Efficacy of fat quantification methods used in MRI to distinguish between normal, benign, and malignant bone marrow pathologies in children
CONCLUSION: T1-SIV, OP/IP SR, and FF may potentially distinguish normal from pathological bone marrow. OP/IP SR and FF values detected malignant infiltration with high sensitivity and specificity in this study. However, only OP/IP SR may significantly differentiate benign and malignant bone marrow pathologies which needs to be confirmed in the future study with a larger patient population.PMID:38659300 | DOI:10.1177/02841851241247110 (Source: Acta Radiologica)

Resting state MRI reveals spontaneous physiological fluctuations in the kidney and tracks diabetic nephropathy in rats
Am J Physiol Renal Physiol. 2024 Apr 25. doi: 10.1152/ajprenal.00423.2023. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe kidneys maintain fluid-electrolyte balance and excrete waste in the presence of constant fluctuations in plasma volume and systemic blood pressure. The kidneys perform these functions to control capillary perfusion and glomerular filtration by modulating the mechanisms of autoregulation. An effect of these modulations are spontaneous, natural fluctuations in nephron perfusion. Numerous other mechanisms can lead to fluctuations in perfusion and flow. The ability to monitor these spontaneous physiological fluctuations...

Circulation. 2024 Apr 25. doi: 10.1161/CIR.0000000000001232. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTricuspid valve disease is an often underrecognized clinical problem that is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Unfortunately, patients will often present late in their disease course with severe right-sided heart failure, pulmonary hypertension, and life-limiting symptoms that have few durable treatment options. Traditionally, the only treatment for tricuspid valve disease has been medical therapy or surgery; however, there have been increasing interest and success with the use of transcatheter tricuspid valve ther...

Ganglionic Local Opioid Analgesia at the Superior Cervical Ganglion: MRI-Verified Solution Spread
ConclusionFor the transoral blocking technique, a strict laterodorsal needle direction is recommended to prevent possible block failures. A total volume of 2  ml injected into the parapharyngeal space and its “medial compartment” is recommended. Higher volumes may lead to uncontrolled distribution patterns.Trial registrationClinicaltrials.gov identifier NCT05257655; date of registration 2022-02-25; patient enrollment date from 2023-01-09 to 2023-08-31. Idiopathic intracranial hypertension associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection in an adult male patient: a case report and review of the literature
ConclusionIdiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) may occur in association with SARS-CoV-2 infection and should be considered when making a differential diagnosis for headache and blurring of vision. COVID-19 may play a role in the development of intracranial hypertension, even in the absence of known risk factors. Early diagnosis and treatment of IIH has paramount importance to prevent vision loss and other morbidities. (Source: Journal of Medical Case Reports)

Impact of ischemic stroke topography on early clinical outcome of basilar artery occlusion: a retrospective study
ConclusionUnfavorable early outcomes in patients with BAOS may be explained by a higher likelihood of inferior brain stem infarcts and lower rates of reperfusion success.Clinical relevance statementBasilar artery occlusion due to underlying stenosis is associated with a poorer prognosis than that caused by embolism; these results suggest that aggressive endovascular therapy, usually involving the placement of a permanent stent, may be warranted in these patients.Key PointsInferior brain stem and occipital infarcts are prognostically unfavorable in basilar artery occlusion.Basilar artery occlusion due to stenosis occurs mor...

Toward an optimal cadaveric brain model for neurosurgical education: assessment of preservation, parenchyma, vascular injection, and imaging
ConclusionFor better-quality specimens for neurosurgical education and training, formalin preservation within ≤72 h of death was preferable, as was injection with colored latex. Formalin-flushed specimens more closely resembled live brain parenchyma. Assessment scores were lower for preparation techniques performed >  72 h postmortem and for nonformalin preservation solutions. The positive correlation between cadaver assessment scores and our novel MRI score indicates that donation organizations and institutional buyers should incorporate MRI as a screening tool for the selection of high-quality specimens. Cases: Decompensated Heart Failure Secondary to Hypopituitarism in an Elderly Patient
Intern Med. 2024 Apr 23. doi: 10.2169/internalmedicine.3491-24. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHypopituitarism is difficult to diagnose because of its non-specific symptoms, especially in the presence of comorbidities. A 77-year-old woman with worsening anorexia and exertional dyspnea was initially diagnosed with decompensated dry cold-type heart failure. Hormonal laboratory tests indicated secondary hypothyroidism as a part of the evaluation of heart failure. Furthermore, pituitary magnetic resonance imaging revealed thickening of the pituitary stalk and a loss of signal intensity in the posterior pituitary, thus suggestin...

Brain functional connectivity alterations in patients with anterior cruciate ligament injury
Brain Res. 2024 Apr 22:148956. doi: 10.1016/j.brainres.2024.148956. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRecent advancements in neuroimaging have illustrated that anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries could impact the central nervous system (CNS), causing neuroplastic changes in the brain beyond the traditionally understood biomechanical consequences. While most of previous functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies have focused on localized cortical activity changes post-injury, emerging research has suggested disruptions in functional connectivity across the brain. However, these prior investigations, albeit pione...
