline ovarian mucinous cystadenoma with anaplastic mural nodule that has sarcomatoid di...
