Prevalence and incidence of sexually transmitted infections among South African women initiating injectable and long-acting contraceptives
ConclusionsAlthough the study participants received extensive counselling on the importance of condom use, this study highlights the high prevalence and incidence of STIs in South African women, especially amongst young women, emphasising the need for better STI screening and management strategies. Original delayed-start ovarian stimulation protocol with a gonadotropin-releasing hormone antagonist, medroxyprogesterone acetate, and high-dose gonadotropin for poor responders and patients with poor-quality embryos
ConclusionThis original protocol increased the number of MII oocytes retrieved, 2PN zygotes, good blastocysts, and live birth rates in both poor responders and in patients with poor-quality embryos. (Source: Frontiers in Endocrinology)

METTL3-regulated m6A modification impairs the decidualization of endometrial stromal cells by regulating YTHDF2-mediated degradation of FOXO1 mRNA in endometriosis-related infertility
CONCLUSIONS: METTL3-regulated m6A promotes YTHDF2-mediated decay of FOXO1 mRNA, thereby affecting cellular decidualization and embryo implantation. These findings provide novel insights into the development of therapies for women with endometriosis-related infertility.PMID:37891533 | DOI:10.1186/s12958-023-01151-0 (Source: Reproductive Biology)

Ferroportin expression and regulation in human placenta/fetal membranes: Implications for ferroptosis and adverse pregnancy outcomes
Reprod Biol. 2023 Oct 25;23(4):100816. doi: 10.1016/j.repbio.2023.100816. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIron overload is associated with pregnancy complications. Ferroportin (FPN) is the only known iron exporter in mammalian cells. We hypothesize that FPN is functionally important in ferrotopsis, a process of iron-dependent non-apoptotic programmed cell death, and may have a critical role to play in pregnancy success. We investigated the expression of FPN in placenta/fetal membranes by immunohistochemistry in tissues collected from pregnancies with/without preeclampsia (PE) and spontaneous preterm birth (SPTB). FPN was hig...

'Tis but a scratch: a critical review of the Women's Health Initiative evidence associating menopausal hormone therapy with the risk of breast cancer
This article closely examines evidence that calls even this claim of breast cancer risk into serious question, including the WHI's reporting of nonsignificant results as if they were meaningful, a misinterpretation of its own data, and the misleading assertion that the WHI's findings have reduced the incidence of breast cancer in the United States. A generation of women has been deprived of HT largely as a result of this widely publicized misinterpretation of the data. This article attempts to rectify this misunderstanding, with the goal of helping patients and physicians make informed joint decisions about the use of HT.P...

Tiktok and depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (dmpa): a review of social media content and quality
Individuals increasingly turn to social media for help with contraceptive decisions. We sought to characterize the tone, accuracy, subject matter, and educational value of TikTok videos mentioning the depot medroxyprogesterone acetate intramuscular injection (DMPA). (Source: Contraception)

“it would put it in their own hands”: healthcare providers’ perspectives towards patient self-administration of subcutaneous medroxyprogesterone acetate (dmpa-sc)
Subcutaneous self-injection of medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA-SC) is widely accepted in many international settings around the world, but this method of administration is not yet approved in the US. Self-injection has the potential to reduce access barriers, increase rates of contraception continuation and increase autonomy of contraceptive users. Healthcare providers are the gatekeepers of patients' health, their biases, views and perspectives have potential to influence the extent and speed with which novel medical interventions diffuse within populations. Concurrent administration of depot medroxyprogesterone acetate with mifepristone may decrease medication abortion efficacy: a retrospective cohort study
A 2016 randomized controlled trial of medication abortion patients suggested an increased rate of ongoing pregnancy among those receiving a depot medroxyprogesterone (DMPA) injection concurrently with mifepristone compared to after their abortion. We assessed the ongoing pregnancy rate for medication abortion patients who received DMPA on the same day as mifepristone compared with those who did not in a real-world setting. Can the administration of progesterone to inhibit the lh-surge be started on the fifth day of ovarian stimulation? a randomized controlled trial in oocyte donors
Numerous studies support progestin primed ovarian stimulation (PPOS) to inhibit the LH-surge in IVF treatments with freeze-all. The standard protocol introduces Medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) in day1 of ovarian stimulation (OS), while little is known about its delayed administration to improve patient ’s compliance and comfort. This RCT compares PPOS protocols with MPA started in day1 versus day5 to assess putative quantitative and qualitative differences in the gametes. (Source: Fertility and Sterility)

Prognosis of patients with endometrial cancer or atypical endometrial hyperplasia after complete remission with fertility-sparing therapy
ConclusionsWe identified several clinical features of patients with EC and AEH after CR. Given the high probability of endometrial abnormalities detected postoperatively, hysterectomy may be considered for patients who no longer want children. (Source: Archives of Gynecology and Obstetrics)

Systems analysis reveals differential expression of endocervical genes in African women randomized to DMPA-IM, LNG implant or cu-IUD
Clin Immunol. 2023 Sep 1:109750. doi: 10.1016/j.clim.2023.109750. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAlthough effective contraceptives are crucial for preventing unintended pregnancies, evidence suggests that their use may perturb the female genital tract (FGT). A comparative analysis of the effects of the most common contraceptives on the FGT have not been evaluated in a randomized clinical trial setting. Here, we evaluated the effect of three long-acting contraceptive methods: depot medroxyprogesterone acetate(DMPA-IM), levonorgestrel(LNG) implant, and a copper intrauterine device (Cu-IUD), on the endocervical host transcript...

Efficacy and prognosis of adjuvant treatment of endometrial cancer with medroxyprogesterone acetate COX regression analysis
CONCLUSION: Age, pathological type, molecular typing, and myometrial infiltration were all relevant factors affecting the prognosis of early-stage high-risk endometrial cancer. The potential long-term prognostic benefit of adjuvant postoperative radiotherapy in patients with early-stage high-risk endometrial cancer is worthy of clinical consideration.PMID:37637703 | PMC:PMC10450383 | DOI:10.12998/wjcc.v11.i23.5447 (Source: Cancer Control)
