IJERPH, Vol. 19, Pages 15840: Uptake and Transport of Different Concentrations of PPCPs by Vegetables
In this study, we compared the uptake, transport, and accumulation of 27 PPCPs in three types of sprouts (radish, buckwheat, and okra). The bioaccumulation of amantadine, diphenhydramine, chlorpheniramine maleate, sibutramine, hemosibutramine, chlorosibutramine, N-monomethyl sibutramine, N, N-desmethyl sibutramine, and carbamazepine was found to be significantly higher in plants grown for 12 days in media containing 0.5, 5.0, and 50.0 ng/mL PPCPs. With increasing concentration of PPCPs in the culture solution, the amount of PPCPs absorbed by plants and the degree of accumulation also showed an increasing trend. At the same ...

A transcriptomic atlas of drug-induced endothelial dysfunction in human endothelial cells
Drug-induced vascular burden is a critical challenge in both pharmaceutical development and clinical setting. In the past two decades, multiple drugs have been withdrawn from the market due to unanticipated adverse vascular complications, such as the increased risk of myocardial infarction and stroke (e.g., sibutramine and valdecoxib), heart valvular disease (e.g., pergolide and dexfenfluramine), and haemorrhagic stroke (e.g., phenylpropanolamine). Furthermore, many cancer drugs, such as anthracyclines, tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), and proteasome inhibitors, are also well-known to elicit a broad spectrum of vascular ...

Pharmacological Management of Obesity: A Century of Expert Opinions in Cecil Textbook of Medicine
Conclusions: The pharmacological management of obesity has remained frustratingly inefficient. The reasons for the relative lack of success may reside in the ever-growing access to dense, palatable, and relatively inexpensive food, coupled with the decrease in energy expenditure created by a sedentary lifestyle. Serotonin in the regulation of systemic energy metabolism
ABSTRACTSerotonin is a well-known neurotransmitter that is synthesized from the amino acid, tryptophan. To date, more than 14 different serotonin receptors have been discovered; they exist universally in our body and enable diverse biological functions in different organs. Central serotonin regulates mood and behavior, and impacts the systemic energy balance by decreasing appetite. A number of drugs that modulate central serotonin function (e.g., fenfluramine, sibutramine, and lorcaserin) were approved and used as anti-obesity drugs, but then later withdrawn due to adverse cardiovascular and carcinogenic effects. Over the ...

Dietary Supplements as Source of Unintentional Doping
CONCLUSION: More than 28% of the analyzed dietary supplements pose a potential risk of unintentional doping. Athletes and their teams need to be aware of the issues associated with the use of DS. They should take great care before inclusion of DS in the supplementation regime.PMID:35496041 | PMC:PMC9054437 | DOI:10.1155/2022/8387271 (Source: Biomed Res)

Continued Risk of Dietary Supplements Adulterated with Approved and Unapproved Drugs: Assessment of the FDA Tainted Supplements Database 2007 through 2021
This article compares the determination of API adulteration in dietary supplement from the 10-year time-period of 2007-2016 to the most recent 5-year period of 2017-2021. From 2007 through 2021, 1,068 unique products have been found to be adulterated with APIs. Sexual enhancement and weight loss dietary supplements are the most common products adulterated with APIs. Phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors are commonly included in sexual enhancement dietary supplements and a single product can include up to five APIs. Sibutramine, a drug removed from the market due to cardiovascular adverse events, is the most included adulterant AP...
